The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the National Education Policy 2020 today, making way for large scale, transformational reforms in both school and higher education sectors. This is the first education policy of the 21st century and replaces the thirty-four year old National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986. Built on the foundational pillars of Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability, this policy is aligned to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and aims to transform India into a vibrant knowledge society and global knowledge superpower by making both school and college education more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, suited to 21st century needs and aimed at bringing out the unique capabilities of each student.

4. 1. Allocation of amount worth Rs 9975 crore for National Social
Assistance Programme this year .
2. Treat education holistically without segmentation from pre-
nursery to Class 12 .
3. To improve the quality of teachers and education , the Govt.
will initiate an integrated B. Ed. programme for the teachers .
4. Increase the digital intensity in education and move gradually
from ‘blackboard to ‘digital board’
5. 5. Technology will be used to upgrade the skills of teachers
through the recently launched digital portal ‘DIKSHA’
6. By the year 2020 , every block with more than 50% ST
population & at least 20,000 tribal people there will be
‘Ekalavya Model Residential School’ to provide best quality
education to tribal children in their own environment.
7. Ekalavya schools will be on par with Navodaya Vidayalas
having special facilities for preserving local art & culture
besides training in sports and skill development .
6. 8. Launch a major initiative named ‘ Revitalizing Infrastructure
and Systems in Education’ (RISE ) by 2022 with a total
investment of Rs 1,00,000 crore in next four years . Higher
Education Financing Agency (HEFA) would be suitably
structured for funding this initiative .
9. Planning to set up a special Railway university at Vadodara.
10.Proposed to set up 2 new full-fledged schools of Planning and
Architecture to be selected on challenge mode .
7. 11. Launching the ‘ Prime Minister’s Research Fellows (
PMRF) Scheme this year .
Under the scheme Govt. will identify 1,000 best B.Tech
students each year from premier institutions and provide them
facilities to do Ph.D in IITs and IISc..with a handsome
fellowship . It is expected that that these bright students will
voluntarily commit few hours every week for teaching in
higher educational institutions .
