EDITING PROCESS
Film Magazine
Step 1
• Firstly, we had to find the correct image for our film
magazine. We had to ensure that the image was
appealing to the eye in order to engage an audience.
Therefore, it was necessary that there had to be a link
between the teaser trailer and the ancillary products
(magazine). It was important that we included
‘EXCLUSIVES’ and chances to ‘WIN’ as this another way
of attracting an audience. We were also considering
using some behind the scenes shots so that the
audience feel as of they are getting something extra,
this should hopefully target a different audience
demographic. To ensure that there was synergy
between the trailer and the ancillary products, we have
ensured that the same font style and font colour is used.
• We believe that the image
above is the correct one to
use as it establishes the type
of protagonist via the use of
signs. The character is also
looking directly at the
camera which creates a
connection between him and
the audience.
Step 2
• The image background does not look
professional and would not bode well on the
magazine front cover. We therefore edited it
out using the quick selection tool in
Photoshop. This was then moved to a
separate document and the image was
enlarged and positioned in the centre. To
sharpen the image up, a gradient was added
via the gradient tool. The radial gradient was
also used in order to make it seem as if light
is coming from behind the subject. This
added to him dominance. The page size is
21cm x 29.7cm as this is the convention for
magazine covers.
• The clone stamp tool was
used to remove the black
mark on Reiss’ glove.This
helped the image to look
cleaner and therefore
would improve the overall
effect of the film magazine.
Step 3
• The next step was to insert the masthead which is 120 pt. in
size and is ‘Rockwell Extra Bold’. We chose the size and font to
be this as it is essential for the masthead to be bold with
minimal spacing as this looks more professional. We used
white as the colour as it bodes well with the dark coloured
background. We also added some smaller text saying ‘Your’ on
the masthead as we took inspiration fromTotal Film.
• A slogan was also added to the top of the masthead as there
was a lot of empty space at the top of the magazine cover. We
used ‘Myriad Pro’ for the font and the size was 16pt simply
because we didn’t want it to be too big. In addition to this, we
added the magazine website in the right hand corner of the
masthead. This was because it looked professional and the
black font stands out on the page.
Step 4
• The main cover line was “12 Rounds With Life” as this
created a direct link between the trailer, poster and
magazine. We have used ‘Copperplate Gothic Bold’
as this font was used in both the poster and the
trailer. The colours used are quite basic as we stuck to
a white, grey, black and red colour scheme. These
colours all bode well together and it creates synergy
through all the products as these colours have been
used throughout. A quote has been added to the
magazine as this gives the audience a hint as to what
the protagonist is like. As well as this, a ‘Sneak
Preview’ section has been added as this entices the
audience.
Step 5
• A plug in was then added to the front cover
as this is a typical convention of magazines.
It also attracts the audience via the use od
language such as ‘WIN’. The plug in
involved a few steps, the first one was to
use the ellipse tool to create the circle. The
paint bucket tool was then used to make
the circle conform to the colour scheme of
the front cover. We then used the text tool
to add the text to the puff. This created a
unique selling point to our magazine as this
will draw in the audiences attention to the
product.
Step 6
• To conform to the conventions of
magazines, we added a barcode to the
front cover. This is obviously essential
if the magazine is going to be sold in
shops. This was an image that was
taken from the internet as it included
the date and the codes so therefore no
editing was needed. A scan code has
also been added which allows the
audience to find out more about the
film. This can create more of a buzz
about the film as it will widen peoples
knowledge.
Step 7
• To ensure the reader has a few extra bonuses we
added things such as ‘EXTRA’, ‘FEATURING’ and
behind the scenes. The style of this is related to a
film reel as it emphasises that this is a film
magazine. This was placed diagonally which
challenges conventions as this isn’t usually seen
on magazines. We also added another feature
which entices viewers to buy the magazine as it
indicates to them that they will be receiving a
bonus.
