Technology Dbq
Why do you think we are advanced in technology today? It all started years ago, when the first
humans Adam and Eve were on earth and were capable of communicating with one another.
Than flash forward to 8,000 years ago, the first evidence of an alphabet was found from the
Phoenician around 1500 BCE. People started to write on papyrus and then they started to write on
scrolls. Monks started to write on books in a room known as a scriptorium. The scriptorium was
also known as a copying room. In 600 CE the Chinese introduced the woodblock printing. This was
difficult for the Chinese because they had to carve 50,000 characters on wood and eventually the
carve letters would wear out. A man named Johannes Gutenberg saw his chance to make something

To recap, the printing press was a phenomenal and a unique apparatus. It was constructed by a
goldsmith named Johannes Gutenberg. The printing press made the lives of everyone simple, it
was used for printing things. It was a big advancement during this time period. It was auspicious
and many famous people used it such as Martin Luther. Martin Luther used it because he was
disappointed with his church because they were selling indulgences. The printing press made it
possible for Luther to copy 95 theses and nail them in the front door. The 95 these were known all
through out, this would be impossible without the printing press to make the 95 Theses known
throughout Germany in two weeks and throughout Europe in a month. . Although one of the
consequences of the printing press was exploration, reformation was the most important because
the printing press made people more literate and created new believes. They had a better
understanding of the Bible and were able to tell if the pope was lying to them or not. This is why
the most important consequence of the printing press was

Case Study On Cross Border Merger And Acquisition
Cross border merger and acquisition become a fundamental characteristic of the global business
landscape. With the increasing significance of globalization in business sector, it is one of the
quickest ways to achieve the objective. This phenomenon is not only noticeable in the developed
country like American, Europe and Japan but also in the developing market like India. Since, 1991
the period of liberalization has influenced functioning of Indian corporate enterprise. This growing
trend towards cross border merger acquisition has raised new urgency to understand and manage the
taxconsequences of international expansion.
The global market for these transactions has been expanded very firstly beyond the regulatory each

Essay On Liver Cancer
For decades, liquid air, carbonic snow and iced saline solutions were used to destroy advance
malignancies for palliative purposes [5]. Now, there is a significantly increasing demand for novel,
minimally invasive treatments as the need for tumour detection rises. When surgery is not feasible,
other therapeutic alternatives including chemotherapy, thermal ablation, systemic therapies and
intra arterial interventions are used [6]. Unfortunately, no systemic therapy has been proven
effective. While chemotherapy and RFA have shown to relieve pain, decrease liver size and
improve liver function tests, it also affects the normal liver as well as tumorous tissues, limiting
their usefulness [5]. CA which is based on the non toxic nature of cold... Show more content on

It has been shown that the blood vessels of tumour are more sensitive to heat than normal
vasculature [8]. A study carried out by Zhao et al. demonstrated the heating effect of thermal
significant blood vessels in CA [9]. Further research has been done on the effects of large blood
vessels on the transient temperature field during CA for four different arrangements between
tumour and blood vessel [10]. Wang et al. in their study coupled the heat transfer and fluid flow
model established in a three dimensional space consisting of tumour, normal tissue and vascular
network [8] . This model was used to predict the effect of vascular network on IIF, tumour
destruction and thermal history during treatment. The numerical approaches to the
multidimensional freezing problem during CA may generally be divided to the finite difference
method (FDM) and the finite element method (FEM). A comparison done showed that FEM is
more suitable for irregular boundaries which is often the case for tumour tissues [9] . For
example, Zhang et al. generated a three dimensional model directly from the MRI images of a real
prostate which was analysed using FEM to predict heat transfer in prostate cancer CA [11].

Fashion s Influence On Fashion
When one thinks of a genre they think of a book or a type of music. Genre can be thought of as a
category of art. Fashion is a form of art, artists everyday are creating works that they feel people
will wear and like. Fashion is a huge industry with thousands of designers that makes billions of
dollars per year. Whether people realize it or not, every single person has a sense of style and has
their own taste in clothing. With fashionthere are different genres ranging from chic to bohemian
to sporty. Along with different genres of fashion, there are different genres of brands. With these
two genres combined, an examination of the correlation of the brands with the style of fashion
will be examined. The first genre of fashion we are going to examine is a style called chic . Chic
is a French word that means classy. When the word chic crosses my mind, I picture a girl
standing in the streets of New York City dressed up from head to toe looking her finest. Most
chic clothes cover the body of the person wearing them and makes them look a bit classier than
others. BB Dakota is a brand that is considered chic, it is on the lower of the scale of prices of
clothes. Most of their clothes have been seen in top boutiques and in department stores. Celebrities
such as Taylor Swift and others have been seen wearing this brand. It was first founded 30 years
ago in Southern California by a French designer. She limits the buyers of her clothing because she

Theme Of Female Oppression In La Casa De Bernarda Alba
FEMALE OPPRRESSION IN LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA
Katarina Milosevic
In this essay, female oppression in La Casa de Bernarda Alba will be discussed and analyzed.
However, in order to be able to understand the importance of this theme and the impact it has had on
the play, one must first understand the role of female oppression in the Spanish society in the 1930s.
The 1930s were a period of many changes in Spain, especially because Francisco Franco started
ruling the country and the political problems that arose. Things slowly started changing for
women because of the foundation of Mujeres Libres, a female anarchist organization that fought
for female rights. Until then, the general view of women was that of Proudhon, which meant
that women were to be seen as reproducers whose role was to contribute to the society by taking
care of their household and their children . This was especially common in the rural areas of
Spain, where women could even be forced into arranged marriages against their will and almost
had no say in what happened to them. The main oppressor of La Casa de Bernarda Alba is actually

growing threat of fascism and the first stages of the civil war in 1930s Spain.
At this point in the essay, it is clear that social norms and customs have contributed to oppressing
female characters in the play, but there is another element which has not been mentioned before and
it is religion. Religion, in this case Christianity, promotes chastity and discourages sex before
marriage. To keep her daughters pure , Bernarda does not allow them to have a boyfriend or to

My Hero
The most important day of my life was the day I lost my hero. He was about six feet tall with
brown hair, chocolate brown eyes, a wide smile and had a huge heart. He wasn t afraid of anything
and would take on the biggest tasks, even if he didn t want to. He would do anything for anyone,
especially his family. There was never a time where he said no. He loved to argue because, like
everyone else, he always had to be right. He was a hero. My hero. I was fortunate enough to call
this man my dad. October 24, 2016, is a day I will never forget. I rolled out of bed that Monday
morning from a long, lonely weekend. I had the house to myself and worked all weekend. My
parents were going to see the Kansas City Chiefs play the New Orleans Saints. My dad wore a
Seattle Seahawksjersey to the game because that s how much he d loved his team. The Seahawks
ended up tying with the Cardinals that day 6 6. I heard my parents walk into the house around
midnight. I slightly opened my eyes but fell asleep again. I woke up at 7:30 that morning,
brushed my teeth and got dressed for the day and was off to another day of senior year. As I was
walking out of the door, I noticed his car wasn t in the driveway. He must have had to work early,
I thought. He usually did. As I was walking to my car, I noticed how beautiful the lawn looked.

The Importance Of Artificial Stutrition And Hydration
I will argue that withdrawing artificial nutrition and hydration is not morally different from
withdrawing other types of life sustaining treatment. I will argue the opinion using the ethical
principle of beneficence, researching medical treatments of artificial nutrition and providing
example of life sustaining treatments that are equally in similar to artificial nutrition and hydration.
In the vignette of Ms. Conrad, I argue reasons for removing a Nasogastric Intubation (NG) to reduce
other medical complications that can occur, and the discomfort the tube could cause to the patient.
Life sustaining treatment refers to all treatments which have the potential to postpone a patient s
death. Examples of such treatments include those of mechanical ventilation, dialysis,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, antibiotics, and artificial nutrition and hydration. I believe that
withdrawing artificial nutrition is not morally different from other types of life sustaining
treatment. Artificial nutrition and hydration is a medical treatment that allows a person to receive
nutrients when they are unable to take them by themselves. The treatment is provided by medical
professionals through an intravenous administration or by methods of inserting a tube in the patient
s stomach. The reasons why this particular treatment is not morally different is because the
procedure is at inconvenience to the patient; not at the patient s comfort. Artificial nutrition and
hydration does not offer the

Madonna Long Neck
Sometimes in the art world using similar subjects can result in very different works. Such an
example of this is in the tale of the two Madonna s. The first Madonna is by the Italian High
Renaissance artist Raphael. This piece was completed by Raphael somewhere around 1505. This
piece is oil on panel and currently is on display at the national gallery of art in Washington D.C.
Nobody is positive why the piece was originally painted but at that time period it was common to
give this type of gift as a wedding present.
Madonna of the long neck is another work of art with the subject being Madonna. This piece of art

Stress And Heart Stress
Sometimes physical stress can contribute to having a heart attack. Doing intense physical activity
will make the hormone adrenaline is released during intense physical activity. There is also very
low blood levels of potassium or magnesium, major blood loss, and lack of oxygen. Also the
tendency to have arrhythmias run in some families and is passed through genes. An example of
this is long QT syndrome, which is a disorder of the hearts electrical activity. The problems with
tiny pores on the surface of heart muscle cells cause the disorder. Some people choose to drink too
much alcohol or smoke cigarettes to control their stress, but these habits can increase bloodpressure
and damage arterywalls. And your body s response to stress may be a headache, back strain, or
stomach pains. Stress can also strip your energy, mess up your sleep and make you feel cranky,
forgetful and out of control. A stressful situation will set off a chain of events. Your body
releases adrenaline, a hormone that temporarily causes your breathing and heart rate to speed up
and your blood pressure to rise. When stress is constant, your body remains in high gear off and
on for days or weeks at a time. Although the link between stress and heart disease isn t clear,
chronic stress may cause some people to drink too much alcohol which will increase your blood
pressure and damage the artery walls.
There are certain people are at certain risk for sudden cardiac arrest. The risk factor increases

How did Jackie Robinson Overcome Racial Discrimination in...
Have you ever been protested and demonstrated against? Jackie Robinson felt the outcry of
America during his baseball career. Fighting not only for his future, but also for the overall well
being of his sport, Robinson received death threats for his efforts. On a daily basis, this
disciplined African man fought the pressures of hatred toward his entire race. As a segregated
country, America saw major league baseball as a white man s sport. Robinson was the outlier in
an otherwise American tradition. Society observed Robinson s play on the field with extremely

Baseball has always been a part of America s pastime. From Babe Ruth calling his shot to Cy
Young winning 511 games, baseball has always been a sport of chance. Baseball is a sport
where one has to give the other team an opportunity to win. A team cannot run the clock down
until the game is over; the other team always has a chance to win the game. The fate of a team

statistics and play with class and dignity he could win the heart of a country. In Rubinstein s

Robert Frost s Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening
Robert Frost s Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is a poem describing the journey of an
unknown traveler on his way back home. At a certain point during his trip he is passing through
the woods owned by a man who lives in the same village as he does. He decides to stop and savor
the beauty of the woods on this particularly dark winterevening. This darkness, however, goes far
beyond the physical setting in the story and is more fitting perhaps, for the way Frost s traveler
feels inside. Robert Frosts Stopping by Woodson a Snowy Evening contains dark themes associated
with death, which are symbolized by his descriptions of winter, darkness, and feelings of loneliness.

It is very fitting for the speaker to be struggling against the lovely, dark and deep (line 13) woods
and to remember that he has miles to go before he sleep[s] (line15, 16) while thinking about the
difficulties he may be having trying to find a market for his harvest. As he begins to feel
disappointed he finds himself being lost to the beauty of the scene. If it were a bright summer
day on which the speaker is stopping, the sleep he refers to might literally be a short rest, but the
poem is set on the darkest evening of the year (line 8) while the woods fill up with snow, (line 4)
and any rest taken in the woods in these conditions would result in the eternal sleep of death.
Sleep is another common symbol for death, and death is the largest theme in Stopping by Woods
as most readers associate the traveler s perspective on the woods as his own desire to rid himself
of the burdens of life. He views death as an event that would free him from the trials and
tribulations of life. He feels like there is no way to escape the disappointment of informing his
family of upcoming struggles due to his failure to provide for them. The woods however, seem
to act as the cradling arms of a mother rocking an agitated infant to sleep. Every element of the
poem works together to create a lullaby effect that calls the speaker to a dark and deep (line 13)
sleep. The gentle imagery of the soft snow and easy wind (line 12), combined with the soft and
gentle tone of the

Homelessness In The United States
Everyone knows of homeless people, but not as many people actually know about homeless
people. In the U.S. there are over 3.5 million people who face homelessness each year. Many
factors play into why people become or end up homeless and it is different for everyone
especially the various age groups of the homeless population; homeless people are from all walks
of life including minors, adults, and elders. As sad as it is the truth is that people under 18 years
make up 39% of the total homeless population and 40% of those minors identify as LGBT. While

Contrary to belief shelters are not a walk in and receive housing type of deal, but rather there is a
process of calling the shelter and being put on a waiting list which often times take much longer
than what the caller was hoping for. With this in place and the fact that shelters are allowed to
turn away homeless people, most teens are rejected housing and sent elsewhere. Pat LaMarche
says in her article when a family presents itself to a homeless shelter and a teenager is present,
the shelter agrees to take the mom and younger kids if the teenaged children . . . leave them and
go elsewhere, (LaMarche, 1). So even when the whole family is homeless the teenager is still
turned away and must go off on their own. Another subject that often times causes young people
to become homeless is emancipation. When a teenager who lives within foster care turns 18 they
are freed to face the world by themselves. It s more like they are kicked out. In many instances the
newlyfound adult won t have anyplace to go to or end up moving into a bad housing situation only
to find themselves without shelter shortly after. California s own Department of Social Services
concluded, 65 percent of emancipating youth lack safe and affordable housing at

Collusion In Baseball
What is it
Collusion is a business term that means owners of different companies working together and taking
certain steps to keep the salaries of workers low to make sure they (the owners) make more money.
In baseball, collusion includes owners working with each other to make sure that competitive
bidding or players jointly negotiating with the owners does not happen. There have been at least
eight different allegations of collusion being put together.
How it started
Collusion in baseball has been referred in the past as a gentleman s agreement . At the end of the
baseball season in 1918, in an effort to keep the player salaries low, the owners released all players

After the first rulings in the first two collusion cases, the owners decided it was time to change the
way they went about conspiring with one another. It was then that they put together what they

were being made to certain players. The MLBPA filed yet another grievance in early 1988.

Taking a Look at the Arab Culture
Islam is the religion practiced by the Saudis and it governs the personal, economical, legal as well
as political lives. Islam basically started in Saudi Arabia. Many Muslims visit the country every
year to perform pilgrimage of the Holy Kaaba.
Among the obligations of Muslims, prayer comes first. As a Muslim, I pray 5 times in a day.
Friday is a holy day for Muslims. Most of the companies consider Friday and Thursday to be their
weekend. During Ramadan, Muslims observe fast starting from dawn till dusk and they are
allowed to work for only 6 hours in a day.
Where family values and culture is concerned, the tribe and family are basis of social culture. It
could be even seen in the naming conventions that we, the Saudis, tend to be cognizant of
heritage, clan, nuclear family and our extended family. We take responsibilities toward our
families very seriously. The families happen to be quite large and extended family happens to be
very close. An individual derives assistance and social network in bad times from his family.
When it comes to Arabic language, it would be worth mentioning to say that during Middle Ages,
mathematics and science received great boost in Arab Islamic far flung civilization, that stretched
as far as Asia. With the passage of time through commercial, scholarly and military contacts, Europe

Thyroid Hormones, Thyroxine ( T4 ) And Triiodothyronine (...
PPL 7. Thyroid function
Thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), are implicated in numerous process,
including growth and development of muscle, bones and the central nervous system (CNS);
metabolism by increasing basal metabolic rate, calorigenesis and appetite; and have cardiovascular
effects due to they make the heart beats faster and harder. Deregulation of the correct function of
the thyroid can lead to different pathological process such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism,
thyroiditis, goiters, thyroid cancer and solitary thyroid nodules. The determination of thyroid
hormones, especially FT4, together with TSH is an important element in clinical routine diagnosis.
It is useful when thyroid disorders are suspected and also for the monitoring of therapy.
Before this learning unit, I was aware of general aspect of thyroid structure and function. But I
found it helpful to adequate myself into the synthesis and control of hormone production. The
transport of thyroid hormones along the body was new to me, as well as, the methods of
measurement of thyroid hormones. Some of the thyroid disorders are quite common, so as a health
worker, it is important to be aware of the different tests used to assess the thyroid, such as, plasma
T3, T4 and TSH; besides the tests that establish the cause of the dysfunction, including thyroid
autoantibodies (anti thyroid peroxidase and anti thyroglobulin), serum thyroid binding globulin

Hero Vs Hero
Pericles once said The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before
them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it. More than 2000 years later,
Pericles thoughts are still those of what today s hero is. A hero today struggles, yet still manages to
overcome these complications with an act of bravery. Rather than thinking of themselves, a herois
usually willing to put others before themselves and show audacity in the face of difficulties.
First, Heroes are not thinking of themselves, but instead are showing acts of kindness towards
others. For example, after 9/11 a large amount of sailors showed up to evacuate Manhattan, due to
closed down airplanes and subways. These sailors showed pluck because many of them believed
they were a target for another attack. Vincent Ardolino, one of the captains who responded to the
call, recounts his conversation with his wife before he leaves. After learning of his decision,
Ardolino s wife asks But what if they attack again. To this he responds Well then that s something I
have to live with (Boatlift Documentary) showing that he does not think about what may happen to
him, but about what may happen to others. Similarly to his decisions is the mole rescue workers
who dug people out of their homes after the earthquake in Mexico. Not only have these rescue
workers volunteered in this recent earthquake, but they have also taken action in earthquakes

What My Hard Work Has Shown Me
What My Hard Work Has Shown Me
The beat of my heart thumps harder by the second as my high school volleyball coach announces
at the 2016 end of the year banquet, that their is one Honorable Mention and one All Conference
award within the Wright County. After playing volleyball for eight years as a setter, assisting
1,134 kills (with my two and a half years on varsity), and receiving Heart Beat of the Team Award,
mentally and physically I knew there might be a chance I had a shot at getting one of the two
awards. However my hardworking, and valuable teammates are just as talented.
Captain, starting libero, and MVP Skyler Wallisch can get low and pick up anything. She s my
right hand as a setter, I can rely on her to get the first pass up to me. She is a very important
player and has different colored jersey to signify her position as a libero on the court. Also Co
Captain Ashley Fuhrmann has a good chance at getting one of the awards. She can jump really
high for her height, and swing fast. Many of my assists came from her. The Honorable Mention
Award is given to a player whose name was brought up, and signified as a valuable athlete in a
meeting held with all the Wright County volleyball coaches. The All Conference Award is handed
out to six players out of the entire Wright County Volleyball District (East and West, consisting of
fourteen teams) whom the volleyball coaches believe would make the best team in the Wright
County.

The Tower Of Babel
a) One of God s reasons for thwarting the construction of the of the tower were that the people
were building the tower as a tribute to themselves, they were trying to be with God like. Almost
as if they were building their own Mount Olympus. It was an expression of their own greatness, as
well as a way to keep all of the people together like an exclusive club. Goddid not want the world
to end up in groups of seclusion. Another reason is that God probably didn t want a group of all
powerful humans causing havoc on the Earth. ...nothing they plan to do will be impossible for

c) The theme of language and communication can definitely be related to the biblical story. The

The prosecutor of Ethiopian revenue and custom authority (prosecutor here in after) had brought a
charge against Mr Daniel mekonin (the accused here after) before federal first instance court,
alleging that the accused had been caught while transporting 46.96 KG of crude gold from Ethiopia
to Djibouti, between walechit and metahara. The prosecutor asserted that the accused committed
contraband crime by infringing custom authority proclamation number 60/97 and 368/2003 of

The court had reversed the decision of the appellate court based on the reasoning that there is no
rule that dictate the subsidiary law should be publicized and written in certain language. In addition
the court asserted that the Ethiopian national bank had enacted this directive based on the power
given to the bank by the legislator in accordance with proclamation number 83/93, so as to
implement this proclamation.
3. Critique
Before dealing with the issue at hand let me provide general overview of principle of legality, the
basic ethical structure governing both the enactment and interpretation of criminal Statutes are the
principle of legality. It is commonly represented by the maxim nullum crimen sine lege, nulla poena
sine lege or no crime or punishment without law .This is a matter of general legislative morality
since it requires an individual to be given fair warning of what he or she may or may not
do.Moreover; it discourages state use of the criminal law for political rather than social ends. There
are four key attribute of principle of legality, which expressed in the legal principle of lexscripta
(punishment must be based on written law), lexcerta (the form and severity of punishment must be
clearly defined and distinguishable),

Social Stigma And Self Stigma Of Mental Illness
This paper will be discussing the topic that has been selected for the upcoming integrative project.
This topic is the social stigma that is behind seeking mental help among individuals in North
America. Stigmatization can have a severe effect on the likelihood that an individual will seek
services. The topic was selected due to an interest as to how public stigma and self stigma may
play a role or how they may interfere with one s decision making of seeking mental healthservices.
Even though the consequences of not seeking the counselling may be severe. It is important to
understand the reasons why people do not seek the help they need and how stigma plays a role, so
a solution can be made to change it.

connected to attitudes and intentions to seeking necessary counselling.
BACKGROUND SECTION (1 PAGE)
Looking at the background of sociology, we know that sociology is the study of human society
(Macionis, 2004:4). In sociology there is a point of view that is called sociological perspective,
explains to the readers that sociologists look for general patterns in the behaviour of particular
people. It looks at how society shapes our lives, little do we realize, shapes our way of thinking
and our actions. Even very personal decisions that we make are shaped by society (Macionis,
2004:4 5). Knowing this about sociology helps us understand how society plays a huge role in
how we shape our lives, especially the decisions that we make, which in the case of someone

John Keith Atkinson s Life aa a Child Laborour Essay
John Keith Atkinson was the son of former agricultural labourers James and Mary Atkinson.
They moved to Holmeside to work in Outcote Mill when their agricultural employer s farm was
sold by the landowner to another landowner to make his holdings bigger and more profitable.
With their jobs gone and their tied home lost, they followed other migrants into the town. John
was an infant when they moved. In Holmeside the Atkinson family, including five children, lived
in the fusty cellar of an already crowded house that gave rude shelter to four families besides
them. Two families occupied two upstairs bedrooms, and another two lived in a single ground
floor room. The parents of all five families and the older children worked at Staithes mill.... Show

There, children learned through beatings, deprivation, and fear to yield to their keeper. Keepers
tormented their minds, abused their bodies, and determined every other aspect of their existence.
Like most pauper children, John grew morose and sullen. He lacked the spontaneity of normal
children, and lived in permanent dread that another tragedy might crush him. He remembered the
day he and sixty other children were ordered to make paper parcels of their belongings. Brown
paper and string were provided. With their bundles, they were packed like sardines into the back of
two horse drawn caravans and trundled over rough roads for a week before arriving at Outcote Mill.
They were bruised and in pain from their confinement, having had no room to stretch their limbs
during the journey. Jumping down from the carts at journey s end sent shafts of pain through them.
From the moment he arrived in the care of Reynold Walkden Staithes, young Atkinson was nothing
but a factory apprentice, one of many whose individuality and needs were disregarded. This was his
introduction to the apprentice system that was purportedly governed by humane regulations. The
provisions of the law not being applied, the result was that appalling cruelties were routinely visited
upon apprentice children. Manufacturing industries got into their stride as the seventeenth century

Female Circumcision
The western world has a very bad wrap when it comes to looking at foreign practices objectively;
so it s really up for debate whether or not female genital mutilation is a morally sound practice.
Afterall, why does anyone in America have the right to judge this practice or to intervene,
especially with the presence of male circumcision in our own culture? The means by which they
received these circumcisions however, are totally different than a third world countries female
genital circumcision procedure. Male circumcision is largely done in a clean, organized and safe
environment while female circumcision is done mostly in third world countries without the
capability/tools necessary to create such an environment. There are three basic types of genital

More than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries in Africa, the

opposition to the idea creates a considerable social pressure for families and their loved ones. In
Kenya, men consider uncircumcised girls unclean, immature and unfit for marriage. Girls are

female genital mutilation is explicitly a sacrifice for the fertility both of the individual and her

would be a lie because statistically, elderly women often do the most to perpetuate the custom as

Analysis Of Spring By Alistair Macleod
Attitudes Happiness It is a philosophical opinion that happiness cannot exist without melancholy.
Alistair MacLeod s short story The Boat and Edna St. Vincent Millay s poem Spring poignantly
illustrate this idea. Despite the fact that both compositions emphasize the notion that life is often
tainted with underlying negativity, the central characters of the two works differ in their ability
to navigate through troubles. This nuance in approach is what allows one character to experience
a modicum of joy even in the midst of adversity. Conversely, the character that lacks this nuanced
ability experiences only dissatisfaction. From the onset, both literary pieces convey gloom even
when discussing subjects which many would consider joyful. For instance, Millay s poem
approaches the season of spring with disgruntlement, as the narrator enters a rhetorical discussion
by claiming that [t]he smell of the earth is good (Millay), and then asking, what does that
signify? / Not only underground are the brains of men / [e]aten by maggots (Millay). This
condemnation of spring is not an isolated one. The poem opens by criticizing spring, and
addresses the season directly by demanding [t]o what purpose, April, do you return again? / Beauty
is not enough (Millay). The narrator, even while addressing a time of the earth s regeneration, is
mired in the macabre, ultimately leaving the reader with a sense of despondency. The concept of
underpinned bitterness is also prevalent in

Cabeza de Vaca Essay
Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is best known as the first Spaniard to explore what we now consider
to be southwestern United States. His nine year odyssey is chronicled within the book The
Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition. His account is considered especially interesting because it is
one of the very first documents that illustrates interactions between American natives and explorers.
However, when examining the exploration of the modern United States, there are many arguments
that have to do with the entitlement to the land and the motivations behind settling in the first
place. Most explorers were obviously in favor of their own conquests and Cabeza de Vaca is of
course no exception. In Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition, Cabeza de... Show more content on

Indians and how fierce and relentless they are. He describes them by saying, whoever has to fight

although one side might have more men than the other. Such is their custom. (68) They have these
customs that are very unnatural and are not normative behavior. Cabeza de Vaca refers to the

The National Constituent Assembly solved some of Frances short term problems, but caused
significant discontent due to its inability to resolve long term problems, that had been destroying

The financial crises of the 1780 s did not magically disappear when the feudal system was
abolished. In fact, France s financial situation was becoming worse, with prices of bread and
flour at an all time high. The Constituent Assembly, eager to solve France s economic problem,
brought in a new currency, called the Assignats. Effectively, each Assignat was an ownership
right to a piece of land, a kind of collateral from the government. Most of the land had previously
been owned by the Church, but was forfeited to the State under the Civil Constitution of the
Clergy, an act that proclaimed the Clergy had to swear allegiance to the State, rather than the
Pope, and therefore all their property and wages were put under State control. It was one of the
most successful reforms, as the new currency stabilised the economy for a critical period of
time, and released the pressure that was on France, financially. It was also during this period that
the trial by jury system was introduced, a system that still exists today. Twelve citizens were
used as a jury to decide on the guilt or innocence of their peers, in a public trial. It was a giant
step towards the democratic system of government that is used in the modern world. On August 4
1789, the Declaration of the Rights of Man, was proclaimed. It was an almost radical declaration,
based on freedoms and human rights, and with it came the abolition of Feudal privileges. It

these environmental issues worse. Following that, the authors gave the enough amounts of

natural resources for their basic necessity to unlimited calling for the never enough for luxury life.
Therefore, as the needs for natural resources grew infinitely the authors thought that it is no doubt

Misogynistic Gender Roles In Harry Potter
In their article, Cinderfella: J.K. Rowling s Wily Web of Gender , Gallardo and Smith argue that
by offering a proactive feminist interpretation they will show that there are alternative radical
readings of the series for both children and adults (191). They use several criteria to prove their
point by showing that the story of the hero Harry Potteris a cyclical feminine narrative (191). They
show this by presenting that the plot moves from a passive and difficult home life into the active
world of Hogwarts and back again repeatedly (191). This format is used in strictly traditional girl
tales such as the historic story of the heroine Cinderella which has been retold in over 700 versions
(195). The series presents misogynistic genderroles for most of the female characters such as
Petunia Dursley, Molly Weasley, and the departed Lily Potter who all represent reclusive
homemakers without much power (193 4). The series does portray Hermione Granger, Professor
Sibyll Trelawney, and Professor Minerva McGonagall who are women with a voice abate an

Essay On Creation Myths
Creation Myths My mythology class has been reading and learning about most of the creation
myths. A creation myth is how the earth began and how humans first came to inhabit it. Also, we
have reviewed the motifs of the myths. A motif is like a pattern of the similar situations happening
throughout the myths. The three motifs I thought that were the most common were that most had a
single creator, people were created from organic material, and the battles that went on between most
of the gods.
Most myths had a single creator In my opinion I think that if there were more than two creators then
that would be too much power. A creator is the one that puts the earthtogether and forms the first
humans on earth. Quite a few creation myth stories had only one god that created everything. For
example, the Babylonian had one creator which was Marduk, the Hindu had one creator which was
Prajapati, the Inuit had a single creator which was Raven, the Chinese said there was only one and
his name was Pan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the battles were bigger than others but I thought that the battles were important to use as
a motif. In the Hindu creation there was a disagreement of the choices Prajapati was making with
his daughter. The other gods got very angry with Prajapati. For revenge the gods created a monster
named Rudra, and it haunted Prajapati. Once the monstrous creature found him, he shot him with
an arrow and killed him. In the Norse creation Odin was the god that created the humans, but the
gods did not accept how he was making them. Ymir s sisters especially did not agree with Odin s
idea so they planned to get revenge on Odin. The sisters gathered at the foot of the Yggdrasil and
carved lines into it, the lines represented human lives and the twist and turns that humans go
through. Humans would never be as powerful, not even Odin could fix the

There is evidence that personal beliefs influence the efficacy of common psychological problems
cures. Personal perception and will power over common problems like depression, sexual
dysfunction, smoking, insomnia, and gambling among others is believed necessary in the ability of

Christ Community Church Essay
Millions of children are waiting to be adopted by a family from the ages of 2 months old until they
are released at the age of eighteen. Many of these children have little to no known affiliation or
influence of religion. Christ Community Church had interacted with more than sixty outside
organizations to help raise financial aid and encourage religious influence in adoptive and pre
adoptive families of orphans. The Christ Community Church builds its credibility with the
information it provides and the organizations that are affiliated, using a strong appeal to emotionby
showing helpless orphans, the ad also provides a logical appeal by giving background information
about the organization providing a website for further information.
The ad is engulfed in black and white to induce the sadness of two African american orphans
wrapped around each other, as if they did not not trust anyone. The founders and pastors leading
this organization are shown at the top of the page with the rank in which they are held. Additional
information for which the organization takes place, is available on the given ... Show more content

Emotions are a leading cause to influence in many ads that are shown. Emotions bring out the
thoughtful and caring side of people, making them are more willing to help those in need. The
image of two young kids produces the emotions sympathy for children that do not have parents and
have no source of faith. This invokes a sorrow feeling inside the audience and creates an emotional
uprise in the ad. These children have nothing to call their own, many of them feel unwanted and
unloved. Adoption of an orphan and the adoption of Christ in this child can greatly increase the
feeling of value and acceptance this child has. By appealing to the audience s emotions, the church
has an upper hand in the success of the organization. These emotions are the primary factor leading

Analysis Of The Book Count Ugolino
Count Ugolino
In the first round of the ninth circle of the Inferno, Virgil and Dante see two spirits pent in the
ice; one spirit chews on the head of the other sinner. Dante questions the chewing sinner, and with
this the soul lifts his from the other soul s devoured head, and begins to tell his story (Inf). He
introduces himself as Count Ugolino, a nobleman of Pisa, and tells Dante that the other sinner,
whom he was gnawing on, is Archbishop Ruggieri. Through a deceitful deception, the Archbishop
put Ugolino and his suns in a tower, where they received only a small amount of light each day
from a small lancid window in the wall. One day, when Ugolino and his sons were usually brought
their food, they heard the door of the tower being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ugolino uses his story s version as an act of revenge upon the bishop, whom he burns in Hell
eternally with revulsion (Franke 31). Dante the Poet shares this story to allow the reader to feel
immense sympathy and to stimulate the reader s hatred of Ugolino s tyrant; the suffering father in
the story forgets his fate within his agony that he can do nothing for his children or himself. In
addition, this suffering was an injustice, which gives the poet the right to be against Pisa (Yate 93).
Ugolino s story has been constantly paired with Paolo and Francesca s story; both stories arouse
deep emotion in anguish, but contrast in Dante the Pilgrim s reactions and responses to both
sinners. Through these stories, Dante indicates human love and human sorrow break through in the
Inferno (Yate 95). Ugolino is the father of sorrows that are easy to weep for. As a man of rank as
a Count, he is oppressed by a priest, and with this Ugolino becomes an emotional and liberty
loving English lord (Yate 99). However, Ugolino is filled with rage, which persuades him to
gnaw at his oppressor s skull. Dante seems to use this episode as a narrative of revenge, exposing
Dante the Poet s weakness in his god like personality. He thereby produces a narrative of the
damning of sin in expressing his own anger (Franke 27). Between the two haters, they share
absolutely no pity, as there was towards Francesca and her lover. Ugolino and Ruggieri rage with

The 95 these were known all through out, this would be impossible without the printing press to make the 95 Theses known throughout Germany in two weeks and throughout Europe in a month. . Although one of the consequences of the printing press was exploration, reformation was the most important because the printing press made people more literate and created new believes. Now, there is a significantly increasing demand for novel, minimally invasive treatments as the need for tumour detection rises. Wang et al. in their study coupled the heat transfer and fluid flow model established in a three dimensional space consisting of tumour, normal tissue and vascular network [8] . This model was used to predict the effect of vascular network on IIF, tumour destruction and thermal history during treatment. The numerical approaches to the multidimensional freezing problem during CA may generally be divided to the finite difference method (FDM) and the finite element method (FEM). The 1930s were a period of many changes in Spain, especially because Francisco Franco started ruling the country and the political problems that arose. Things slowly started changing for women because of the foundation of Mujeres Libres, a female anarchist organization that fought for female rights. Until then, the general view of women was that of Proudhon, which meant that women were to be seen as reproducers whose role was to contribute to the society by taking care of their household and their children . This was especially common in the rural areas of Spain, where women could even be forced into arranged marriages against their will and almost had no say in what happened to them. He wasn t afraid of anything and would take on the biggest tasks, even if he didn t want to. He would do anything for anyone, especially his family. There was never a time where he said no. He loved to argue because, like everyone else, he always had to be right. He was a hero. My hero. I was fortunate enough to call this man my dad. October 24, 2016, is a day I will never forget. I rolled out of bed that Monday morning from a long, lonely weekend. I had the house to myself and worked all weekend. My parents were going to see the Kansas City Chiefs play the New Orleans Saints. My dad wore a Seattle Seahawksjersey to the game because that s how much he d loved his team. The Seahawks ended up tying with the Cardinals that day 6 6. I heard my parents walk into the house around midnight. I slightly opened my eyes but fell asleep again. I will argue the opinion using the ethical principle of beneficence, researching medical treatments of artificial nutrition and providing example of life sustaining treatments that are equally in similar to artificial nutrition and hydration. In the vignette of Ms. Conrad, I argue reasons for removing a Nasogastric Intubation (NG) to reduce other medical complications that can occur, and the discomfort the tube could cause to the patient. Life sustaining treatment refers to all treatments which have the potential to postpone a patient s death. Examples of such treatments include those of mechanical ventilation, dialysis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, antibiotics, and artificial nutrition and hydration. I believe that withdrawing artificial nutrition is not morally different from other types of life sustaining treatment. Artificial nutrition and hydration is a medical treatment that allows a person to receive nutrients when they are unable to take them by themselves. The treatment is provided by medical professionals through an intravenous administration or by methods of inserting a tube in the patient s stomach. The reasons why this particular treatment is not morally different is because the procedure is at inconvenience to the patient; not at the patient s comfort. • 14. Stress And Heart Stress Sometimes physical stress can contribute to having a heart attack. Doing intense physical activity will make the hormone adrenaline is released during intense physical activity. There is also very low blood levels of potassium or magnesium, major blood loss, and lack of oxygen. Also the tendency to have arrhythmias run in some families and is passed through genes. An example of this is long QT syndrome, which is a disorder of the hearts electrical activity. The problems with tiny pores on the surface of heart muscle cells cause the disorder. Some people choose to drink too much alcohol or smoke cigarettes to control their stress, but these habits can increase bloodpressure and damage arterywalls. And your body s response to stress may be a headache, back strain, or stomach pains. Stress can also strip your energy, mess up your sleep and make you feel cranky, forgetful and out of control. A stressful situation will set off a chain of events. Your body releases adrenaline, a hormone that temporarily causes your breathing and heart rate to speed up and your blood pressure to rise. When stress is constant, your body remains in high gear off and on for days or weeks at a time. He decides to stop and savor the beauty of the woods on this particularly dark winterevening. This darkness, however, goes far beyond the physical setting in the story and is more fitting perhaps, for the way Frost s traveler feels inside. As he begins to feel disappointed he finds himself being lost to the beauty of the scene. If it were a bright summer day on which the speaker is stopping, the sleep he refers to might literally be a short rest, but the poem is set on the darkest evening of the year (line 8) while the woods fill up with snow, (line 4) and any rest taken in the woods in these conditions would result in the eternal sleep of death. Sleep is another common symbol for death, and death is the largest theme in Stopping by Woods as most readers associate the traveler s perspective on the woods as his own desire to rid himself of the burdens of life. He views death as an event that would free him from the trials and tribulations of life. He feels like there is no way to escape the disappointment of informing his family of upcoming struggles due to his failure to provide for them. The woods however, seem to act as the cradling arms of a mother rocking an agitated infant to sleep. • 30. Analysis Of Spring By Alistair Macleod Attitudes Happiness It is a philosophical opinion that happiness cannot exist without melancholy. Alistair MacLeod s short story The Boat and Edna St. Vincent Millay s poem Spring poignantly illustrate this idea. Despite the fact that both compositions emphasize the notion that life is often tainted with underlying negativity, the central characters of the two works differ in their ability to navigate through troubles. This nuance in approach is what allows one character to experience a modicum of joy even in the midst of adversity. Conversely, the character that lacks this nuanced ability experiences only dissatisfaction. From the onset, both literary pieces convey gloom even when discussing subjects which many would consider joyful. For instance, Millay s poem approaches the season of spring with disgruntlement, as the narrator enters a rhetorical discussion by claiming that [t]he smell of the earth is good (Millay), and then asking, what does that signify? / Not only underground are the brains of men / [e]aten by maggots (Millay). This condemnation of spring is not an isolated one. The poem opens by criticizing spring, and addresses the season directly by demanding [t]o what purpose, April, do you return again? / Beauty is not enough (Millay). The narrator, even while addressing a time of the earth s regeneration, is mired in the macabre, ultimately leaving the reader with a sense of despondency. The concept of underpinned bitterness is also prevalent in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Cabeza de Vaca Essay Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is best known as the first Spaniard to explore what we now consider to be southwestern United States. His nine year odyssey is chronicled within the book The Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition. His account is considered especially interesting because it is one of the very first documents that illustrates interactions between American natives and explorers. However, when examining the exploration of the modern United States, there are many arguments that have to do with the entitlement to the land and the motivations behind settling in the first place. Most explorers were obviously in favor of their own conquests and Cabeza de Vaca is of course no exception. In Chronicle of the Narvaez Expedition, Cabeza de... He also goes on to explain the warrior like tendencies of the Indians and how fierce and relentless they are. He describes them by saying, whoever has to fight Indians must take great care not to let them think he is disheartened or that he covets what they own. In war they must be treated very harshly, for should they notice either fear or greed, as a people they know how to bide their time waiting for revenge and take courage from their enemies fears. After using up all their arrows, they part, each going his own way, without attempting pursuit, although one side might have more men than the other. Such is their custom. The National Constituent Assembly solved some of Frances short term problems, but caused significant discontent due to its inability to resolve long term problems, that had been destroying France economically, politically and socially. There were some groups of society that were quite content with the reforms of the Constituent Assembly, such as a majority of the bourgeoisie, peasants who gained from the abolition of the Feudal system, and some members of the first and second Estate. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The financial crises of the 1780 s did not magically disappear when the feudal system was abolished. In fact, France s financial situation was becoming worse, with prices of bread and flour at an all time high. The Constituent Assembly, eager to solve France s economic problem, brought in a new currency, called the Assignats. Effectively, each Assignat was an ownership right to a piece of land, a kind of collateral from the government. Most of the land had previously been owned by the Church, but was forfeited to the State under the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, an act that proclaimed the Clergy had to swear allegiance to the State, rather than the Pope, and therefore all their property and wages were put under State control. It was one of the most successful reforms, as the new currency stabilised the economy for a critical period of time, and released the pressure that was on France, financially. It was also during this period that the trial by jury system was introduced, a system that still exists today. Twelve citizens were used as a jury to decide on the guilt or innocence of their peers, in a public trial. It was a giant step towards the democratic system of government that is used in the modern world. On August 4 1789, the Declaration of the Rights of Man, was proclaimed. It was an almost radical declaration, based on freedoms and human rights, and with it came the abolition of Feudal privileges. It included freedom of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They use several criteria to prove their point by showing that the story of the hero Harry Potteris a cyclical feminine narrative (191). They show this by presenting that the plot moves from a passive and difficult home life into the active world of Hogwarts and back again repeatedly (191). This format is used in strictly traditional girl tales such as the historic story of the heroine Cinderella which has been retold in over 700 versions (195). The series presents misogynistic genderroles for most of the female characters such as Petunia Dursley, Molly Weasley, and the departed Lily Potter who all represent reclusive homemakers without much power (193 4). A creation myth is how the earth began and how humans first came to inhabit it. Also, we have reviewed the motifs of the myths. A motif is like a pattern of the similar situations happening throughout the myths. The three motifs I thought that were the most common were that most had a single creator, people were created from organic material, and the battles that went on between most of the gods. Most myths had a single creator In my opinion I think that if there were more than two creators then that would be too much power. A creator is the one that puts the earthtogether and forms the first humans on earth. Quite a few creation myth stories had only one god that created everything. For example, the Babylonian had one creator which was Marduk, the Hindu had one creator which was Prajapati, the Inuit had a single creator which was Raven, the Chinese said there was only one and his name was Pan ... Ymir s sisters especially did not agree with Odin s idea so they planned to get revenge on Odin. Dante questions the chewing sinner, and with this the soul lifts his from the other soul s devoured head, and begins to tell his story (Inf). He introduces himself as Count Ugolino, a nobleman of Pisa, and tells Dante that the other sinner, whom he was gnawing on, is Archbishop Ruggieri. Through a deceitful deception, the Archbishop put Ugolino and his suns in a tower, where they received only a small amount of light each day from a small lancid window in the wall. Ugolino uses his story s version as an act of revenge upon the bishop, whom he burns in Hell eternally with revulsion (Franke 31). Dante the Poet shares this story to allow the reader to feel immense sympathy and to stimulate the reader s hatred of Ugolino s tyrant; the suffering father in the story forgets his fate within his agony that he can do nothing for his children or himself. In addition, this suffering was an injustice, which gives the poet the right to be against Pisa (Yate 93). Ugolino s story has been constantly paired with Paolo and Francesca s story; both stories arouse deep emotion in anguish, but contrast in Dante the Pilgrim s reactions and responses to both sinners. Through these stories, Dante indicates human love and human sorrow break through in the Inferno (Yate 95). Ugolino is the father of sorrows that are easy to weep for. As a man of rank as a Count, he is oppressed by a priest, and with this Ugolino becomes an emotional and liberty loving English lord (Yate 99). However, Ugolino is filled with rage, which persuades him to gnaw at his oppressor s skull. Dante seems to use this episode as a narrative of revenge, exposing Dante the Poet s weakness in his god like personality. He thereby produces a narrative of the damning of sin in expressing his own anger (Franke 27). Between the two haters, they share absolutely no pity, as there was towards Francesca and her lover.
