Enron Corporation was an American energy company based in Houston, Texas that filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Enron grew rapidly in the 1990s through acquisitions and trading but its profits were based on accounting fraud and dubious partnerships. As losses mounted in 2001 from failed ventures and investigations began, CEO Jeffrey Skilling resigned before the company collapsed, wiping out the pensions and jobs of thousands of employees.
