This randomized controlled trial examined the impact of supplementing a comprehensive early intervention program for toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with a curriculum targeting socially synchronous behaviors. Fifty toddlers with ASD between 21-33 months were assigned to either an Interpersonal Synchrony group or a Non-Interpersonal Synchrony group. The groups received identical interventions except the Interpersonal Synchrony group's intervention explicitly targeted socially engaged imitation, joint attention, and affect sharing. Results found a significant treatment effect for socially engaged imitation in the Interpersonal Synchrony group, with imitation skills maintained over time. Gains were also observed but not statistically significant for joint attention and shared positive affect.
