Greeting Students
1. Greet all students in chat box promptly and politely.
     Don’t wait to see if someone else greets the student. Be
      proactive!
1. Keep it friendly and professional.
     Hi “name of student”
     Welcome “name of student”
     Aloha “name of student”
1. Wait for student to reply back.
     This is so that you know they are                          at
      the computer and paying attention
      to the chat.
Greeting Students
4. Ask the student how you can help them in either math
   or science.
    How can we help you today? Math or science?
    Do you need help in math or science?
    If several students are entering the tutoring room at the same
     time, make sure you are clear about who you are talking to.
     Ex. @Kelli - Can we help you with math or science today?
Moving Students to Private Rooms
1. Let the student know you will be moving them to a
   private tutoring room to help them with their questions.
      It is important for first-time users to know what you are doing.
      Please wait a minute while I transfer you to a private tutoring
       room to answer your questions.
      I will transfer you to a private tutoring room to work on your
       questions with you. Hold on a minute. Ok. I am going to transfer
       you to a private tutoring room so I can help you with your
       questions.

      DON’T EVER JUST LEAVE A STUDENT IN A ROOM WITH
           NO INSTRUCTIONS OR COMMUNICATION.

         If you need to leave and come back, let them know
                      that you will be right back.
Moving Students to Private Rooms
2. Create a private tutoring room using the following
   steps.
  a.        Tools
  b.        Breakout Rooms
  c.        Select “Create Breakout Rooms”
  d.        Under “Name of rooms” type the student’s first name and
            subject
       i.     When we are busy, it might be helpful to write in parentheses the
              topic or subject the student is working on. Ex. Sam (chemistry) or
              Kiana (calc)
  e.        Under “Number of rooms” type 1
  f.        Click on “Do not move participants”
  g.        Click Create
Checking Audio
1. Check with the student to see if their audio is working.
  a. Let’s check to see if your audio is working. I am going to use
     my mic. Please let me know if you can hear me.
  b. Do you have speakers and a mic? Let’s check to see if you can
     hear me when I use my mic.
  c. Do you have speakers and a mic? Can you hear me when I talk
     in the mic?

*If the student has problems
hearing you, direct them to
use the “audio setup” wizard
under Tools, Audio. If their
audio doesn’t work, just
proceed using the tools
available to them (i.e., chat
and whiteboard).
Blackboard Collaborate Tools
1. Ask the student if they have been in the tutoring room
   before. If not, please review how to use the different
   Bb tools to use when asking their questions (i.e., chat
   box, toolbar, audio and whiteboard).
  a. Make sure to ask students if they understand how to use the
     tools before proceeding with anything else.
  b. Use the OLA Bb Tools slide (next) while going over the tools,
     so that students have a visual, too. This slide should be pre-
     loaded into the tutoring room.

Collecting and Recording Data
1. Ask the student for their information. This is extremely
   important!!
  a. Can I get some information from you? What is your first and
     last name, school, grade, class and teacher’s name? We use
     this information for our records only.
  b. Can you provide some information for me please? What is your
     first and last name, school, grade, class and teacher’s name?
     We use this information for our records only.
  c. I need to get some information from you for our records. What
     is your first and last name, school, grade, class and teacher’s
     name?
2. Record in OLA database. Proceed with tutoring.
Session Set-up Checklist
 Greet all students in the chat box promptly and politely.
 Wait for student to reply back.

 Check with the student to see if their audio is working.
 Ask the student if they have been in the tutoring room
  before.
 Collect and record student data in the OLA database.
 Proceed with tutoring.

Tutoring session set up

  • 3. Greeting Students 1. Greet all students in chat box promptly and politely.  Don’t wait to see if someone else greets the student. Be proactive! 1. Keep it friendly and professional.  Hi “name of student”  Welcome “name of student”  Aloha “name of student” 1. Wait for student to reply back.  This is so that you know they are at the computer and paying attention to the chat.
  • 4. Greeting Students 4. Ask the student how you can help them in either math or science.  How can we help you today? Math or science?  Do you need help in math or science?  If several students are entering the tutoring room at the same time, make sure you are clear about who you are talking to. Ex. @Kelli - Can we help you with math or science today?
  • 5. Moving Students to Private Rooms 1. Let the student know you will be moving them to a private tutoring room to help them with their questions.  It is important for first-time users to know what you are doing.  Please wait a minute while I transfer you to a private tutoring room to answer your questions.  I will transfer you to a private tutoring room to work on your questions with you. Hold on a minute. Ok. I am going to transfer you to a private tutoring room so I can help you with your questions. DON’T EVER JUST LEAVE A STUDENT IN A ROOM WITH NO INSTRUCTIONS OR COMMUNICATION. If you need to leave and come back, let them know that you will be right back.
  • 6. Moving Students to Private Rooms 2. Create a private tutoring room using the following steps. a. Tools b. Breakout Rooms c. Select “Create Breakout Rooms” d. Under “Name of rooms” type the student’s first name and subject i. When we are busy, it might be helpful to write in parentheses the topic or subject the student is working on. Ex. Sam (chemistry) or Kiana (calc) e. Under “Number of rooms” type 1 f. Click on “Do not move participants” g. Click Create
  • 7. Checking Audio 1. Check with the student to see if their audio is working. a. Let’s check to see if your audio is working. I am going to use my mic. Please let me know if you can hear me. b. Do you have speakers and a mic? Let’s check to see if you can hear me when I use my mic. c. Do you have speakers and a mic? Can you hear me when I talk in the mic?
  • 8. Checking Audio *If the student has problems hearing you, direct them to use the “audio setup” wizard under Tools, Audio. If their audio doesn’t work, just proceed using the tools available to them (i.e., chat and whiteboard).
  • 9. Blackboard Collaborate Tools 1. Ask the student if they have been in the tutoring room before. If not, please review how to use the different Bb tools to use when asking their questions (i.e., chat box, toolbar, audio and whiteboard). a. Make sure to ask students if they understand how to use the tools before proceeding with anything else. b. Use the OLA Bb Tools slide (next) while going over the tools, so that students have a visual, too. This slide should be pre- loaded into the tutoring room.
  • 11. Collecting and Recording Data 1. Ask the student for their information. This is extremely important!! a. Can I get some information from you? What is your first and last name, school, grade, class and teacher’s name? We use this information for our records only. b. Can you provide some information for me please? What is your first and last name, school, grade, class and teacher’s name? We use this information for our records only. c. I need to get some information from you for our records. What is your first and last name, school, grade, class and teacher’s name? 2. Record in OLA database. Proceed with tutoring.
  • 12.
