4. Ancient Egypt history
For almost 30 centuries—from its unification around
3100 B.C. to its conquest by Alexander the Great in 332
B.C.—ancient Egypt was the preeminent civilization in
the Mediterranean world. From the great pyramids of
the Old Kingdom through the military conquests of
the New Kingdom, Egypt’s majesty has long entranced
archaeologists and historians and created a vibrant
field of study all its own: Egyptology. The main sources
of information about ancient Egypt are the many
monuments, objects and artifacts that have been
recovered from archaeological sites, covered with
hieroglyphs that have only recently been deciphered.
The picture that emerges is of a culture with few
equals in the beauty of its art, the accomplishment of
its architecture or the richness of its religious
traditions.

The state religion of Egypt is Islam. Although estimates

Coptic Christianity
Its an ethnoreligious group indigenous to North Africa who
primarily inhabit the area of modern Egypt, where they are
the largest Christian denomination in the country. Copts
are also the largest Christian denomination in Sudan and
Libya. Historically, they spoke the Coptic language, a direct
descendant of the Demotic Egyptian that was spoken in
late antiquity.

musicians. They brought music to their religious ceremonies,
but it was also played and performed in workshops, palaces,
the farms, on the battlefield and even in their tombs.
Modern Egypt
Egyptian modern music is considered as a main core of
Middle Eastern and Oriental music as it has a very big
influence on the region due to the popularity and huge
influence of Egyptian Cinema and Music industries. The
tonal structure of Oriental Middle Eastern music is defined
by the maqamat, loosely similar to the Western modes,
while the rhythm of Middle Eastern music is governed by
the iqa'at, standard rhythmic modes formed by
combinations of accented and unaccented beats and rests.

Coptic art is the Christian art of the and of Coptic Christian Churches. Coptic art is
best known for its wall-paintings, textiles, illuminated manuscripts, and metalwork,
much of which survives in monasteries and churches. The artwork is often functional, as
little distinction was drawn between artistry and craftsmanship, and includes tunics
and tombstones as well as portraits of saints. The Coptic Museum in Coptic Cairo

1) Most Ancient Egyptian pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs (rulers of Ancient Egypt) and their families. To date, over 130 pyramids have been
discovered in Egypt.
2) The afterlife was incredibly important to the Egyptians. They believed that by preserving a dead person’s body – which they did through the process
of mummification – their soul would live on in the after-life forever.
3) The Pyramid of Khufu at Giza is the largest Egyptian pyramid. This incredible structure weighs as much as 16 Empire State buildings!
4) Both Egyptian men and women wore makeup. The eye-paint was usually green (made from copper) or black (made from lead). As well as offering
protection from the sun, the Egyptians believed make-up had magical healing powers, too!
5) Unwrapped, the bandages of an Ancient Egyptian mummy could stretch for 1.6km. Yikes!
