Egg Osmosis
Experiment
Shera Andulan 8-16
Purpose
           • To observe osmosis in a cell.

          1. Place eggs in vinegar to
               remove the shell.
          2. Measure weight of the egg
               using a balance.
          3. Measure the size of the egg
               using string and measuring
               tape.
          4. Place one egg in corn
syrup, place the other egg in
               water.
          5. Weigh and measure the eggs
               again
Hypothesis
             • Corn Syrup Egg
             • I think it will get
               bigger, heavier and look
               larger
             • Water Egg
             • I think that it the
               weight, size and
               appearance will stay the
               same
Materials
            • Eggs
            • Balance
            • Measuring tape & string
            • Corn syrup
            • Water
            • Two beakers
            • Vinegar
Observations
                                     1. There are bubbles rising
Before After from the egg to the top of
                                          the vinegar
                                     2. There are more bubbles at
Corn Syrup W. 67g W. 44
the top and the egg is
             S. 16.1cm S. 13.2cm
                                          floating
                                     3. Eggs are still floating and
foam is forming at the top
H2O W. 77.4g W. 91.9 4. After sitting in corn syrup
             S. 16cm S. 17.5cm overnight, it looks
                                          shrivelled up.
                                     5. After sitting in water
                                          overnight, the egg sunk
                                          and became larger.
Conclusion
             • Water moved into the
                 water egg making it
                 larger
             • The egg had a lower
                 concentration of water
                 than the water
             • Water moved out of the
                 corn syrup egg making it
                 smaller
             • The egg had a higher
                 concentration
Conclusion
             • My hypothesis for the water egg
             was wrong
              • Weight: I thought that the weight
would stay the same but it got
                larger
              • Size: I thought that the size would
stay the same but it increased
              • Appearance: I thought that it
would look the same but it
                appeared bigger
Conclusion
              • My hypothesis for the corn
                syrup egg was wrong
             • Weight: I thought that the
                 weight would increase but
                 it decreased
             • Size: I thought that the
size would get larger but it
                 ended up getting smaller
             • Appearance: I thought that
                 egg would appear larger
                 but it shrivelled up
