Introduction
1.
In this final project, we are require to built our
own future town. First, we need to know what is a
town and its characteristics. Then, we need to do a
lot of research on the ancient, present and even the
future cities or town. With these information. we
need to think about the needs of people and all the
elements that a perfect town should contain.
By the way, we need to come out a A4 report
and a 3 minutes video for our new town with our
the selected theme. After discussion, our group
decide to choose underwater town as our theme
because it is more fun and more challenging. In this
new town, the citizens should be Malaysian and the
population is about 15,000-30,000. The
information that we gained from our research can
act as a reference when we planning a town.

2. The Town
2.1 Definition
Cities are larger than town and they may merge with area surrounding with them.
Cities will have larger population than towns. One of the difference between cities and
towns is most of the important administrative or government offices, business centre,
industrial and others will situate in the cities. Thus, the mainly power will be in the cities.
Besides, cities also basically with a well planning before they build. They will complete with
the proper sanitation, water supply, roads and other modern amenities.
THE CITY
DEFINITION
THE TOWN
Towns are smaller than cities but bigger than villager. Unlike cities, they
generally will not expand into other areas.Their population are less than cities.
They may also contain the water supply, roads, clinic and other facilities.
However, they may not as advanced as the cities. On the other hand, a town is
small advanced than a village because it contain the basic needs of people to
satisfy people’s basic living requirement even though town is less developed
than a city.

2.2 Brief History
Brief History
During the Palaeolithic Age(Stone Age), humans live
like nomad, move from one place to another place. They
always change their living place. They will not stay at a
place too long. They normally will stay in cave, riverside or
tree as their temporarily shelter. They will move to where
they can get foods. Besides, they used simple shaped stone
as their tools to hunt and gather foods.
After a long time development, it reached Neolithic
Age. Humans stop their nomad lifestyle and started to live in a constant place. They
built permanent homes. Plus, they started to have cropping activities and captive
animals to get foods, skin and milk. Farming and herding
were the symbol of the Neolithic Age. Their tools also
became more advanced (made by copper)such as bows
and arrows. Of course, it also include spear tips.
During the Bronze and Iron Age, humans start to had
many activities such as they start to have some business.
This became very popular. They started to improve their
living standard. Moreover, they started to made their
tools by using metal to built their house and rafts.
Therefore, it came out an simple organisation system to let governing management
became more easier and run smoothly.
All of these were the begin of a village. As the village
become larger,it will become a town. After the town
become larger, a city is form. There were many ancient
cities such as Jericho, Babylon and Rome. These great cities
had well planning before they built. They were completed
with educational system, residential areas, transportation,
good land usage, business centre and others.

Humans live , work and have fun in different
type of communities. There are village, town and
city. Village is a small community. Then, a town is a
larger community that located outside or surround
the city. Town unlike city have modern
infrastructures but all the
service and infrastructure that mentioned above or the
basic needs of humans will be provided when planning a
town.
There are variety functional services and facilities that
a town provide for its inhabitants. These functional
attributes have infiltrate the inhabitants’ daily life. Besides,
there also considers as the basic requirements in
inhabitants’ living life. For examples, residential, commercial, communication and
others. Town and city also will have religion elements like temples, mosque and
cathedrals that make inhabitants to reduce the trouble that they need to go further
place.
Some other elements that makes a town:
• Housing
• Business centre
• Clinic or Hospital
• School
• Garden
• Restaurants

Nowadays, our earth is facing many problems such as global warming,
deforestation and different type of pollutions. All of these are influencing our
healthy. There also other social problems as well, violence, crime, drugs and
overconsumption resources and energy waste. Most of these problems are not
only affect our life, it also will give negative effects for our new generation.
Therefore, we should pay attention on the problems and put more efforts to
solve them.
A good town must not happen the problems above so it can be the better
liveable town for its residents. Furthermore, a good township will fulfils the

2.5 What is the future town?
Nowadays, with the climate change, there are many natural disasters occur
such as earthquake, flood, tsunami, eruptions of volcanic, sea water level increase.
Scientists predict that all of these natural disasters will occur more frequently in
our future. Hence, we need to take action quickly to minimise the effects cause by
the above disasters.
We should take an efficiently action and come up with researches on how
to solve all these problems. We should reduce the emission of waste gases that
released from industrial area and improve our energy efficiency. Plus, we have to
create some new inventions which can assist us to save our environment and find
out other method to solve our energy shortage such as renewable energy.
Future Town
In the future, population of humans will increase. Every inch of the land will be very
valuable. Towns in the future should be plan with ideas to fully use the limited land. Besides,
development of the community nowadays also brings many burdens to residents. Todays, life is
going too fast. Towns in the future should slow down the fast living lifestyle. Residents can
take a break, talk a walk or go for nature so they can relax and enjoy their life with more fun.
Moreover, the cost of living in the future should be lower and affordable for the
residents. There will be more business centre to provide more employment opportunity to
decrease rate of unemployment. There will be a safety town with low crime rate. Besides, a
very convenient transportation system will be prepare. In the future, high technology and
modern town will build for residents to increase their living standard and let them to live
happy and satisfy.

Ancient Cities/ Towns
3.1 Ancient cities/ towns that I concentrating on
Babylon,Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia is one of the earliest
civilisations in the world.
Mesopotamia can be divided into two
parts which is north part and south
part of the Baghdad. The south part of
the Baghdad was at the connection
between Tigris River and Euphrates
River. This place is known as Babylon.
Its name came to derive from bav-il or
bav-ilim which mean ‘Gate of God ’.
‘Babylon’ is came from Greek word. The city
is well known for its unique building, culture,
the Hammurabi Law and its Hanging
Garden. This consider as one of the seven

Harappa, Indus Valley
Indus is the earliest civilisation
in India. It located at the west part
of the India and it near the Indus
River. Indus had another name
which was from its main city,
Harappa. As we known, there were
two main cities at that time,
Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.
Harappa is an ancient city of
the Indus valley civilisation (c.
2600-1700BC). It is near the river. Its famous significant which let
everyone feel awesome are its well systematic city planning by the
knowledge of geometric and architecture. However, compare with
Mesopotamia civilisation, Indus civilisation do not left too much of the
informations and clear sources for us to do research on this mystery
ancient city.

3.2 History of Ancient Cities/ Town
Babylon
Mesopotamia was started at the south part
which was Summer. Sumeria (people at that
time) that started to live here and had farming
activities by invented irrigation system.
In the beginning, Babylon only is a minor city.
It started to become one of the most powerful
large city in Mesopotamia when its famous king,
Hammurabi(1792-1750 BCE) enlarged and
heightened the city. He had built opulent temples,
canals and made diplomacy with other cities.
However, this great ancient city started to fall
apart and dwindled in size and scope after the
Hammurabi King’s death. Then, Babylon was
sacked by the Hitties easily in 1595BEC.

ENBE | Final Project | Part A — Report | The Better Liveable Town Representation
By around 4000 BC, people begun to live in a constant place
(Indus River valley). They started farming activity and used
irrigation system to water their fields.
The population of the valley begun to increase because the
location of the place was near with the river. Therefore, it has
enough water supply and foods. When the small place became
crowed because of more and more people moved in, people
started to build cities.
With the development, there were two main cities formed
which were the Harappa and Mahenjo-Daro that near the Indus
Valley. Moreover, Lothal and the Sutkagen Dor were the main
port citiest at that time.
By around 2000 BC, the Harappa civilisation had collapsed.
No person know what is the reason that caused this collapse. It
may be invasion of Aryan or natural disasters.

3.3 What make them significant and what are the details?
Babylon
The city state of the Babylon had divided into main area which
were the city centre, walls, rural places and ports. It also had its own
fortress. Inside the city, there were castle, residential area, business
centre, religious place and more. The centre of the city is the
religious centre. Babylon was a well planning city because it satisfy
the basic needs of its residents. It can be proved by its wide and
straight roads.
Furthermore, the
Hammurabi Law which
emphasise
the equality between
all the sectors of
personnel also one of
the significant of
Babylon. This great
civilisation also invented many useful inventions which still give a big
contribution that helps us in our daily life such as wheel,
‘kincir’ and method of making bricks. Besides, the sculptures and the
stone pillars in Zigurat (religious place) also the famous significant
for Babylon.

ENBE | Final Project | Part A — Report | The Better Liveable Town Representation
As we know, Harappa had systematic city planning. This city
divided into two part and surrounded by walls. The main part of the
city contained the administrative centre, religious area which had
the pubic bathing place for ritual and cleaning purpose. Plus, it also
is a place for the storage of agricultural products.
The another pat of the city is residential area. Planning of the
Harappa city was influenced by the culture and knowledge in
geometric and architecture fields from Mesopotamia civilisation and
Mesir Purba civilisation. This city was arranged based on many
buildings that shaped like block or square-shaped. Furthermore,
that will be a straight road between every building. It had a
systematic transportation planning system.
Besides the roads, this city also connect with other cities by
river and roads. Moreover, this city had its own sewage system.
Last but not least, this
Harappa city had many
significant, it had its own
systematic sewage system,
it built a city by combined
the techniques and
knowledges that exchanged
or learned from
Mesopotamia civilisation
and Mesir Purba civilisation on how they built their cities and the
transportation planning skills(roads). All of these may because of
the openness of mind of Harappa’s residents.

3.4 Conclusion about the cities/ towns
After I did the research any investigation, I found out that all the
great cities were formed from a small village, then town and later it
developed into a city. Their location may be is one of the element that
helps them to become great city. Those varies type of economic activities
and population increase also made the cities became prosperous.
Besides, a great city will has its own social organisation to let every
residents have their own specialised work. All of these elements build a
success
city.
From my research, I can realised that every city have their own
characteristic and unique ways. For an example, Babylon had the famous
Hammurabi Law which let its residents live peacefully. Secondly, this town
also had a well planning before it build. For the Harappa, I like its
uniqueness of the city planning system such as the transportation
system(roads) and sewage system. Plus, location Harappa and the
openness of mind of this city also made it became great city in the past.
I am vey appreciate to the people in the
past because they had invented many useful
things that we still using in our daily life. Their
innovative thinking and their effort spirits really
make our new generation live in a comfortable
and convenient environment. Therefore, we
need to appreciate what we have now and
remember their contributions.

3.5 Information or element that I can use in my new future
town
According from my research on the two ancient cities,
Babylon, Mesopotamia and Harappa, Indus valley, I found that
the elements below are the main reasons why these both cities
became a great cities. There are:
CHONG CHIN PIN | 0319595| MISS RENEE |FNBE AUG 2014 |Taylor’sUniversity
22
1. Strategic Location
A good location is essential. This is because
build my town on a suitable place can make it become
a business centre. Economy of a place will improve the
development of a town.
2. A Systematic City Planning
My town will contain own the basic structures and elements that
should have such as government buildings, commercial area, residential
area, education area, religious area and others. The most important
elements that I will have in my town is port because my town build under
water so the port can act as a site for my town to exchange of goods with
other places. This may become one of source of
income for my town.
3. Disaster Relief Plan
This will help my town when happen
emergency situation. It can consider as a
preparation before any hazard happen. Therefore, I
can always let my residents live in a safe place.
4. Law
A system of rules that can regulating the actions of residents and may enforce
the imposition of penalties. It should become the protection of justice and fair to
every residents. I want my to be a suitable place for my residents to live. Besides, I
want them to feel safe because they are protected and reduce the crime rate.

Kulin Nation. They were hunter and gatherers. year1842, Melbourne
created a town. Then, it was proclaimed a city in year 1847.
The quick development growth of Melbourne was due to the
gold rush. Gold was discovered in Ballarat in 1850s. Then, the
population begun to increase, more and more people moved in to
seek their fortune in the gold field. This made Melbourne became
the largest city in Australia. At that time, many building and houses
started to build.
In the late 1920s, until the Canberra was built, Melbourne was
the federal capital of Australia from
year1901. Todays, although Sydney grew

An aboriginal settlement near the mouth of the Fraser River
called Musqueam was the beginning. Vancouver area was the home for
native people who flourished the forest, land and river for thousand
years.
Then, a spaniard who named José María Narváez reached to
Vancouver area. After that, in year1792, George Vancouver stated that
this land for Britain. In year1808, Simon Fraser reached here. The name
of Fraser River was named after him.
In 1860s, the settlement
named Gastown started. Settles
began to move in. Later, it had
enlarged to incorporated as the
townsite of Granville.Then, the
Canadian Pacific Railway had
chosen it to be the railhead of the
transcontinental railway and it
renamed Vancouver. This city became the important link in the trade
route between the Orient, Eastern Canada and Europe because the
railway was extended to the city to get the benefits from the seaport.
However, Vancouver was destroyed by fire in
year1886. It rebuilt in a short time and the first
train arrived in year1887. By 1901, Vancouver
was developed and it grew in a short time to
become a bustling city. After the Second World
War, Vancouver continued to develop.
In the late 20th century, Vancouver still

Therefore, tourism is one of the income source
for this country. Moreover, there are many
beautiful houses in Vancouver. Every design of the
house is different. Therefore, art and architecture
elements shows everywhere or any corner in
Vancouver city.
Vancouver provided many different recreational options for its residents
such as gardens. The climate of Canada is one
of the factors that will contributes the
recreational choices of the residents.
Moreover, Vancouver is famous by its great
education system. This city offers both public
and private schools. Plus it also provide good
post secondary options for the students.
Furthermore, beside a best place to live,
Vancouver also the great choice to be a working
place. It is a city near sea so it is a port city,

4.4 Conclusion about the cities/ towns
Melbourne, Australia and Vancouver, Canada, these two places
always in the list of best city to live in the world. Beside, both of
them also cities that near sea. These are the reasons that I chose
these two cities to do research. Both of them have a strategic place
for them to become a great trading city. They have their own port
to do their trading and shipping activities. All of these are the
sources of income of the cities.
Moreover, I realised that tourism
is an important element as it can bring
huge income for a city. The art display
and the architectural designed building
that shows everywhere in Melbourne
and Vancouver attract more tourists
to visit the cities.
Besides, I found out that
Vancouver is an ethnically and linguistically diverse city which
combined from different culture. There are strong religious influence
in the city. This show a belief system of the local. Therefore, places of
worships and religious buildings were provided. All the residents will
respect each other to create a peaceful neighbourhood.

The Future of the Towns and Better Townships
5.1 Case Study and Guidelines
Sub-Biosphere 2
Sub-Biosphere 2 is an
future underwater city
which is closed and self-sustaining.
It designed as a
base for aquanauts, tourists
and for oceanographic life
science study and research
purpose. It was inspired by
Phil’s favourite hobby, driving,
Jacques Cousteau and Ian Koblick and studying the original
Biosphere 2 scientific research facility in Arizona in student period.
The structure of the Sub-Biosphere 2
would act as a ‘global seed bank’, same as
Noah’s, it store and sustaining human, plants
and animals’ life. It would become new
habitat for around 100people in a long term.
This is because all of these will consider as
the minimum number that required to rebuild our species if any
man-made natural disaster happen and cause negative and serious
situation.
The designer believed that if human cannot avoid the runaway
climate change effects, human may be safer to live underwater. Sub-
Biosphere 2 in sea may be one of the choice that human live for a
long-term.

Air, water, food, electricity and others will be supply and
manage by the integrated systems of the Sub-Biosphere 2.
Besides, the central biome will monitors life-support systems.
There will be eight surrounding domes for humans, plant, and
animals to live and interact. Furthermore, the environment and
elements in the Earth, the regions of land, sea, air as known as
the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere which are
important in life will be rebuild in the city. These biomes recreate
a new Earth’s biosphere.
Different climatic zone on Earth will be recreates in each
biome. Plus, it will mimicking the Earth;s climates interlink to
exchange water and air flow between each zone. The city will
include five zones, the North Frigid Zone(Arctic), North
Temperate Zone, Torrid Zone, South Temperate Zone and the
South Frigid Zone(Antarctic).
Last but not least, the underwater biosphere may be the
part of vision of future that remaining residents can save

Water-Scraper
The Water-Scraper were
created by a Malaysian, who
named Sarly Adre Sarkum. It
is a liveable and functional
floating city.The concept
came from envisions a self-sufficient
structure that can
satisfy all the human’s need
such as food, air ,water and
electricity. It has its own
farming area and small forest,
it also generates electricity
by using solar, wind and wave
power on the structure’s
surface. Beside farming, it
also generate food though
aquaculture, hydroponics and
others.
Its back and support places are created for residents to live
and work in its depths. Furthermore, its bioluminescent tentacles
act as a habitat for sea fauna to live and gather while its kinetic
movements is collecting as energy. This is try to reduce provide
negative impacts to the environment.

Resource generation(power, food ,air and others), living,
work, entertainment, garbage disposal and maintenance are the
main components of the programme for the Water-Scraper.
The programme is spread evenly according to all the different
specific required external resource. For examples, wind
generators placed on the top, farming area also on the roof
garden. In addition, the residential area will be placed below the
sea level. It can gat the better natural light.
The Water-Scraper
can keep upright
because it is using a
ballast system and
balancing tanks to
maintain. Its tentacles
also one of the
elements to help this
city to balance when
the tentacles are

5.2 Conclusion about the cities and information or element
that I can use in my new future town
First, I had learned than zoning is ver important when planning
to built a city or town so I will plan a good town with systematic
zoning. For an example, an area for living, commercial area,
education area, agriculture place and more.
Besides, I will build a sustainable and
environment-friendly underwater town that
will not produce any give negative impact to
the environment. It can be self-sufficient that
fulfil all the human’s needs, air, food, water and
others. My town will have a resource
generation centre to generate the electricity for my residents. For
example, solar, wind, and wave biomass will be the resources for my
town to generate electricity.
Furthermore, I will maximise the green spaces in my town
even underwater will not contain any green plants but I can built a
garden to plant the flora. This may become a recreational place for
my residents to have a walk and relax. Plus, I also will add the green
plants in my town. This is not just a decoration for the town but it
also can provide oxygen for us.

6.1 Introduction to Clystus City
Clystus is a town which will build under the sea. It is a
underwater town. This town will locate on the north side of
the Pulau Ketam. It near the Pulau Ketam, Pulau Tengah and
Pulau Klang. Moreover, it have a strategic location which is near
to the largest port in Malaysia, Port Klang. Therefore, it can be a
bustling economic town, provide more income to the town
and residents. Beside, people from our nation’s capital, Kuala
Lumpur can reach the town in a short time.
Due to the climate change nowadays, we need to find a
place which is safe to live. Clystus town is aim to give a self-sufficient
and liveable town for residents. It is function as a
commercial centre, residential area, tourism attraction place
and others. It will be a potential of sustainable initiative, green

Clystus is jellyfish-liked fish. Its concept was came from
the jellyfish. I did refer to two type of jellyfish which is the
Crown Jellyfish and the Haliclystus Jellyfish. In addition, I also
came out some of the ideas from the Water-Scraper that I did
research. It will have the ballast system and balancing tasks as
the Water-Scraper to keep it upright.
The size of the town is 40 square kilometre. The
estimated population of this Clystus will be around 15,000 to
180,000 residents. Town Furthermore, the zoning of the town
will have all the basic requirement such as town hall,
residential area, services area and others.
The name of this town is
came out from the name of the
jellyfish, Haliclystus. This is because
more of my concept and building
principles were came from it.
Therefore, I just name my town,

6.2 How did I came up with the solution to create this
new town
The climate change of the Earth had caused many natural
disaster. such as seawater level rising, global warming,
earthquake, tsunami and more. Besides, human also had cause
many different problems. For examples, pollutions and littering
that destroy our environment. Furthermore, experts had said
that the natural disaster and man-made problems will be very
frequent in the future.
Therefore, my opinion is sea may be will be the best space
for us to live. Approximately 71%of the Earth’ surface is sea so
I believe living underwater is our future choice for live.

breath under the sea?
There are many ways for us to get oxygen
down to a human underwater colony. One is
the oxygen generator that generate oxygen.
We can access oxygen from sea water; we
extract oxygen from the hydrolysis of the
water itself. We also do reverse osmosis and
draw oxygen out of the water itself. We
suction it from the air it pump it down by
hose. This help the town to provide oxygen for
the residents.

Walkability is great in Clystus. Residents go
to their destinations by walk, cycle or take the
hyperloop. The streets have trees planted at

down the temperature and let residents feel
fresh and cool, making the streets more
comfortable for pedestrians.
Pedestrian trails, cycling trails and vehicle
trails on the roads are clearly divided. This
making it easier and safer for all residents.
Bridges will be built between buildings to
increase walkability. Green plants also will act as
a decoration of the bridge. The bridges play a
role in evacuating people in case of any
emergency case happen.
Bike sharing systems will be implemented
throughout the my town. Residents can just take
a random bike at the bike sharing stations and
cycle to their destination for free. I suggest
tourists to use the bike to travel my town if they
want to discover every beauty in any corner in

to let residents go back and forth between top
area and bottom area of the whole structure. It is
function like a connection between top area and
bottom area.

7. Conclusion
Human todays are living in critical time where the
resources of the Earth todays is declining dramatically. Moreover,
the demand to the resources also increasing. Therefore, we need
to come out a quick action to solve the problems.
When planning my town, I have learn that it is important to
look into many variety aspects in detail. We should not miss any
detail. This is to ensure that every residents of the town can live
in a high quality liveable town.
Besides, I learnt that doing research before planning a town
is vital. We can learn from the history. In addition, it will be
essential to to refer to the past and present cities or towns
before we build a town. Finally, I realised that act as a town
planner is not easy. It must look into multiple aspects in detail
and may facing challenges when plan a town.

  • 3. ENBE | Final Project | Part A — Report | The Better Liveable Town Representation Introduction 1. In this final project, we are require to built our own future town. First, we need to know what is a town and its characteristics. Then, we need to do a lot of research on the ancient, present and even the future cities or town. With these information. we need to think about the needs of people and all the elements that a perfect town should contain. By the way, we need to come out a A4 report and a 3 minutes video for our new town with our the selected theme. After discussion, our group decide to choose underwater town as our theme because it is more fun and more challenging. In this new town, the citizens should be Malaysian and the population is about 15,000-30,000. The information that we gained from our research can act as a reference when we planning a town. ENBE | Final Project | Part A — Report | The Better Liveable Town Representation 5.2 Conclusion about the cities and information or element that I can use in my new future town First, I had learned than zoning is ver important when planning to built a city or town so I will plan a good town with systematic zoning. For an example, an area for living, commercial area, education area, agriculture place and more. Besides, I will build a sustainable and environment-friendly underwater town that will not produce any give negative impact to the environment. It can be self-sufficient that fulfil all the human’s needs, air, food, water and others. My town will have a resource generation centre to generate the electricity for my residents. For example, solar, wind, and wave biomass will be the resources for my town to generate electricity. Furthermore, I will maximise the green spaces in my town even underwater will not contain any green plants but I can built a garden to plant the flora. This may become a recreational place for my residents to have a walk and relax. Plus, I also will add the green plants in my town. This is not just a decoration for the town but it also can provide oxygen for us. CHONG CHIN PIN | 0319595| MISS RENEE |FNBE AUG 2014 |Taylor’sUniversity 35

There are many ways for us to get oxygen down to a human underwater colony. One is the oxygen generator that generate oxygen. We suction it from the air it pump it down by hose. This help the town to provide oxygen for the residents.
