 Lead-acid batteries are now widely used as storage
elements
 It maintains the power balance between generation and
consumption.
 Comparison of three types are explained in this paper.
 The DBESS configuration significantly increases the
life of the Battery, reducing the operating and
maintenance costs of isolated systems by more than
19%.
 At initial sizing, battery banks can participate
approximately with up to 52% of the total system
investment
EXAMPLE:
 In Brazil, battery manufacturers have provided lead
acid batteries designed for PV applications, with a
projected useful life of 4 to 5 years. However, in
practice, these values have not exceeded 2 years. In this
context, it is important to invest efforts on research to
solve this problem.
 To increase the lifespan and the state of charge (SOC)
of battery.
 Reducing the operating and maintenance costs of
isolated systems
 To reduce power mismatch between generation and
load
 This method has charging and discharging in a short
period of time
 It prevents the bank from being fully charged leading to
the formation of lead sulphate.
EFFECTS:
 Consequent loss of useful life
 Low efficiency
 Leads to battery failure.
 We use diesel generator in addition to reduce the over
dependency of battery.
DRAWBACK:
 Increase in cost.
 HESS usually consists of a high-energy subsystem
(usually batteries) and a high-power subsystem (usually
super-capacitors).
 The high-energy subsystem is responsible for meeting
demand over long periods.
 The high-power subsystem is responsible for
absorbing transient oscillations in the power balance
between generation and demand
DRAWBACK: Cost
 Main bank : It is the bank of greater capacity, being
responsible for storing energy when the primary
renewable sources are available and to meet the load
demand when these are not available, or according to
an optimal dispatch.
 Secondary bank : It is a lower capacity bank used to
meet the needs of daily instantaneous balance and the
voltage regulation of the microgrid.
•The main bank is sized to meet
at least 90% of the power.
• The secondary bank should
account for up to 7.5% of the
remaining occurrences.
• The last 2.5% of the
remaining occurrences should
be complemented by the diesel
generator.
 The proposed strategy has preserved the useful life of
the whole storage system, especially the main bank,
which is the most expensive.
 This operational advantage brings the percentage of
investment of batteries to 33% of total investment.
