This document discusses edge detection and edge linking algorithms. It notes that edge detection identifies pixels on edges but not full edges due to noise. Edge linking then assembles these edge pixels into meaningful edges and boundaries. There are three fundamental approaches to edge linking: local processing which analyzes each pixel's strength and direction, regional processing which links pixels based on regional membership, and requiring specification of starting points and ordering of points to form connected paths for regional boundary approximation.
