Earthquakes occur when tectonic plates suddenly shift, releasing stored elastic strain energy and creating seismic waves. There are several types of faults that can cause earthquakes. To prepare, secure heavy objects, maintain emergency supplies, identify safe spots away from windows or tall furniture, and develop evacuation plans. During shaking, drop and cover inside until it stops, then check for injuries and gas leaks after. Listen to officials for information on damaged areas to avoid after an earthquake.

3. Tectonic earthquakes will occur anywhere within the earth where there is sufficient stored elastic strain energy to drive fracture propagation along a fault plane.

4. Earthquakes are caused by faulting, a sudden lateral or vertical movement of rock along a rupture (break) surface.

6. Store breakable and heavy objects on lower shelves. Also, use latches on cabinet doors.

7. Maintain emergency food, water, medicine, a first aid kit, tools and clothing for earthquake aftermath.

8. Secure heavy furnishings.

10. Eliminate all nonstructural hazards.

11. Classroom hazards would include heavy objects placed above head level or bookcases that are not bolted to the wall.

12. Develop a safe place plan in the classroom. Review areas in the classroom that will provide added shelter from falling debris, such as under furniture, in an interior corner or an interior hallway.

14. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.

15. Be aware that the electricity may go or fire alarms may turn on.

16. Most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.

17. Remain calm - do not panic!

19. Open cabinets cautiously. Beware of objects that can fall off shelves.

20. Stay away from damaged areas.

21. Remember to help your neighbors who may require special help such as infants, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Give first aid where appropriate.

22. Clean up spilled medicines, bleaches, gasoline or other flammable liquids immediately.

23. Inspect utilities.

25. Stay out of damaged buildings.

26. Be careful around broken glass and debris.

27. Follow the emergency plan or the instructions of the person in charge.

28. Check for the smell of gas. If you smell it, open all the windows and doors, leave immediately.

29. Use the telephone for emergency calls.
