Introduction
Definition
• A substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and
distribution system. Substations transform voltage from high to low, or
the reverse, or perform any of several other important functions.
Importance of substation
Factors governing the selection of side
I. Frist you have choose a good place.
II. Its safety must be ensured - good maintenance arrangements,
replacement of any parts with problems, regular monitoring and
testing as per standards, safe from fire related problems and related
matters must be ensured.
III. It should be easy to operate and maintain and minimum cost should
be monitored.
Classification of Sub-Station
1. Service requirement.
2. On structural features.
1. Service requirement
Here the work is done mainly on voltage level more or less (step up and down),
power factor improvement, conversion from AC power to DC power.
➢Transformer substation.
➢Switching substation.
➢Power factor correction substation.
➢Converting substation.
➢Industrial substation.
➢Frequency changer substation.
Service requirement Classification
Transformer substation Switching substation Power factor correction substation
Converting substation Industrial substation Frequency changer substation
2. On structural features
A substation has may components which must be properly protected for
continuous and reliable service.
➢Indoor substation.
➢Outdoor substation.
➢Underground substation.
➢Pole mounted substation.
On structural features Classification
Indoor substation Outdoor substation
Underground substation Pole mounted substation
Elements of a substation
➢ Busbar
➢ ACR (Automatic Re-closer)
➢ Isolator
➢ PT (Potential Transformer)
➢ CT (Current Transformer)
➢ VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker)
➢ Transformer
➢ Insulator
➢ Lightning Arrester
➢ PFI (Power Factor Improvement)

Other elements of a substation
•Operation of substation
• Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or
perform any of several other important functions. Between the
generating station and consumer, electric power may flow through
several substations at different voltage levels.

Hazards
➢Electrical hazards.
➢Mechanical hazards.
➢Hazards from toxic materials.
➢Dealing with fire hazards.
➢Hot surfaces/liquids/gases.
➢Handling of cold liquids.
➢Handling of corrosive liquids.
➢Handling of explosive gases.
➢Temperature hazards.
