INTRODUCTION
This is our final project for Element of Natural and Build Environment and the lecturers
have assigned us to do a project related to the build environment which is Better Town
of The Future. The total marks for this project is 40%, 20% for individual work and 20%
for group work. This project also divided into 2 parts which is Part A and Part B. As Part
A is an individual work which needs to submit an A4 report and a video presentation
while Part B as group work needs to submit a model and presentation boards.
In this Part A, we need to propose a “X” town. A town is unique and very alive. The best
way to understand a town is to explore and investigate about a past present and future
town. With the information to be collected should propose about the people’s needs,
facilities, infrastructures and how it will sustain itself in the future.

THE TOWN
2.1 The Town Definition
A town is a build-up area with boundaries and local government. It is also place with
many shop lots, houses, stores and more. As a town, it is larger than a village but
smaller than a city.
2.2 What is the brief history of town?
The word “town” portions an origin with the German word Zaun, the Dutch word tuin,
and the Old Norsetun. The German word Zaun comes with the meaning of the word: a
fence of any material. An early borrowing from Celtic *dunom (cf. Old Irish dun, Welsh
din "fortress, fortified place, camp," dinas "city" )
In English and Dutch, the meaning of the word took on the sense of the space which
these fences enclosed. In England, a town was a small city that could not afford or was
not allowed to build walls or other larger fortifications, and built a palisadeor stockade
instead. In the Netherlands, this space was a garden, more specifically those of the
wealthy, which had a high fence or a wall around them (like the garden of palace Het
Loo in Apeldoorn, which was the example for the privy garden ofWilliamand
Mary at Hampton Court). In Old Norse tun means a (grassy) place between farmhouses,
and is still used in a similar meaning in modern Norwegian.
2.3 What makes a town?
Things that should include in a town to make it perfectly like a town:-

2.4 What makes a good town?
Sufficient water and food supply
Sufficient education and communication for citizens
Voluminous job opportunities for citizens
Fully equipped facilities for the public’s use
Sufficient shelters to live
Lots of green environment
Great transportation
Accommodates cyclists and pedestrians well
2.5 What is futuretown?
Future town provides good solutions to the problems facing by the current town. It finds
innovative ways to adapt the mistakes of current town too. There are also some
changes in future town such as require greening environment to adapt the climate
change. Also, technology in town will be advance in future town.

Ancient Cities / Towns
Xitang, China
3.1 History
Xitang is a famous town with thousands of years of history, lying in Jiashan Country in
Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province. It dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-
476 BC) and the Warring States Period (476 BC-221 BC). The town was a place of
strategic importance on the boundary of the Wu and Yue states. Its flat terrain is
marked by a quiet, natural environment with rivers running through it. The quiet water,
handsome bridges, and the reflections in the early morning and the rosy sunset, fishing
boats and the glistening lights in the evening, form an amazing picture full of a sense of
poetry which can only be seen in the south lower reaches of the Yangtze River. People
there, whether local residents or visitors, feel that this is fairyland. They even have no
idea as to whether people are wondering in the picture or the picture is moving in their
hearts.

In the town, there are well-preserved groups of buildings of the Ming Dynasty (1368-
1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) with relatively high artistic quality and research
value. It also boast a higher artistry and study value, thus being highlighted by the
experts at home and abroad studying antique buildings. It is famous for its large number
of covered corridors, lanes and brides.
3.2 What ancient town am I concentrating on?

3.3 What makes is a significant town and whatare the details?
Covered Corridor
The covered corridor is the most
well known scene in this town. It is
also the most distinctive feature
historic it offers compared with
other water towns. Consisting of
many sections, the whole covered
corridor is more than 1,000 meters
(about 1094 yards) long, attracting
visitors from all over the world with
its particular charm. Mostly, it is tile-
roofed and built along the riverside,
providing shelter for people to avoid
either the baking hot sun or the rain.
So, while visiting the town, you can never be caught in the rain or exposed to the
searing sun. One section of the corridor is the most elegant, with its carved decorative
patterns that are praised by tourists as being the height of artistic perfection. High-back
davenports are situated on one side of the covered corridor, along the river, where
passersby can rest. Walking along the corridor, watching the boats in the river, you will
feel drawn into the meditation of the past.

Ancient Lanes
In total, the town has about 122 small lanes,
and all are paved with stone slats. There are
also hundreds-years-old houses along the
lanes. Of the 122 lanes, Shipi Lane is the best
preserved which located on the west side of
Zhongfu Hall on West Street with length 68
meters, 1 meter wide and narrowest point
with 80 centimeters wide.Shipi Lane is paved
with 166 stone planks, each only 3 centimeters
thick, making them difficult to be chisel from
granite. This is why the lane is called Shipi
(which means “the skin of the stone”) Lane.
3.4 Conclusion about the town
There are the bridges between buildings which allocate citizens to pass through it. There
is also a beautiful scenery with combination of river and bridges. Xitang Town looks
peaceful and people can also experiencing the peaceful life of it.
3.5 What information or element that I can use to my new futuretown?
I might be consider about the boats as one of my transportation in my future
town
Green plant should be planted more in my new future town
I might be also consider the bridges for citizens to pass by from one place to
another place

Present Town
Cape Town, South Africa
4.1 History
Cape Town developed by the Dutch East India Company as a victualing (supply) station
for Dutch ships sailing to East Africa, India and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival on
6 April 1652 established the first permanent European outpost at Castle of Good Hope,
becoming the economic and cultural hub of the cape Colony. Until the Witwatersrand
Gold Rush and the development of Johannesburg. Cape Town was the largest city in
South Africa. Today it is one of the most multicultural cities in the world reflecting its
role as a major destination for immigrants and emigrants to South Africa. In 2011 the
metropolitan region had an estimated population of 3.74 million. The city was named
the World Design Capital for 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial
Design. In 2014 Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by The New
York Times.

4.2 What town am I concentrating on?
Cape Town is located in South Africa which is also the second-most populous city in
South Africa.
4.3 What makes is a significanttown and whatare the details?
Montebello Design Centre
Montebello Design Centre is one of Cape Town’s best-kept secrets. The centre features
more than 20 arts and craft studios and workshops, an historic greenhouse and nursery,
a forge, stunning restaurant and organic deli farm shop. This is also a non-profit
development project.
Montebello Design Centre is home to a broad spectrum of designers and artist, from
jewelers and painters to filmmakers and landscapers. It makes a delightful stopover for
lunches and visits to the various craft workshops and design studios.
4.4 Conclusion about the town
Cape Point, the most south-westerly tip of Africa, is a spectacular sight, covered in
endemic fynbos and home to breathtaking bays, beaches and rolling green hills and

valleys. Cape Town not only famous, it also used many green features technologies to
make it more sustainable.
4.5 What information or element that I can use to my new town?
I will consider about the culture in Cape Town which my new town will contain
many type of religion too.

The Future of Towns and better Towns
Portland, Oregon
History
Lewis & Clark scouted and mapped the Oregon Country after leaving St. Louis in 1804.
They spent a couple winters in the Pacific Northwest and they returned to Washington
D.C. in 1806 to extol the virtues of the New World.
In 1843, Tennessee drifter WilliamOverton and his friend, Boston lawyer Asa Lovejoy
were floating down the Williamette River in a canoe when they came upon the beauty
of the place we now call Portland. They beached their canoe and the marveled at the
beautiful mountains and the rich potential of the many trees they saw.

Overton didn’t have the quarter that was required to file a land claim, so he sold half of
his 640-arce share to Lovejoy for 25 cents. They began to clear the many trees, build
roads and build the first buildings. After a while, Overton decided to move on and sold
his half of the share to Francis Pettygrove.
Portland got its name when Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove flipped a coin in 1845.
Lovejoy was from Massachusetts and he wanted to name the new settlement Boston.
Pettygrove was from Maine and wanted to name the new town Portland. Pettygrove
won the coin toss two out of three times.
In 1850, about 800 residents called Portland home. There was a log-cabin hotel and a
newspaper, the Weekly Oregonian. Congress passed the Oregon Land Act, which
entitled every man or woman to 320 acres. Portland was incorporated in 1851 and it has
grown into the second largest city in the Northwest. Portland became a major
transportation center because of its proximity to Railroads and Rivers.
Oregon became the 33rd state to join Union in 1859. Prior to that time, it was known as
the Oregon Territory and it stretched from California to Canada along the Pacific Coast.
The Oregon Territory stretched east to the Rocky Mountains from the Pacific Ocean. The
Territory encompassed what are now the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana.
Conclusion
Portland is one of the greenest city in the world. Portland has fulfilled with extensive
green urban planning. Half of the power in Portland comes from renewable sources. The
city has developed 92000 acres of green spaces with a connected systemof trails and
parks ideal for walking and biking. Portland has the highest rate of biking to work of any
United States city and it was one of the first cities to develop a master plan for
pedestrians. The transit options in Portland include bus service and options unique to
this city such as MAX light rail, WES commuter rail and the Portland streetcar. An urban-
growth boundary has been established to contain the urban landscape and protect the
25 million acres of forest and farms that surround the city.
The use of renewable energy resources for the city power supply and green spaces in
the city that is suitable for walking and biking can be implemented in my future town to
make it more sustainable. The efficient public transports in the city can also lower down
the rate of air pollution of the city. This shows that it is important to have efficient
public transport in a town to decrease the air pollution in my future town.

The Greenish Town
6.1 how did I came up with the solution to create this new town?
I have done a lot of research about the ancient town, present town and future town. I
came up with some ideas while doing my research on those buildings. Besides that, I can
get some informations from the research on Xitang, Cape Town and Portland such as
the architecture buildings and features to be included in my future town’s plan. There
are many ideas by adding recreation facilities too such as resorts, sports centres,
swimming pools and more. The grid system also inspired me to create this new town.
6.2 What is the important characteristics and elements?
Green technologies
To build a green and healthy town, many green plants will be planted in my future town.
There are also bicycle lanes in my town, the rate of air pollution in my town will be
decreased also. Many plantations will be occurred surrounding the town such as oil
palm, coconut tree and more. The buildings in my town will be having green roofs.
Green roofs help to cooling the temperature of surroundings and hence reduce the
usage of air conditioner.

Transportation
Transportation is very important in the town. It allows people to reach the places they
want to go in a short time. There will be roads for car, bicycle lanes and pedestrian
walkway in my town. Pedestrian walkway mostly will be located nearby the sandy beach
and residential area.
Tourism
There will be a tourism area beside the beach. It is a good place to relax and get away
from the busy city life. There are also aquarium, aquatic theme park, sunbathing area
which can attract people and also help to increase the economy and population.

6.4 Conclusion about the Greenish Town
In my opinion, a future town does not need to be full of futuristic buildings and high-
tech building, it just needs to be friendly environment. That is why Greenish Town does
not have too fancy and futuristic buildings but green and sustainable buildings. Greenish
Town is just pretty good with green environment and it will be a simple yet eco-friendly
and sustainable city.

CONCLUSION
By completing this project, I can truly understand planning a town is not an easy
task. The main purpose for planning this town is to put in sustainable features to ensure
that the town can live by itself and not depends on outsiders to support them.
Collecting data help us to understand more about the components and elements
of a town. Also, The evolution of technology keeps going, there will be a huge different
between ancient architecture buildings and future architecture buildings. During this
early stage, we get to know how to catch up the evolution and try to practice it in our
projects.
