Introduction of Electromagnetic field
• The electromagnetic field is a physical field produced by electrically
charged objects
• Types of radiation in electromagnetic spectrum include radio waves,
micro waves, IR, Visible light ,X- rays & gamma rays.
• The main one are –
• Electrotherapy
• Magneto therapy
• Phototherapy: is based on the use of visible light ,IR,UV light
23/05/2020 Electromagnetic Therapy (Dr Akshay Shetty) 4
Definition of Magneto therapy
• It is a therapeutic technique that consists of applying artificial
magnetic fields on an affected part of the human body
controlling intensity and frequency.

Biological effects of Magnetotherapy
Cellular effects
Enrich the oxygen in the cell
Improves the utilisation of O2
Increases the metabolism
Enhances ATP production
Organ and system
• Osseous tropic effect
• Collagen production
• Calcium deposit
• Stimulation of hyaluanoic acid synthesis
23/05/2020 Electromagnetic Therapy (Dr Akshay Shetty) 6
Contd…
Vascular effects
• Vasodilation
• Improvement of O2 partial pressure
Analgesic effects
• there is an evident analgesic effect but the genesis is still unknown
ANS
• Increases chemical mediation levels as Catecholamine (Adrenalin
,noradrenalin) or Acetylcholine

Types of Artificial magnets
Non stationary
Works only when connected to
electricity
Pulsed
Pulsed generator connected to a
coil----Magnetic field---Current
flows in tissues
Stationary
These are fully charged with
electric current & remains
permanently magnetised(Earrings,
bracelets, necklace, pallets)
i. Unipolar
ii. Bipolar
23/05/2020 Electromagnetic Therapy (Dr Akshay Shetty) 8
Application norms
• The patient must not introduce metal objects
• The therapy time is 30 minutes to 2 hours maximum
• It is better for the affected zone of the patient to be direct contact with
solenoid
• This therapy can be complimented with other therapies
23/05/2020 Electromagnetic Therapy (Dr Akshay Shetty) 9
Basic guidelines of Magneto therapy
• All the treatment should be started at lower settings
• Change and reactions should be observed to allow adjustment of
treatment settings
• An increase in pain may occur which is positive sign of response to
therapy (Reaction phase)
23/05/2020 Electromagnetic Therapy (Dr Akshay Shetty) 10
Indications of Magneto therapy
• Spondylosis
• Muscle spasm
• Sciatica
• Trigeminal neuralgia
• Gout
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Tropic ulcers
• Fractures
• Osteoarthritis
• Osteomyelitis
• Dysmenorrhea
• Sinusitis
• Depression
• Migraine
23/05/2020 Electromagnetic Therapy (Dr Akshay Shetty) 11
Contraindications of Magneto therapy
• Acute infections
• Haemorrhagic foci
• Cardiac pacemakers
• Pregnancy
• Tumours
• Hydrocortisone treatment
• Vascular obstruction
