QUESTION
Creative and critical thinking
depends on an individual learner
and his or her attitude. Discuss
the mode of identification of
creative individual according to
your own understanding.
Introduction
A creative individual is a person whose
creative works show sensitivity and
imagination. Creative individuals are
remarkable for their ability to adapt to
almost any situation and to make
whatever is at hand to reach their goals.
Creativity is a central source of meaning
in our lives. Most of the things that are
interesting, important, and human are the
result of creativity.
“What makes us different from apes
that is our language, values, artistic
expression, scientific understanding,
and technology is the result of
individual originality that was
recognized, rewarded, and
transmitted through learning” (
Mihaly, 1996). Creative thinking and
critical thinking are complementary
and equally important.
They need to work together in harmony to
address perceived opportunities and challenges
or concerns. As creative thinking involves
searching for meaningful new connections by
generating many original and varied possibilities.
On the other hand critical thinking involves
examining the possibilities carefully, fairly and
constructively and focusing on the prioritized
options. Effective problem solvers must think
both creatively and critically, generating options
and focusing their thinking. In order to identify
creative individuals, the following traits are
considered.
Creative individuals tend to be
energetic yet also quite sedentary.
Creative individuals have a lot of
energy or a huge appetite for their
work and maximum concentration
and focus when working on a
project. Yet they also greatly enjoy
leisure rest and relaxing ways to
recharge their minds. (Cropley,
2001).
Need for originality. They resist rules and
conventions having a rebellion attitude
because of a need to do things no one else
can do. Creative individuals are imaginative,
their imaginations take them to places at
which first seems very strange or unusual or
bizarre to others, which create newness that
sooner or later other individual recognize as
being true. According to Walker, (2009),
“creative individuals with original ideas must
be nurtured, for they enable us to adapt
intelligently to changing conditions.”
Flexibility. Creative individuals have the ability to see
different aspects of issues and come up with optimal
solutions. Flexibility is a bit like fluency in that we are
working with ideas, but while fluency is about generating
as many ideas as possible, flexibility is about generating
ideas that are different from each other. Thinking flexibly
is a valuable skill because it allows you to get out of
thinking rut in order to come up with a new idea. For
example, if you were generating a list of different uses of
water, washing dishes, washing clothes, brushing teeth,
would all fall into one category, while generating hydro
power would fall into a different one.
Are willing to take risks, are often people
who are described as “high risk takers, or
adventurous, or speculative.” Most creative
people are fearless as they tend to
accomplish their needs.
Creative people display a great deal of
curiosity about many things; are constantly
asking questions about anything and
everything; may have broad interests in
many unrelated areas. May devise collections
based on unusual things and interests.
Creative people are humble and proud at
the same time. It is remarkable to meet a
famous person who you expect to be
arrogant, only to encounter self deprecation
and shyness instead. Yet there are good
reasons why this should be so. These
individuals are well aware that they stand, in
Newton’s words, “on the shoulders of
giants”. Their respect for the area in which
their work makes them aware of the long
line of previous contributions to it, putting
their own perspective.
They are always focused on future
projects and current challenges than
past accomplishments, no matter how
outstanding, are no longer very
interesting to them. At the same time,
they know that in comparison with
others, they accomplished a great deal.
And this knowledge provides a sense of
security, even pride (Mihaly, 1996).
Creative people are very passionate
about their work, yet they can be
extremely objective about it as well.
Without the passion, we soon lose
interest in a difficult task. Yet without
being objective about it, our work is not
very good and lacks credibility. Creative
people have the spirit of tolerating and
they are full motivated with ambitions
Finally, although some of these traits
sound positive (motivation) or neutral
(associative orientation), others are
noticed less appearing. Creative people
are not always equally practical and
performance oriented. They differ from
one another exhibiting different
characteristics.

Edu 103 presentation

  • 1. WELCOME CLASS, THIS IS GROUP NUMBER 2 PRESENTATION FROM PC
  • 2. QUESTION Creative and critical thinking depends on an individual learner and his or her attitude. Discuss the mode of identification of creative individual according to your own understanding.
  • 3. Introduction A creative individual is a person whose creative works show sensitivity and imagination. Creative individuals are remarkable for their ability to adapt to almost any situation and to make whatever is at hand to reach their goals. Creativity is a central source of meaning in our lives. Most of the things that are interesting, important, and human are the result of creativity.
  • 4. “What makes us different from apes that is our language, values, artistic expression, scientific understanding, and technology is the result of individual originality that was recognized, rewarded, and transmitted through learning” ( Mihaly, 1996). Creative thinking and critical thinking are complementary and equally important.
  • 5. They need to work together in harmony to address perceived opportunities and challenges or concerns. As creative thinking involves searching for meaningful new connections by generating many original and varied possibilities. On the other hand critical thinking involves examining the possibilities carefully, fairly and constructively and focusing on the prioritized options. Effective problem solvers must think both creatively and critically, generating options and focusing their thinking. In order to identify creative individuals, the following traits are considered.
  • 6. Creative individuals tend to be energetic yet also quite sedentary. Creative individuals have a lot of energy or a huge appetite for their work and maximum concentration and focus when working on a project. Yet they also greatly enjoy leisure rest and relaxing ways to recharge their minds. (Cropley, 2001).
  • 7. Need for originality. They resist rules and conventions having a rebellion attitude because of a need to do things no one else can do. Creative individuals are imaginative, their imaginations take them to places at which first seems very strange or unusual or bizarre to others, which create newness that sooner or later other individual recognize as being true. According to Walker, (2009), “creative individuals with original ideas must be nurtured, for they enable us to adapt intelligently to changing conditions.”
  • 8. Flexibility. Creative individuals have the ability to see different aspects of issues and come up with optimal solutions. Flexibility is a bit like fluency in that we are working with ideas, but while fluency is about generating as many ideas as possible, flexibility is about generating ideas that are different from each other. Thinking flexibly is a valuable skill because it allows you to get out of thinking rut in order to come up with a new idea. For example, if you were generating a list of different uses of water, washing dishes, washing clothes, brushing teeth, would all fall into one category, while generating hydro power would fall into a different one.
  • 9. Are willing to take risks, are often people who are described as “high risk takers, or adventurous, or speculative.” Most creative people are fearless as they tend to accomplish their needs. Creative people display a great deal of curiosity about many things; are constantly asking questions about anything and everything; may have broad interests in many unrelated areas. May devise collections based on unusual things and interests.
  • 10. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time. It is remarkable to meet a famous person who you expect to be arrogant, only to encounter self deprecation and shyness instead. Yet there are good reasons why this should be so. These individuals are well aware that they stand, in Newton’s words, “on the shoulders of giants”. Their respect for the area in which their work makes them aware of the long line of previous contributions to it, putting their own perspective.
  • 11. They are always focused on future projects and current challenges than past accomplishments, no matter how outstanding, are no longer very interesting to them. At the same time, they know that in comparison with others, they accomplished a great deal. And this knowledge provides a sense of security, even pride (Mihaly, 1996).
  • 12. Creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well. Without the passion, we soon lose interest in a difficult task. Yet without being objective about it, our work is not very good and lacks credibility. Creative people have the spirit of tolerating and they are full motivated with ambitions
  • 13. Finally, although some of these traits sound positive (motivation) or neutral (associative orientation), others are noticed less appearing. Creative people are not always equally practical and performance oriented. They differ from one another exhibiting different characteristics.
