This document is a report by Yen Wei Zheng on designing a better livable town called Magnolia. It investigates elements of ancient, present and future cities to understand what makes a great city. It analyzes the ancient city of Athens and notes its historical landmarks and cultural significance. For the present city, it examines New York City's infrastructure like public transportation and Central Park. It also describes a concept for a floating city called Lilypad that could house refugees. The report then proposes the design for the new town of Magnolia, which would be a 40km2 floating town powered by renewable energy with parks and public transportation to be environmentally friendly.

1. Introduction
The idea of this project is to understand the
component and elements of a city and what makes a
better future city. I have investigated and examined
ancient and old city, present city and future city.
Collecting data that will help understand the type of
city that my group have selected.
I’ve also looked into documents, article, guideline
and issues regarding planning a better future city.

2. The City
2.1 A place where people live and work and is bigger
than a town.
2.2 Towns and cities have a long history, even though
opinions vary, most ancient settlement can be
considered as a city. A city made as central places of
trade for the profit of the associates living in close
proximity to others facilitates interaction of all kinds.
These relations create both positive and negative
externalities between other’s actions.
2.3 Cities usually have complex system for public
health, conveniences, land usage, housing area and
public transportation.
2.4 “What makes a city great? Among other things,
great cities welcome ethnic diversity, support and foster
the arts, have access to venture capital to spur
entrepreneurship and innovation and benefit from
healthy environments that provide clean air and water.”
-Dr. David Suzuki
2.5 The future city is filled with advanced and modern
facilities. It is a city floating on water which is mobility
due to the submarine that is directing the town’s course.

Ancient City
3.1 Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece.
Athens rules the Attica region and is one of the
world’s oldest cities.
3.2 Athens is recorded around 3400 years of history.
Classical Athens is a non-coastal location and was
a strong city-state that developed in conjunction
with the marine development of the port of
Piraeus. Home of Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s
Lyceum, it is broadly mentioned as the cradle of
Western civilization and the birthplace of
democracy due to the influence of its cultural and
political achievement during the 5th and 4th
centuries BC on the rest of the European
continent.
6. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
3.3 In classical period, Athens was a center for the
arts, learning and philosophy. Athens was also the
birthplace of Socrates, Pericles, Sophocles, and
many other prominent philosophers, writers and
politicians of the ancient world.
3.4 My conclusion about the city is that it is a place
full of historical landmark, there are Acropolis of
Athens, Pantheon, national Archaeological
museum, Temple of Olympian Zeus and much
more. Moreover it is rich in culture and
contemporary life, such as; Archaeologic hub,
museums, tourism, entertainment and performing
arts, sports and music.

3.5 Athens is also the first ever host city to held a
modern-day Olympic Games in 1896. The element
I’m using for my new future city is to build an
Olympic stadium and host the first ever Olympic
Games to be held on a floating city.

Present city
4.1 New York City
4.2 Lenape were the first native New Yorker. During
the 16th century, Europeans started to explore the
region, Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first
among them. In 1624 the Dutch sent 30 families
to work and live in a small settlement called New
Amsterdam. But in 1664, the British seized New
Amsterdam and rename the place New York City.
As time pass by, population grew in New York
City.

planning.
The roads, buildings are well plan and
organize.
Public transportation are sufficient and
scheduled. To reduce traffic jam, taking the
bus or a taxi is a better choice and it also
help reduce pollution.
10. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
Subway system is also a great way to get
around the city. The New York City Subway is
the largest subway system in the world.
4.4 New York is a beautiful place, I would surely visit
this unique and wonderful destination. It is
definitely a great place for shutterbugs.
4.5 Central park is an urban park and also a
recreational area, its distinctive is that it’s
located at the central of New York, surrounded by
business buildings and skyscraper.

In the future, can we live on the water if needed? Architect
Vincent Callebaut has in vision an innovation solution.
Concept:
His futuristic concept title: “Lilypad” will
accentually allow a city to reside on water. The
metropolis would float and houses many as 50,000
people, the design bears a resemblance to a
spaceship. However it is refer to as an Ecopolis, the
construction materials would include polyester fiber
and titanium dioxide which would soak up the
atmosphere’s pollution. An artificial lagoon is

submerged creating balance for the floating city.
The designer notes that the multi-functional
programming is based on 3 marinas and 3 mountains
dedicated respectively for the work, the shop and
the entertainments.
There will also be what is called planted housing
cross by allies and trees outline organically. The
underside of the floating city will reportedly serve as
a home to oceanic plants.

6.1 How did you came up with the solution to

create this town?
The first thing that comes to my mind was what I
should include in my floating on water town. A
future town must be more into leisure, a tourism
place for people to enjoy. But we mustn’t forget
the green and eco part in our life. I learn that
building structure and nature can be harmonize,
so I arrange the town in harmony with each
other’s characteristic.
6.2 What is the important characteristic and
elements?
Environmental friendly
Sufficient public transportation system and less car in the
town, thus reducing CFC release into the atmosphere. Car
rental is available.
Self-sustainable energy
Able to harvest electricity to power the entire city.
Beneath each branch out zone is a giant water turbine,
generating power for the whole city 24/7.
Great sea view
As my town is floating on the sea, some of the houses are
constructed by the edge of the zone, so the sea can be
view through inside the house.
Recreational park
15. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Livable Town Representation
There’s a central park located at the center of a mega
mall. People can just go and enjoy the greenery.
Public transportation
There’s a bus stop in every 2-4 miles because no out
station car can enter so that traffic jam can be avoided.
Lots of scheduled bus will be going around the town, so no
worries about missing the bus or waiting too long for it.
6.3 Name of my town – (Magnolia)
Size of town – 40km2
Population – 150,000
Location – Selangor, Malaysia
6.4 Conclusion about the new X town
I think that this town will be a main attraction as a
tourism, visitor will be able to relax and enjoy
themselves. It part away from the busy city life, that’s
why it is located on the sea.

7.Conclusion
Planning a town is no easy job, it’s not
something that can be done overnight. There’s
a saying that a forest can’t be grown in a day,
it takes time to build up a systematic town
from scratch which includes having a well
organize transportation and road system,
building laws, market, business center,
education system and land usage.
The importance of planning a town is to
learn from others, I’ve done some research on
ancient, present and future cities or town, I
found out that that they each differ from their
character. I can see the world is constantly
changing so I investigate the development of
buildings. Moreover I realize that green plays a
big part in our daily life as it let us relax and
get away from the hustle and bustle city life.
Lastly, I hope that my town will provide
enough resource and luxury to the citizen.
