Introduction
This unit of study will
help you learn the
following important
common core
curriculum standards.
Press Pause to stop for discussion
2
Common Core Writing Standard
Write
informative/explanatory
texts to examine a
topic and convey ideas
and information clearly.
Text Types and
Purposes
Write arguments to
support claims in an
analysis of substantive
topics or texts using
valid reasoning and
relevant and sufficient
evidence
Speaking and Listening
Engage effectively in a
range of collaborative
discussions with diverse
partners on topics and
texts, building on others’
ideas and expressing their
own clearly.
Production and Distribution
of Writing
• Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning,
revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
• Use technology, including the internet, to produce and
publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate
with others.
Research
• Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a
question or solve a problem; synthesize multiple sources on the
subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under
investigation
• Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources,
using advanced searches effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy
of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism
Take Notes
As we proceed through this
unit of study, you will need
to take careful notes. The
information you gather will
be useful in completing
research projects.
8
Pre Unit Warm Up Activity
Divide into small groups and discuss
the following energy issue.
See next slide
9
Small Group
Discussion Topic
Make a list of the various ways that people could reduce
the amount of energy they use.
Assume that gas prices reached $15 a gallon(more than
triple the current price). What kind of changes might
drivers consider?
What kind of alternative energy sources could be used to
power autos? What transportation alternatives might be
used?
10
Report Back to the Class
Take notes as we share
each group’s ideas about
reducing energy
consumption.
11
Class Discussion
•How can we conserve our use of energy?
•What can home owners do to conserve
energy?
•What can businesses do to conserve
energy?
12
Part One
View, Read, and Think
14
The most common
forms of energy that
are used to sustain
life and power
human activities
originate with
radiation and heat
from the sun.
15
Solar energy from the sun can be captured
and stored for future use.
16
17
Without the sun, plants cannot get the energy to grow.
Without plants, animals could not survive.
Which types of animals need to eat plants to survive?
18
19
Although the sun’s energy is
necessary for sustaining life, there
are several other sources of energy.
20
• Chemical Energy- Burning Coal
• Heat Energy- Moving Particles (hot rock)
• Mechanical Energy- Moving objects (wind,
falling rock)
• Nuclear Energy- Splitting Atoms
• Radiant Energy- Light Energy (Sun)
21
During the last 200 years, the Industrial Revolution has created
a need to power factories, machines, trucks and automobiles.
Traditionally, the energy used has been fossil fuels.
Class Discussion
•What are fossils?
•What are fossil
fuels?
•Why are they not
renewable?
22
23
24
As countries and populations have expanded, there has been a tremendous
need for coal and oil to power additional factories and automobiles.
More and more oil has been needed to keep the modern world running.
Will we ever run out of gas?
Our current sources of energy
come from renewable and non-
renewable sources.
25
Class Discussion
•What is gasoline made from?
•What is petroleum?
•Where does our oil come from?
26
•Most experts agree that the United States needs to find
ways to reduce dependence on oil. Since 40% of our oil
comes from other countries, it is becoming increasingly risky
to rely on foreign sources to operate our factories and
automobiles. Losing access to 10-20% of our oil supply
would inflict serious damage on the American businesses
and families.
We must find ways to reduce our
dependence on oil.
28
29
Non-renewable forms of energy
like oil will not last forever.
Supplies will become smaller and
prices will continue to soar.
How much does a gallon of gas cost this
week?
Continuing to extract large amounts of petroleum
from the earth is costly and presents issues for the
environment.
30
Class Discussion
What can we do to make sure we
have enough energy for future
generations?
31
Why do these last forever?
32
What are these? Where would be the
best location for these?
33
Where do these work best?
34
Some buildings and homes are now being equipped
with solar energy generating panels that provide much
of the energy needed by businesses and residents.
35
There are many renewable sources of energy that
can reduce our dependence on oil and reduce
damage to our environment. If we use technology
efficiently, we can provide everyone on the planet
with clean air to breathe and safe water to drink.
36
37
Class Discussion
Why do you think renewable
forms of energy are better?
38
How much renewable energy
do we use? Take a look.
39
Discuss these types of energy.
Describe how each one functions.
40
41
