The Einsatzgruppen were mobile Nazi killing squads composed of SS soldiers. They traveled through Germany, Poland, and the Soviet Union killing Jews, communists, and Romani people on Hitler's orders to eliminate them from Europe. The SS soldiers would line victims up and shoot them or gas them in trucks. Over time, the killings took a psychological toll on the SS members. The program was eventually terminated for this reason.
