This study compared outcomes for 44 young children with autism who received either home-based Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) or autism-specific nursery provision for two years. Measures of IQ, language, play, adaptive behavior, and autism severity were taken initially and again 23-27 months later. Results found wide variation in progress among children, with most showing small to moderate improvements and no child mainstreaming without support. No significant differences were found between the two intervention groups. The study supports that no single intervention is superior and successful interventions may share common elements to help skills and lives.
