http://kkpradeeban.blogspot.com/2015/11/cassowary-middleware-platform-for.html Abstract: Smart devices sense the environment through their sensors and leverage the contextual information derived from the sensor readings to satisfy system requirements such as energy and carbon efficiency and user preferences. Smart buildings compose of smart devices, and local sensors of the devices and device controllers in a coordinated network. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) offers a centralized view of the entire networking data plane elements to a logically centralized controller. While smart buildings and ubiquitous computing are heavily researched, later advancements in networking are not exploited in achieving tenant-aware smart buildings. This paper describes the research for the design, prototype implementation, and preliminary assessments of Cassowary, a middleware platform for Context-Aware Smart Buildings with Software-Defined Sensor Networks. By extending SDN paradigm and leveraging the message oriented middleware protocols to seamlessly connect the smart devices of the buildings to the centralized SDN controller, Cassowary enables context-aware Software-Defined Smart Buildings.

This is some input for a panel discussion about "Challenges of Cloud Computing-based Systems" I attend at the 9th International Conference on Cloud Computing, GRIDs, and Virtualization (CLOUD COMPUTING 2018) in Barcelona, Spain in February 2018. Cloud-native applications (CNA) are build more and more often according to microservice and independent system architecture (ISA) approaches. ISA involves two architecture layers: the macro and the micro architecture layer. Software engineering outcomes on the micro layer are often distributed in a standardized form as self-contained deployment units (so called container images). There exist plenty of programming languages to implement these units: JAVA, C, C++, JavaScript, Python, R, PHP, Ruby, ... (this list is almost endless) But on the macro layer, one might mention TOSCA and little more. TOSCA is an OASIS deployment and orchestration standard language to describe a topology of cloud based web services, their components, relationships, and the processes that manage them. This works for static deployments. However, CNA are elastic, self-adaptive - almost the exact opposite of what can be defined efficiently using TOSCA. For these kind of scenarios one might mention Kubernetes or Docker Swarm as container orchestrators which are intentionally build to operate elastic services formed of containers. But these operating platforms do not provide expressive and pragmatic programming languages covering the macro layer of cloud-native applications. So it seems there is a gap and the question arises, whether we need further (and what kind of) macro layer languages for CNA?

This document summarizes the PhD work of Pradeeban Kathiravelu on improving scalability and resilience in multi-tenant distributed clouds. It describes two approaches: 1) SMART uses SDN to provide differentiated quality of service and service level agreements by dynamically diverting and cloning priority network flows. 2) Mayan componentizes big data services as microservices that can be executed in a network-aware and scalable way across distributed clouds. Evaluation shows these approaches improve speedup and ensure SLAs for critical flows compared to network-agnostic distributed execution.

This document discusses new models of communication for future internet architectures. It proposes moving away from the traditional hierarchical and centralized internet model towards a more fluid, porous and adaptive network. The network would be made up of heterogeneous and programmable 3D environments, enabling ubiquitous computing, reconfiguration and multiphasic voice, data and video flows. It also discusses principles like variation, adaptation and heredity that could drive the evolution of such networks, moving towards more flexible syntax and semantics to enable new types of virtual peer-to-peer structures.

Engineering large-scale Cyber-Physical Systems–like robot swarms, augmented crowds, and smart cities – is challenging, for many issues have to be addressed, including specifying their collective adaptive behaviour and managing the connection of the digital and physical parts. In particular, some approaches propose self-organising mechanisms to actually program global behaviour while fostering decentralised, asynchronous execution. However, most of these approaches couple behavioural specifications to specific network architectures (e.g.,peer-to-peer), and therefore do not promote flexible exploitation of the underlying infrastructure. Conversely, pulverisation is a recent approach that enables self-organising behaviour to be defined independently of the available infrastructure while retaining functional correctness. Currently, however, no tools are available to formally specify and verify concrete architectures for pulverised applications. Therefore, in this work we propose to combine pulverisation with multi-tier programming, a paradigm that supports the specification of the architecture of distributed systems in a single code base, and enables static checks for the correctness of actual deployments. The approach can be seamlessly implemented by combining the ScaFi aggregate computing tool-chain with the ScalaLoci multi-tier programming language, paving the path fora coherent support to the development of self-organising cyber-physical systems, addressing both functional (behaviour) and non-functional concerns (deployment) in a single code base and modular fashion.

ScaFi-Web, A Web-Based application for Field-based Coordination

Field-based coordination is a model for expressing the coordination logic of large-scale adaptive systems, composing functional blocks from a global perspective. As for any coordination model, a proper toolchain must be developed to support its adoption across all development phases. Under this point of view, the ScaFi toolkit provides a coordination language (field calculus) as a DSL internal in the Scala language, a library of reusable building blocks, and an infrastructure for simulation of distributed deployments. In this work, we enrich such a toolchain by introducing ScaFi-Web, a web-based application allowing in-browser editing, execution, and visualisation of ScaFi programs. ScaFi-Web facilitates access to the ScaFi coordination technology by flattening the learning curve and simplifying configuration and requirements, thus promoting agile prototyping of field-based coordination specifications. In turn, this opens the door to easier demonstrations and experimentation, and also constitutes a stepping stone towards monitoring and control of simulated/deployed systems. Componentizing Big Services in the Internet

Big services need to be componentized into microservices and composed together to execute as distributed applications across organizations and users on the internet. By using software-defined networking and sending the service to the data instead of sending data across the globe, these componentized microservices can be executed in a network-aware manner based on policies that map services to the network. This allows for subscription-based inter-domain communication when composing big services in a software-defined inter-cloud.

Services that access or process a large volume of data are known as data services. Big data frameworks consist of diverse storage media and heterogeneous data formats. Through their service-based approach, data services offer a standardized execution model to big data frameworks. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) increases the programmability of the network, by unifying the control plane centrally, away from the distributed data plane devices. In this paper, we present Software-Defined Data Services (SDDS), extending the data services with the SDN paradigm. SDDS consists of two aspects. First, it models the big data executions as data services or big services composed of several data services. Then, it orchestrates the services centrally in an interoperable manner, by logically separating the executions from the storage. We present the design of an SDDS orchestration framework for network-aware big data executions in data centers. We then evaluate the performance of SDDS through microbenchmarks on a prototype implementation. Pradeeban Kathiravelu, Ph.D.

Data centers offer computational resources with various levels of guaranteed performance to the tenants, through differentiated Service Level Agreements (SLA). Typically, data center and cloud providers do not extend these guarantees to the networking layer. Since communication is carried over a network shared by all the tenants, the performance that a tenant application can achieve is unpredictable and depends on factors often beyond the tenant’s control. We propose ViTeNA, a Software-Defined Networking-based virtual network embedding algorithm and approach that aims to solve these problems by using the abstraction of virtual networks. Virtual Tenant Networks (VTN) are isolated from each other, offering virtual networks to each of the tenants, with bandwidth guarantees. Deployed along with a scalable OpenFlow controller, ViTeNA allocates virtual tenant networks in a work-conservative system. Preliminary evaluations on data centers with tree and fat-tree topologies indicate that ViTeNA achieves both high consolidation on the allocation of virtual networks and high data center resource utilization.

Cloud network systems and applications are tested in simulation and emulation environments prior to physical deployments, at different stages of development. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enables separating logic and execution from the data plane consisting of switches and hosts, to a logically centralized control plane. The global view and control available to the controller enable incremental updates, management, and allocation of resources to the networks. However, unlike the physical networks or the networks emulated by the emulators, current network simulators still lack integration with the SDN controllers. Hence, currently it is impossible to efficiently orchestrate a simulated network through a centralized controller, or realistically model the controller algorithms and SDN architectures without having the resources for a one-to-one emulation. To address this, this paper presents SDNSim, an SDN simulation middleware, which leverages the principles of SDN for continuous development of cloud and data center networks. SDNSim is an “SDN-aware” network simulator that integrates with the controller through plugins for southbound protocols such as OpenFlow, to execute the algorithms incrementally thus deployed in the control plane.

Data centers consist of various users with multiple roles and differentiated levels of access. Tenant execution flows can be of different priorities based on the role of the tenant and the nature of the process. Traditionally enterprise network optimizations are made at each specific layer, from the physical layer to the application layer. However, a cross-layer optimization of cloud networks would utilize the data available to each of the layers in a more efficient manner. This paper proposes an approach and architecture for differentiated quality of service (QoS). By employing a selective redundancy in a controlled manner, end-to-end delivery is guaranteed for priority tenant application flows despite congestion. The architecture, in a higher level, focuses on exploiting the global knowledge of the underlying network readily available to the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controller to cater the requirements of the tenant applications. QoS is guaranteed to the critical tenant flows in multi-tenant clouds by cross-layer enhancements across the network and application layers.

Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.

Climate change's impact on the planet forced the United Nations and governments to promote green energies and electric transportation. The deployments of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) systems gained stronger momentum due to their numerous advantages over fossil fuel types. The advantages go beyond sustainability to reach financial support and stability. The work in this paper introduces the hybrid system between PV and EV to support industrial and commercial plants. This paper covers the theoretical framework of the proposed hybrid system including the required equation to complete the cost analysis when PV and EV are present. In addition, the proposed design diagram which sets the priorities and requirements of the system is presented. The proposed approach allows setup to advance their power stability, especially during power outages. The presented information supports researchers and plant owners to complete the necessary analysis while promoting the deployment of clean energy. The result of a case study that represents a dairy milk farmer supports the theoretical works and highlights its advanced benefits to existing plants. The short return on investment of the proposed approach supports the paper's novelty approach for the sustainable electrical system. In addition, the proposed system allows for an isolated power setup without the need for a transmission line which enhances the safety of the electrical network
