Comments: Strengths The program is a fantastic modern use of technology to provide students an opportunity to recover where they failed during the year. The program appeared to be well organized. This allows students to learn via the internet and become more independent. Convenient to use and located at my students school I did like the fact that the students could work from home. I also liked that I could get online and check his work and resubmit if need be. The program was well paced. Allowed me (a working parent) the ability to keep an eye on his work habits and not slack off. It was helpful to us because my child had a summer job and could do both each day. I thought the online experience really showed me as a student how hard it is to teach yourself. I learned the right way to teach myself and enjoyed trying to figure things out.
Comments: Improvements I think that it would be more helpful if the in school time also allowed for interaction in person with the teacher. Separate labs by subject area. There should be more face to face contact with the teachers especially with the younger students. Have the assignments open earlier than 7:30pm the night before. As a working parent, it would have been easier to have him start earlier in the evening. Could be offered all through the summer, not just a certain time, for instance have multiple start dates. Then the teachers could grade in a staggered manner. Thoroughly check that everything works properly. I had many technical difficulties. More communication
Recommendations …. Provide a more comprehensive orientation that addresses technology issues and helps parents identify potential technology issues prior to implementation. Change lab monitor role to include assisting with course work and tutoring struggling students. Establish communication lines such as tested emails with the students and the parents that are reliable prior to course start date. Provide opportunities for teacher and student to meet at school. Be better prepared to deal with the lack of motivation on the side of typical academically failing students.

Editor's Notes

  • #10 Survey responders were asked to decide whether they agree or disagreed with the statements. The % of responders indicates the percentage of survey responders who strongly agree or agree with the statement. The statements are listed below. Statement 1: I was able to navigate the course and open documents/resources easily. Statement 2: I found the assignments easy to read and understand. Statement 3: I found the directions provided to be clear and concise. Statement 4: I understood how to submit work. Statement 5: I found the discussion boards and chats easy to participate in. Statement 6: I understood the testing and review process for my course. Some additional comments are below: I liked it a lot. Was not able to look at old notes or work and no review process till the final week. Students need to be able to look at past work. There were times that my student was unable to open quizzes and this made us both nervous that the work would not be done in a timely fashion.
  • #11 Survey responders were asked to decide whether they agree or disagreed with the statements. The % of responders indicates the percentage of survey responders who strongly agree or agree with the statement. The statements are listed below. Statement 1: The course content was presented in a way that was easy to understand. Statement 2: The Power Points were helpful in understanding course content. Statement 3: The videos were helpful in understanding course content. Statement 4: The podcasts were helpful in understanding course content. Statement 5: The Internet resources were helpful in understanding course content. Statement 6: Sufficient review materials were provided to prepare for tests. Statement 7: The assignments/projects strengthened my understanding of the course content. Some additional comments: Videos did not always work. I think that Math is a very difficult subject to teach online. My student needs to see the work done by the teacher to understand the material and then she doesn’t have a problem.
  • #12 Survey responders were asked to decide whether they agree or disagreed with the statements. The % of responders indicates the percentage of survey responders who strongly agree or agree with the statement. The statements are listed below. Statement 1: The teacher answered my child’s questions in a timely manner. Statement 2: The school answered my emails and phone calls in a timely manner. Statement 3: The teacher and/or school communicated grades to me weekly. Statement 4: If I was not completing assignments, I was notified. Statement 5: I found email and moodle to be a helpful communication tool. Some additional comments: Parents should be notified weekly on their child’s progress. The child’s accurate grade should be reported to the parent not just a notification that it is falling below a certain percentage. That would include high and low grades. Most parents are paying for this. I e-mailed my child’s teacher daily and she was very kind to e-mail me back. I was pleased with the communication we had with each other
