Held on 11 March 2015 during Masterclass "Towards open educational processes and practices"
http://portal.ou.nl/en/web/masterclass-ow-050216/introduction/-/wiki/Main/Programme
Presentation of discussion panel during EMOOCs2016 conference on latest survey HOME project compared to other research. Several independent studies have been conducted about why institutions are investing in MOOCs and open education. During this discussion session, the results of some recent studies are presented. The data suggest significant differences between US and Europe and even between European countries. This difference will be discussed and in addition the possible implications for a (collective) European answer.

Teaching research skills through gamificationBenjamin Walsh
Abstract: Faculty teaching first-year courses must not only teach students about subject matter, they must also help students understand how to locate, evaluate, and use scholarly information. And this can be a challenging task. First-year students often have difficulty navigating both digital and physical library spaces (Salisbury & Karasmanis, 2011). This can be especially true at the University of Toronto, where a complex network of libraries encompassing print and digital collections can compound anxiety around the navigation of the scholarly information environment (University of Toronto Libraries, 2018).
This talk will discuss a new educational partnership between Robarts, the University’s Humanities and Social Sciences library, and Woodsworth One (WDW One), a program for first‐year students in the Social Sciences and Humanities. As we describe Woodsworth One’s interest in problem-based learning (Walker et al., 2015), we will explain how a new relationship was built with Robarts Library, and ways in which a Robarts “escape game” was used to help ensure WDW One students would develop fundamental research skills as they explored scholarly information space (Walsh, 2014) and built “cognitive maps” (Afrooz et al., 2018) that will help them navigate these spaces in the future.

Following the needs of today’s society and the development and needs of learners, the project E-competent teacher within E-Education defines and describes the digital competencies or e-competencies that represent the basic level of digital literacy. They refer to teachers, pre-school teachers, ICT co-ordinators, school principals and deputy school principals. Our seminars mostly focus on the first level of digital literacy since they support the development of digital competencies. Partly, the second level is also included because the blended learning seminars enable participants to put into practice the knowledge they gain on various strategies, approaches, content and materials. By doing so, they apply the acquired competencies to their professional field. The results of the evaluation we have already done show that since 2009 there were 36.574 participations at the seminars (20.296 participants out of 30.000 teachers in Slovenia), 14.920 workshops with 39.073 participations, more than 70% of principals attended 1 or more leadership courses 99,3% schools were participating in the project, 285 members of development teams and 760 trained collaborators were involved in the project.

For the past 14 years, the Speak Up Research Project has collected and reported on the views of 4.5 million K-12 students, educators and parents regarding digital learning. Using current and longitudinal Speak Up data, we will provide new insights into the use of games, mobile devices and digital content within learning, and counter mythology with the authentic views of students, teachers and parents regarding technology use within instruction. Going beyond anecdotes and assumptions, this interactive and eye-opening presentation will provide leaders with new metrics for evaluating the pulse of elearning in their school or district.
"We’re at the point where the Internet pretty much supplies everything we need. We don’t really need teachers in the same way anymore" (Godsey, 2015). Information is no longer in the hands of the select few. Learners are finally independent of the teacher and school – or are they? What will they do with the information? How will it be possible to assess learning?

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.
