2. History of Department
- The training of engineers for electrochemical processes was
organized in 1963 in Kirov Polytechnic Institute (now Vyatka State
University).
- The science researches about electroplating were started from
1967 with collaboration of young lecturers and students of senior
years
- The Department of Electrochemical Production Technology was
established in 1969 according to order of Ministry of High
Education (RSFSR) »
3. Major research development of Department
- Studies of hydrogen absorption under electroplating. Connection
between hydrogen absorption and pH of near-electrode layer was
detected and investigated. T.M. Ovchinnicova and L.I. Kovyazina
were decorated by medal of ENEA after training to perfection of
electrolyte for cadmium coating without hydrogen absorption
- Effect of pH of near-electrode layer upon stability of sodium
amalgam was investigated. Results permitted to select optimal pH
for electrolysis in production of chlorine and alkali on Kirov-
Chepetsk chemical plant.
Four Ph.D theses were defended under the guidance of
Ovchinnicova T.M.
4. Major research development of Department
- The technology of manufacture of cathodes from copper
monochloride was developed and introduced for replacement of
silver chloride in wateractivated chemical current sources of
special purpose.
- The research of processes in medium temperature Li-S
accumulator was performed for creation of transport energy
source.
Five Ph.D theses were defended under the guidance of
Khranilov Yu.P . and Shishkina S.V
5. Department have modern equipment for
scientific research: potentiostates “Volta” and
“Elins”, impedancemeter «Z-2000» with
computer control, have pilot galvanic line with
modern venting and rectifier devices.
Department carry out scientific research with
use of infrared spectrometer, a differential
scanning calorimeter, derivatograph, belonging
to science education center of Vyatka State
University.
Department use scanning and atomic force
microscopy (of science education center
“Nanotechnology”) for study the surface
properties of different objects.
6. Department of Electrochemical Production Technology of
VSU cooperate with the Russian Chemical-Technological
University, Mendeleev (Moscow), St. Petersburg Institute of
Technology, University of Kuban (Krasnodar), Kazan
Chemical-Technological University.
The active cooperation includes contacts of young
scientists, defense of thesis, participation in scientific
conferences held in VSU and in the above universities,
exchange of scientific and teaching materials, joint
publications.

9. Directions of scientific work
The general scientific directions of
department were established on basis of
a solution of particular problems in the
performance of contracts and
dissertations.
19 candidates were trained by
Department.
Current research activity of the
department is based largely in line with
the priority areas of engineering and
technology: «The rational conservancy
of nature», «The technologies of
manufacture of membranes and
catalytic systems»; «The technologies
of processing and utilization of
technogenic substances and waste
products»
10. Directions of scientific work
Direction 1
Some contracts for Kirov region committee of
nature protection were realized. Subjects were:
-the ecology examination of galvanic workshops
in Kirov;
- the creation of methods for computation of toxic
metals in solid and liquid wastes and for
computation of necessary in water consumption.
Supervisor of contracts is Shishkina S.V.
Two monographs were published (“The
methods for balance computation of heavy metals
in solid and liquid wastes of galvanic workshop”
and “The methods for computation of water
consumption standards in galvanic workshop”.
The authors are S.V. Shishkina, V. I. Mamaev, Yu.
P. Khranilov.
11. Directions of scientific work
Direction 2
Creation of the theoretical foundations of
mathematical modeling and computer
simulation, including new mathematical
models for problems of electrochemistry and
electrochemical technology.
Three software material considerations
for electroplating were developed and
registered in FIPS Russia. Program were
purchased and implemented by all
enterprises Kirov having galvanic
production. The results are also in place at
JSC "Electropribor", Cheboksary.
On this subject theses are defended:
- of Domrachev R.A. “Develop material
balances electroplating and arrangements to
reduce their consumption of materials and
environmental hazards”;
- of Firsova L.P. “Optimization of material
balance multiprocess galvanic line by
computer simulation mass flows”.
12. Directions of scientific work
Direction 3
A series of works commissioned by Kirov-Chepetsk chemical plant are
performed under the direction of S.V. Shishkina. The research is aimed at
identifying and addressing the causes of problems in the technology of production
of chlorine and alkali mercury cell method
(“The study of factors affecting sludge on
the bottom of the cell P-20M and
recommendations for reducing it”). Studies
to explore the use of advanced technologies
in production on KCKK are performed (for
example “The study of membrane
technology and methods for cleaning waste
water KChKhK and develop
recommendations for their practical use”).
13. Directions of scientific work
Direction 4
A comprehensive study of fundamental electrochemical properties of ion-
exchange membranes in solutions containing multiply-charged ions and complex set
of variable composition are performed. The
phenomenon of modification of membranes and
emergence of nanostructures with new transport and
catalytic properties are discovered and explored.
Membrane technologies for water and wastewater
treatment chemical plants with the return of valuable
components in the work cycle are developed.
The next Ph.D theses were defended under the
guidance of Prof. Shishkina S.V.: “Study of
electrodialysis of solutions containing heavy metals”
(Mihailova I.Yu.); “The electrochemical behavior of
ion-exchange membranes in solutions of transition
metal chlorides” (Pechenkina E.S.).
14. Directions of scientific work
Direction 5
Technologies for recycling of valuable components in the
processing of liquid and solid waste electroplating and other
industries are developed. There are: nickel recovery from spent
chemical nickel plating electrolytes; getting of lead chrome
pigment from spent technological solutions containing hexavalent
chromium; obtaining of high purity copper from copper-containing
salt residues.
The next Ph.D theses were defended under the guidance of Prof.
Khranilov Yu. P.:
- “The technology of nickel utilization from waste solutions of
chemical nickel plating and from recovery baths” (Lobanova L.L.);
- “The technology for producing of lead chrome pigment using
electroplating wastes” (Eremeeva T.V.);
- “The technology of copper extraction in a compact form from
concentrated copper salt wastes” (Bobrov M.N.).

Direction 6
Tribogalvanic technology of surface
treatment of metals are developed to give
special properties such as corrosion resistance,
wear resistance, decorative appearance. The
work manager is Ph.D. Mamaev V.I. Range of
colors, which can be painted products, is
expanded. Tribogalvanic technologies for
coating of different colors are developed, as
well as methods for rendering conventional
coatings for precious metals, under the "old
days."
16. The practical implementation of research
results
The results of scientific research have been implemented in real
production and cooperation with enterprises:
JSC "Kirov-Chepetsk Chemical Plant";
JSC "The appliance", Cheboksary;
OJSC "Avitek";
JSC "Lepse";
JSC "Mayak", etc.
Cooperation is possible with enterprises of energy, pharmaceuticals,
food processing industries in terms of water treatment and wastewater
treatment using membrane methods; with JSC "Cuprite" in terms of the
development and implementation of technologies for processing and
disposal of wastes containing toxic heavy metals.
