1) New generations of geostationary internet satellites are being developed that can provide up to 1 terabit per second of capacity through high throughput Ka-band beams and flexible payloads. 2) Constellations of low Earth orbit satellites complement geostationary satellite internet by providing low latency backhauling for terrestrial networks and global coverage for IoT/M2M applications. 3) Internet satellites can accelerate deployment of communication services globally and provide backup in emergencies, working as a natural complement to fiber and 4G networks to provide broadband access everywhere.

5. A new generation of Geostationary Internet Satellites :
• Bus :
 New generation, optimized for all electric propulsion, with payloads ranging from 400
kg to 3 t, 7 kW to 25 kW, accommodation of more/larger reflectors
• Payload :
 Hundreds of beams, wide band (up to 2.5 GHz) and high power Ka-band throughput
providing 350 Gbps - up to 1 Tbps of capacity around 2020, with introduction of
flexibility
 Feeder link in Q-V band, with progressive introduction of active antennas
An enriched and diversifying space offering with constellations :
• For Broadband Internet : complementary to GEO offering
 Oneweb/Leosat – tens/hundreds of LEO (2000 km) satellites (200-1000 kg) providing low
latency backhauling for connecting terrestrial base stations or large mobile platforms –

• By co-funding R & D required for innovation, States help industry master innovative
technologies and design the requested solutions : the European industry can design any
category of Internet satellite.
• Orders of Internet satellites by commercial operators to respond to their strategy and
market needs confirm the European industry know how and competitiveness
• Recent orders to the European industry include some covering the North Pacific, Central
Asia, Africa or the Americas… what about Europe?
• The need seems to exist : in France alone, much more than 1 million poorly served rural or
isolated HH could get a BB (> 30 Mbps) connection by satellite for 30-40 euros a month
from satellites fully funded by private operators…
• But in theses rural or isolated areas targeted by satellite, terrestrial networks are deployed
with public support, which create a complex situation : one more area of the “broadband
for all equation” where additional public guidance may be necessary?
