1. Dual Immersion On The
Rise In California

Proposition 227 may have banned bilingual education in California in 1998, but it
didn’t end bilingual learning. Far from it, the law and others like it actually helped
paved the way for another form called dual immersion to gain prominence.
Dual immersion is an
old old idea, but has
just become popular in
the last twenty to thirty
years. First introduced
in the United States in
1962, dual immersion
is an educational form
through which
students are taught in
two different language
at once, in a ratio. For a long time, non-English-speaking students in public
school were separated from their English-speaking counterparts and provided
language support in isolation. With dual immersion, all students in a classroom
are taught content and literacy in English as well as a target language–usually
Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. As the program
continues, the ratio of English to target language may change or stay the same,
depending on the goal of the school district. As of today, 422 schools in 227
school districts around the country have this type of program.
Leading the pack is California, with 133 schools in 80 different school districts.
The Glendale Unified School District in the Los Angeles metro area now offers a
total of seven languages (Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese,
Armenian, and Korean) to their 2,150 kids, and hopes every student will be
bilingual and bi-literate by the time they’re done with primary school. Other
2. districts in the area and around the country are taking notice and asking advice in
order to create their own versions of the program.
This is a wonderful new trend in elementary school education, and hopefully it
continues to expand outward and upward to middles and high schools
nationwide. Because not only should non-English students be able to keep their
language and history in school, but English-speaking students should be
encouraged to learn about other cultures different from their own.
