   Ending tutoring sessions
   Checking for understanding (review)

Ending Tutoring Session
   Have students summarize the material you have
    discussed. "Can you explain the concept to me?"
   Ask students if there is any information they still don't
    understand. "What questions do you still have about...?"
       DON'T ask..."Does this make sense?"
Ending Tutoring Session cont.
   End with encouraging words
       You did really great today!
       I can tell you are trying really hard to understand this concept.
   Plug OLA tutoring room.
       Please come back if you have more questions. We are open
        Monday through Friday, 9am to 10pm
   Ask students to tell a friend about OLA.
       Please tell a friend about our tutoring room.
       Like us on Facebook!
Check for Understanding (Review)
   To check for understanding have the student re-explain
    the procedure to you.
   Avoid asking questions like, "Does that make sense to
    you?" and "Do you understand now?"
   Try instead to use questions like “Why do you think this
    procedure works?”
    More examples:
       How does ___ relate to ___?
       What details can you add to ___?
       Give me an example of ___?
       What might you conclude from ___?
Transitioning Tutors (Review)
When transitioning a student from one tutor to another,
 please provide the following information to the new tutor:
Whether the student has a headset or speakers and
 can/can't hear audio.
Whether the student is still working on the problem or is
 done.
Whether the student's information is logged in database. If
 not, provide the information for the new tutor.

e.g. “@suzanne – jonah can hear, just starting new
 problem, info in db”
Reminders
   Close at 10pm consistently.
       Sorry, but we're closing in 2 minutes - you're always welcome to
        come back tomorrow.
   Tutor communication ratio should be roughly 95% mic,
    5% chat, you should NEVER have to be reminded to
    use your mic.
   Please remember to always be personable. It's not
    enough to just help students get the right answer, we
    want them to feel good about it and value the
    opportunity to come back!

Ending tutoring sessions

  • 3. Ending Tutoring Session  Have students summarize the material you have discussed. "Can you explain the concept to me?"  Ask students if there is any information they still don't understand. "What questions do you still have about...?"  DON'T ask..."Does this make sense?"
  • 4. Ending Tutoring Session cont.  End with encouraging words  You did really great today!  I can tell you are trying really hard to understand this concept.  Plug OLA tutoring room.  Please come back if you have more questions. We are open Monday through Friday, 9am to 10pm  Ask students to tell a friend about OLA.  Please tell a friend about our tutoring room.  Like us on Facebook!
  • 5. Check for Understanding (Review)  To check for understanding have the student re-explain the procedure to you.  Avoid asking questions like, "Does that make sense to you?" and "Do you understand now?"  Try instead to use questions like “Why do you think this procedure works?” More examples:  How does ___ relate to ___?  What details can you add to ___?  Give me an example of ___?  What might you conclude from ___?
  • 6. Transitioning Tutors (Review) When transitioning a student from one tutor to another, please provide the following information to the new tutor: Whether the student has a headset or speakers and can/can't hear audio. Whether the student is still working on the problem or is done. Whether the student's information is logged in database. If not, provide the information for the new tutor. e.g. “@suzanne – jonah can hear, just starting new problem, info in db”
  • 7. Reminders  Close at 10pm consistently.  Sorry, but we're closing in 2 minutes - you're always welcome to come back tomorrow.  Tutor communication ratio should be roughly 95% mic, 5% chat, you should NEVER have to be reminded to use your mic.  Please remember to always be personable. It's not enough to just help students get the right answer, we want them to feel good about it and value the opportunity to come back!
