History of the Dual Language Program Established SY 2003-2004 in response to changing demographic of school population. Dual-Language model chosen to provide same benefits to both language groups: the opportunity to learn a second language. Began with Pre-K in 2003 and added a grade each year. Currently being implemented in Headstart thru Grade 4. Next year we will serve Pre-K to 5 th  grade.
Dual Language Program Students are split into two groups of dual language students and one English-only strand.
The Dual Language students spend half of their day learning in one classroom in English…
…  and the other half of their day learning in Spanish.
Who Teaches What? Students receive  reading and social studies/science instruction  from one teacher in English or Spanish and  mathematics and writing   instruction  from the other teacher in the other language.  The teachers switch  instructional subjects  every 5-6 weeks.
How long are class periods? About 2 hours and 15 minutes/ teacher Math:  about 1 hour  Writing:  about 1 hour  Reading:  about 1.5-2 hours  Science/Social Studies:  ~30-45 min Specials:  45-50 minutes daily for Art, Science, Library, Physical Education, or Music
Benefits of Dual Language Research shows that students will: score higher on standardized tests after at least 3 years in the program. come from diverse backgrounds learning to appreciate a culture different from their own. learn a second language at an early age achieving native-like fluency.  acquire gains in higher order thinking skills. have the advantage of being fully prepared for the global community and workforce.
