Educational system in Denmark consists of: 1. Primary and secondary schools, with primary for ages 6-16 and secondary for ages 16-18 or 19. 2. Secondary schools have lessons that last 45 minutes, a 5 day school week, and approximately 30 hours of lessons per week over a 40 week school year with 6 weeks of summer holiday and other breaks throughout the year totaling 200 school days. 3. Students study mandatory subjects like Danish, math, and science as well as optional subjects. National exams are taken at the end of 9th grade in core subjects and students must pass to advance to further education.

2. Secondary school
A lesson lasts minutes. A school week last s days and pupils work hours per week (
lessons). A school year lasts weeks and there are weeks of holidays: (describe when the
holidays are and how long): Summer holidays: 6 weeks, Autumn holiday: 1 week, Christmas 1½‐2 weeks, Winter
holiday: 1 week, Easter holiday: 1 week; other holidays: 5 days throughout the year. In other words: There are 200
school days in a year.

grade 8.‐9. also social studies and religious studies.
● Optional ‐ at our school: Swimming, mountainbike, science, English on a higher level, French, music, IT,

2. What happens at the end of the year if a student :
‐ has poor results? Nothing, but the whole time we try to make the students better, so we talk a lot about this
with the students and the parents. For us, the important things is that the students learn as much as they can ‐
and that differs.
‐ fails exams? In the “Folkeskole” you can’t really fail an exam, but from the summer 2015 the students who
wanted to go to a vocational school had to have at least 2 in Danish and math. If they didn’t they had to do a
summer course, but we do as much as we can to prevent this. Students who want to go to high School and don’t
have good enough grades can do a test to enter high school anyway or we suggest them to do a 10. grade in order
to become better.

5. Management and Teachers
On what level are schools managed? Both at a school, a local community and at a national level.
To become a teacher you need to study at least years and pass a certification called

and work (teaching + preparation time) hours a week.
To get a position in a school, teachers must : Apply for the position, go to an interview at the school and do well at
this interview. And have good grades.
6. Special needs
Are special needs children integrated into regular classes? Yes many are. Some with very special needs go
to special schools.
Are trained teachers in charge of SN Students? Both yes and no. The normal teachers and the trained teachers
cooperate about the integrated students.
