Analyzing Empire State Building - Lean Project DeliveryJamal Nelson, CCM
The document analyzes the design and construction of the Empire State Building project from the perspective of Lean Project Delivery System (LPDS). It finds that several lean principles were employed during the Empire State Building's construction in the 1930s, before lean concepts were formally developed. Key stakeholders like the owners, architects, and contractors collaborated effectively from the early stages, integrating cost and schedule considerations into the design. The design simplified construction and optimized the production system to enable timely completion. Overall, the management processes used on the project resembled the collaborative, value-focused approach advocated by LPDS.
The document discusses safety issues during the construction of tall buildings like the Empire State Building. While official records state that only 5 workers died during construction of the Empire State Building from various accidents like falls, some workers may have fallen to their death from the building as well. Even with safety protocols in place, falls remain a leading cause of construction worker deaths today, often due to issues like lack of training, planning, inspections, or complacency regarding safety procedures.
This document summarizes findings from a green building study. It includes presentations from experts in green building and real estate. The study found that owners of green buildings expect increased green building activity in the future due to benefits like reduced costs, improved productivity and health of occupants, and higher building value. Building managers observed higher occupancy rates and rental prices for green buildings compared to non-green buildings. Tenants considered health and energy efficiency most important when selecting office space. Larger, publicly-traded companies had more positive views of green building benefits. Modern architecture emerged in the early 19th century due to the Industrial Revolution. It is characterized by simple geometric forms, minimalism, and an emphasis on form following function [1]. Some key highlights of early modern architecture include the Crystal Palace built in 1851 and the Eiffel Tower built in 1889, which featured new building materials like iron and glass [2]. Important works of late modern architecture include Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple from 1905 and the Chrysler Building from 1930, which helped popularize the use of steel and concrete in skyscrapers [3].

On September 11th, 2001, four passenger airliners were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists and deliberately crashed into buildings, killing nearly 3,000 people. Two planes crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. The South Tower collapsed first after burning for 56 minutes, followed by the North Tower after burning for 102 minutes. Conspiracy theorists have proposed alternative theories claiming that the towers were brought down in a controlled demolition rather than by the impacts and fires from the planes. However, the 9/11 Commission and scientific consensus found no evidence to support these alternative theories.
The document discusses conspiracy theories around the 9/11 terrorist attacks and questions the official report. It provides background on the author and their qualifications. It then outlines several theories ranging from unlikely to truly unhinged, questioning aspects of the official report such as the explanation for building collapses and lack of investigation into eyewitness accounts.
The document summarizes information about several famous structures from around the world, including their locations, purposes, sizes, and historical significance. It discusses the Great Pyramid of Giza as the oldest and tallest pyramid ever built. It also mentions the Golden Gate Bridge as the longest suspension bridge span when completed in 1937. Additionally, it provides details about the Burj Khalifa as the world's tallest man-made structure ever built located in Dubai.
The document summarizes the history of the World Trade Center in New York City and details the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 that destroyed the twin towers. It describes how hijacked planes were flown into each tower, causing fires that led to their collapse. It also notes that 7 World Trade Center collapsed later that day from uncontrolled fires. Some theories are presented that question whether the towers could have collapsed from the plane impacts and fires alone or if explosives may have been involved. Sources used for the information are listed at the end.
The document discusses conspiracy theories around the September 11th attacks in the United States. It summarizes the official account of the hijackings and crashes of United Airlines Flight 93, American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, and American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 into the World Trade Center towers. It then discusses various conspiracy theories, including that the towers were brought down via controlled demolition rather than fire, that explosives were planted in the buildings, and that molten steel found in the rubble proves explosives were used. The document aims to examine the evidence for these alternative theories.
The twin towers in New York City, which were over 1,300 feet tall each and housed over 50,000 workers, were attacked on September 11, 2001 when 19 terrorists associated with al-Qaeda hijacked 4 planes and crashed 2 of them into the towers. The planes exploded on impact, causing fires that led the towers to collapse within 15 seconds, killing thousands of people. The attack was planned by Osama bin Laden and marked a major disaster for the United States.

The Empire State Building is located in New York City at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It was designed by William F. Lamb and funded by John J. Raskob and Pierre S. du Pont as part of a competition to build the world's tallest building. The Empire State Building was officially opened on May 1, 1931 and was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. It also contains a motion simulator attraction called the New York Skyride on the second floor and obtained LEED Gold certification in 2011 for sustainable practices that save $4.4 million per year.
The Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in New York City until September 11, 2001, when they were destroyed in a terrorist attack. Standing 450 meters tall with 110 floors, the towers were the center of world trade and took five years to build starting in 1971. They survived previous disasters like a 1975 fire but could not withstand the coordinated terrorist planes that struck on 9/11, leading to their destruction. The site is now memorial dedicated to those killed in the attack.
The document summarizes the design and construction of the Freedom Tower, which replaced the original World Trade Center towers destroyed on 9/11. It describes the competition between architects Daniel Libeskind and David Childs to design the building, and how their collaborative efforts led to an ultra-modern skyscraper with reinforced concrete and security features to withstand terrorist attacks. The Freedom Tower aims to serve as both an iconic symbol of New York's resilience and a safe, inviting space for workers.

Ancient Greece was a civilization that lasted from the 8th to 6th centuries BC to the 600s AD. Society was stratified, with upper, middle, and lower classes. Men were citizens and held public roles, while women were confined to domestic life. Marriage was usually arranged, and divorce was possible. Families were patriarchal, with husbands and fathers in authority. Children were raised communally in Sparta but by mothers in Athens. Education differed by gender and class. The arts, including architecture, sculpture, and music flourished. Religion centered on the Olympian gods and their myths. Festivals honored the gods through processions, sacrifices, and competitions. Upon death, souls went to Hades and bodies received fun
Daily Life in Ancient Greece was divided into many periods and consisted of complex social structures. Citizens had rights not afforded to women, foreigners, or slaves. Family life was patriarchal and centered around the oikos or household. Children were raised communally in Sparta but had more schooling in Athens. Religion heavily influenced all aspects of life and the Greeks believed in many gods and held various festivals in their honor.
Farming originated around 8000 BCE in the Fertile Crescent region. The first crops farmed were cereal grains like wheat and barley, as well as pulses and the bottle gourd vegetable. Sheep and goats were among the earliest domesticated animals, as they meet the criteria of being able to be bred and kept in captivity without being aggressive or panicking.
Farming is believed to have originated around 10,000 years ago in East Africa and the Middle East by First Nations peoples at the end of the Ice Age, according to scientists. The first crops grown were likely wheat and barley, as their seeds are commonly found from that era. Dogs were possibly the first domesticated animals, kept as pets starting 13,000-30,000 years ago, while sheep, goats, cattle and pigs were domesticated for food around 9000-7000 BC.
Farming originated around 10,000 BC in an area known as the Fertile Crescent. People in this region began deliberately planting seeds from local grasses and grains that they gathered, such as barley and wheat, aided by favorable climate conditions. One of the earliest farming settlements was Catalhoyuk in present-day Turkey. Farming then spread to other parts of the world and involved domesticating animals like goats, sheep and pigs to provide food, fiber and labor. Over time, humans cultivated a wider variety of crops and domesticated additional animals, advancing early agriculture.
The first farming occurred around 10,000 years ago in areas like China, the fertile crescents of India, Egypt, and Western Asia. The earliest crops grown were wheat, barley, and peas, though the specific crops depended on location. Squash was also grown around this time. The first domesticated animals were dogs, which were used for hunting and protection of human tribes. Dogs evolved from wolves and today there are over 200 purebred dog species.

3. Introduction The Empire State Building is by far the greatest feature of New York besides the Twin Towers and the Statue of Liberty. These three structures are the national landmarks of New York City although some people also say Broadway is too. The Empire State Building is the tallest building in New York because of the destruction of the Twin Towers. The Empire State Building is heart of New York and the number one paid tourist attraction in the United States of America. Amazingly there are 73 elevators in the whole building! At the start, there were only 64 but the people added 9 more elevators. Imagine all those elevators!
4. History The Empire State building was built in 1930 and it got finished in 1931 taking only 410 days! At the time there were other buildings in New York City who also was trying to claim the tallest skyscraper in the world. These buildings were the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall Street. The Empire State Building was developed by a farmer named John Thompson who actually had a farm there in the eighteenth century. The Empire State almost faced the same fate as the Twin towers in 1945 when a B-25 Mitchell hit the North side of the tower in between the 79th floor and the 80th floor which killed fourteen people and almost killed a elevator operator who fell 75 stories and survived which made a world Record. There will be a video on the next slide for this.
5. Video for Crash Here is a video of the crash site. There was no actual footage of the plane crashing. This is the chaos that happened after. actual crash
6. Construction The Empire State Building was based on blueprints by the firm Shreve, Lamb, Harmon which got delivered within 2 weeks. When the building was finished, it rose to the height of 1250 ft (381m) to the 102nd floor. The actual height is 443.09 m in height including the antenna and the Art Deco floors. The square feet of the building is 2,180,000 square feet (office space). The building has 70 miles of piping, 2,500,000 ft of electrical wire, and 9,000 faucets. It is undergoing a 500 million dollar renovation right now. This is a video of the construction back in 1930
7. Suicides/Shootings At the Empire State Building, there have been over thirty suicides, which is thirty too many. Suicides started even before the building was finished. After five attempt of these, a fence got put around the construction areas so people don’t suicide. Although, there was one person who got almost famous from this even though the person was dead. This is what happened, a woman jumped from the observation deck and landed on a limousine at bottom in a very awkward position and a student photographer took a picture which got put in a magazine most people know as the Life Magazine. In her belongings up at the observation deck, there was a note that said “I’m not a good for anybody….”.
8. Architecture The Empire State Building has 102 floors and it has two observation decks. The needle it has is covered with satellite dishes for radio stations and TV channels. This is because of the destruction twin towers which had most of the radio stations on the north tower. The Empire State Building offices over 10 companies. These companies are the Art Deco, Altitalia, Boy Scouts of America, National film board of Canada, Croatian National Tour Board, Filipino Reporter, Human Rights Foundation, Human Rights Watch, Polish Cultural Institute in New York, Senegal, TAROM, The Kings College, Nathaniel Branden Institute.
9. Comparisons The Empire State Building got surpassed as the tallest tower in New York when the World Trade Center (WTC) was built. The Empire State Building held the tallest tower/ building in New York City for 23 consecutive years. After 43 years, the Empire State Building became the tallest building in New York City again because of the destruction of the twin towers in 2001. Here is a video.
10. Comparisons P2 The Empire State building is the 15th tallest building in the world. On this picture, it shows some of the buildings that are taller than the Empire State Building (Including the Burj Khalifa). Although it isn’t the tallest building in the world anymore, it is one of the few skyscrapers that a history of going through hardships and making it through other things like plane crashes and a few minor fires. It is also very important to American history for being the tallest building in the world for the longest ever. The Empire State Building is now the one-third of the tallest building in the world but it is just the same size when Americans look up to it. The Empire State Building is the fourth tallest building in the U.S.
11. Floodlights The floodlights of the Empire State Building reflects on things that happen around the world. It is not alwayson, it is only on during important events. These floodlights wereinstalled to the Empire State Building in 1964 for no other reason thanto use it to celebrate things and even mourn for things like in 2004, the actress of King Kong died where the lights were turned on to honor Fray ray who died. The colours were unwritten. They also change colours for holidays like Christmas and Halloween. The floodlights can have up to 3 different colours at one time.
12. Dirigible Terminal There was a Dirigible Terminal on the Empire State Building but it wasn’t aloud to be put in use because of the updrafts of wind caused by the building itself. This would cause some dirigibles to loosen and float away accidentally. Also it is very dangerous because if you are on board, you could get blown away from the wind around the building. Also it could hit the building accidentally and knock part of the building off which could lead to the fall of the Empire State Building. Also the fumes of the dirigible could get into the ventilation system and poison the office workers with toxic fumes. As you can see in this picture, when the dirigible leaves it could knock down the spire if the pilot isn’t very careful which could kill hundreds of people.
13. Pop Culture There are lots of songs and movies with the Empire State Building in it. Below are some movies. -King Kong -Love Affair -Sleepless in Seattle -Empire -Independence Day -Knowing -When Worlds Collide -The Day After Tomorrow -Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Lightning Thief -Fail-Safe -Elf
14. Observation Decks/Sky ride The Empire State Building has two observation decks which are on the 86th and 102nd floor where people can see the entire New York city. These decks have amazing views that shows you the sea, parts of the Statue of Liberty, and the Chrysler Building. The skyride takes about 20 minutes with a pilot who talks about the Empire State Building and talks a little it about ground zero, where the twin towers use to be. They might do a small salute or close their eyes and think of the people for their remembrance.
