This document presents a student project to design a better livable town called "Lerofeel Town". It investigates the infrastructure and planning of ancient, present and future towns to incorporate beneficial elements. For the ancient town of Harappa, it highlights the drainage system and grid-based town planning. For the present city of Hong Kong, it examines the public transportation, solar energy and urban planning. The future city of Hainan, China focuses on renewable energy, green transportation and low-rise buildings. Bringing these elements together, the goal is to create a sustainable, low-carbon town that promotes lifestyle, relaxation, freshness and love.

In this project, I have to be the mayor of the “X” Town.
The people in “X” town require a more livable town.
To investigate a past, present and future town. The
future town is focus on the needs of people, facilities,
infrastructures, and how it sustain itself in future. To plan
the future refer to the past and learn from history to
achieve a better future town.
The area of the town is between 20 – 40 km². The
population is between 80,000 – 120,000. Our group are
doing a town located on land next to a sea.

Ancient Town – Harappa
CHAU XET NEE │0320222 │MISS IFFA │FNBE AUGUST 2014 │TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY
7
Overview
Harappa was a city in the Indus civilization that flourished around
2600 to 1700 BCE.Harappa is an archaeological site in Punjab,
eastern Pakistan. The site contains the ruins of the Bronze Age
fortified town, which is part of the Cemetery H culture and theIndus
Valley Civilization, centered in Sindh and the Punjab.Per
archaeological convention of naming a previously unknown civilization
by its first excavated site, the Indus Valley Civilization is also called
the Harappan Civilization.
3.1 History background
The Indus Valley Civilization has its earliest roots in cultures such as
that of Mehrgarh, approximately 6000 BCE. The two greatest
cities, Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, emerged circa 2600 BCE along

the Indus Rivervalley in Punjab and Sindh. The civilization, with
a writing system, urban centers, and diversified social and economic
system, was rediscovered in the 1920s after excavations at Mohenjo-daro
in Sindh near Larkana, and Harappa, in west Punjab south
ofLahore. A number of other sites stretching from
the Himalayan foothills in east Punjab, India in the north, to Gujarat in
the south and east, and to Balochistan in the west have also been
discovered and studied. Although the archaeological site at Harappa
was damaged in 1857when engineers constructing the Lahore-
Multan railroad, used brick from the Harappa ruins for track ballast, an
abundance of artifacts has nevertheless been found. The bricks
discovered were made of red sand, clay, stones and were baked at
very high temperature.
3.2 What makes a significant town?
- An underground drainage system
The main sewer, 1.5 meters deep and 91 cm
across, connected to many north-south and
east-west sewers. It was made from bricks
smoothened and joined together seamlessly.
The expert masonry kept the sewer watertight.
Drops at regular intervals acted like an
automatic cleaning device.
A wooden screen at the end of the drains held
back solid wastes. Liquids entered a cess poll
made of radial bricks. Tunnels carried the
waste liquids to the main channel connecting
the dockyard with the river estuary. Commoner
houses had baths and drains that emptied into
underground soakage jars.

- Town planning
The roads, dwelling houses, large buildings and forts were
very well executed. The houses were even protected from
sounds, odours, and thieves. The streets were formed in grid
system. Similar sized bricks were used for construction of
buildings; wood and stone were also used in buildings. The
house planning did not let any hindrance on the roads so
everything was well organized.
There were the government houses which were differently
executed, dwelling houses which ranged from single to several
stories with any rooms, public baths. From economic point of
10. ENBE │ FINAL PROJECT │ PART A – REPORT │ THE BETTER LIVABLE TOWN REPRESENTATION
view, it can be assumed that agriculture was their primary
professional. This is evident from the availability of the granary in
the city. The granary was constructed on the high foundation of
the burnt bricks. The city of Harappa had defensive outer walls.
The fortress was the centre of important buildings; most of these
settlements were built of bricks, chiseled stones and burnt bricks.
3.3 Conclusion
Harappa have a good drainage system and town planning.

Kong is 1,104 km². The population is over 7 millionand is one of the
most densely populated areas in the world.
4.1 History Background
Hong Kong was established as a colony of the British Empire after
the First Opium War (1839–42). Hong Kong Island was first ceded to
Great Britain in perpetuity, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and
then the New Territories was put under lease in 1898. It was occupied
by Japan during The Second World War (1941–45), after which the
British resumed controluntil 1997. The amalgam of British and

Chinese culture during the colonial era shaped the current culture of
Hong Kong.
As a result of the negotiations and the 1984 agreement between
China and Britain, Hong Kong was handed over to the People's
Republic of China and became its first Special Administrative
Region on 1 July 1997. Hong Kong has a different political system
from mainland China. Hong Kong's independent judiciary functions
under the common law framework.

- Solar energy
A 350 kW photovoltaic (PV)
installation has been installed
on the roof of the EMSD
Headquarters in Kowloon Bay.
The installation comprises a
solar array made up of more
than 2,300 PV modules which together has a total area of around
3,180 m2, and a smaller system made up of PV glass laminates.
Each PV module in the solar array is constructed in the form of a
rectangular panel and consists of 72 series-connected mono-crystalline
silicon PV cells. The panels are mounted on supporting
racks in an inclined manner and facing southwards so as to receive
maximum solar irradiation during the year.
In addition to these, PV glass laminates are installed on the viewing
gallery on the roof of the building. There are totally 20 sets of PV glass
laminates, each consisting of 100 series-connected mono-crystalline
PV cells sandwiched between two sheets of glass.
The d.c.output of the installation is converted into a.c. by a number of
inverters. The a.c. power generated by the PV installation
supplements the electricity supply from the power company to meet
the electrical power requirement of the building.

Overview
The planning of the future city is developed on the tourism island
of Hainan. Yinggehai, the planning region, is located in the south-west
of Hainan and in total covers an area of 176.2 sqkm. The focus area
covers 42.8 sqkm; it is one of the most saline areas of the region and
is mainly used for salt production by the use of salines. The main
themes of the “low-carbon city” are the storage and production of
renewable energy and its distribution for use according to demand, in
terms of a “smart city”. Low-building heights and eco-tourism are
incorporated into the concept.

Photovoltaic
A photovoltaic system, also photovoltaic power system, solar PV
system, PV system or casually solar array, is a power
system designed to supply usable solar power by means
of photovoltaic. It consists of an arrangement of several components,
including solar panels to absorb and directly
convert sunlight into electricity, a solar inverter to change the electrical
current from DC to AC.
5.4 Conclusion
The basis is provided by the urban design concept of a low carbon
“theme city”. In addition to the common mixed uses such as living,
working, shopping and leisure, the master plan provides for each
district a center within the city, with nine “units” each and a define
district function, For example, environmentally-friendly industries and
ecological living.

7. Conclusion
After using a few weeks to study the 3 type of towns
which is ancient town, present town and future town, it is
really challenging. I have to consider about the site, plan,
buildings, infrastructure, technology and etc. But it is also
a good time to explore more about a better livable town.
What I had learned from history is a good town
planning and natural green environment. In my new town
“Lerofeel”, it is more concentrate in green environment
that can be a more livable town with low carbon and
advanced transportation. There is a central park with a big
lake. It is an attraction of the town. It look fresh and easy
lifestyle.
