Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

2. INDEX
1. What´s the discrimination?
2. Types of discrimination
3. Discrimination in Spain
4. Discrimination in Africa
5. Discrimination in Asia
3. 1. What´s discrimination.
• It’s when the people treat a person in a
different or inferior way. This difference can be
about the skin’s colour, race, sex, age, culture,
religion or ideology.
4. 2. Types of discrimination
• Social
• Labor
• Sexual
• Aesthetic
• Educational
• About liberty to decide
5. - social
• In the society women have got the role of
looking after the family and working at home.
If there’s a problem in her house the woman
usually leaves her job ; but the man doesn’t
leave it.
6. - labor
• The work environment treats women in a inferior way . You
can see that in two ways:
• ACCESS TO WORK :
• Many times when you read the newspaper you can
read:”This work is only for men” but it’s a work that a
woman can do.
• When a boss has to choose between a man and a woman he
often chooses the man because he thinks the woman can
leave.
• There aren’t many women directing greats companys.
• SALARY:
• The women’s salary is sometimes shorter than the men’s
salary, but the work is the same.
7. - sexual
• Women often represent a sexual symbol and
they support violations.
8. - Aesthetic
• Women always have to be beautiful and look
like young because in the magazines and
television all women are pretty and thin
models .Their bodys are fantastic.
• For example: When a man is older the people
say: “ He’s interesting and handsome” ,But
when a woman is older the people say :
“ She’s ugly “.
9. - Educational
• A lot of times women can’t continue their
education because it’s very expensive and in a
family with children, the parents prefer that
the sons study.
10. - About liberty to decide
• In some countries , for example the islamics
countries , men are very posesive and they
don’t let women to choose their future .
Women can’t select their husband.
12. Discrimination in Spain
• Aggressions against women have a particular
incidence in the reality of Spain.
• Men usually shout and hit them.
• In Spain there are women´s organizations that
fight against all forms of gender violence.
14. • Once the woman marries doesn´t have an
opinion to decide anything.
• .If the woman commits crime the punishment
is bigger than if the man and is the same
crime.
.
15. • The woman does not have the same right to
go to the school as man.
They do not let her decide if wants to get
divorced.
16. • They cannot work outside the house since
they have to devote take car to the children.
• The woman who has positive HIV gets
sterilized without authorization.
17. Discrimination of women in Asia
• The situation of the Asian woman is as
complex as the economy of this countries.
18. • Sex discrimination in Asia is already reflected
in the disparity of births, since it has been
estimated that "missing" about 96 million
girls, especially in China and India, who were
deprived of adequate medical care because of
their sex.
19. • On the other hand the birth of a child is a
cause for celebration for the family. In those
societies are taught to children, since they are
small, that men are intelligent and virile and in
women is only rated the virginity and beauty
20. • Until the propaganda discriminates
against women. It represents the
classic woman, you have to be
young and beautiful, it has to know
take care of the house and know
cooking. Girls must play with dolls
and help their mothers with
household chores. They were also
forced to stay home to take care of
their brothers, for example. For that
reason there is more to the college,
stop look very young, and as a
result, constitute the highest rate of
illiteracy.
21. • Men control the
procreation of
children and exercise
an extremely violent
attitude before the
adultery, reaching
stoning adulterous
women.
