Pillars of EU energy policy
Answer : The European Commission first proposed the so-called “three pillars” of European Union
energy policy – sustainability, competitiveness and security of supply – as “core principles” for “a
new comprehensive European energy policy” in a 2006 Green Paper. A follow-up communication,
“An Energy Policy for Europe,” established the three pillars as a mantra for a new EU energy policy
that is “ambitious, competitive and long-term,” stating that collaborating to achieve the three pillars
in the EU would be a “return to its roots.”

What are the challenges before rural energy planning in India? How should these be
faced?
Answer : Developing and extending modern energy supplies, including renewable energy, to 6 billion
people in the coming decades, while simultaneously introducing ways to produce and use biofuels
more sustainably during the transition, is a daunting task. Within the area of development and the
environment, this task is perhaps the main challenge facing the energy industry. All the types of
investment discussed above are capable of generating satisfactory rates of return and, with
satisfactory pricing policies for “commercial” energy, can be designed to be financially viable.

Answer : "Installed capacity of 10MW" means that the instantaneous output can be at a level of
10MW continuously. That's the power rating of the facility - power is the instantaneous output.
Energy is power integrated over time. So a 10MW plant that operates for 24 hours at 10MW
produces 10X24 - 240 MWHr of energy.
