Discourse analysis is the study of language functioning in context. It examines both spoken and written language. Spoken discourse typically has lower lexical density and turns involve a single speaker at a time with minimal overlap or interruptions between turns. Variation theory developed by Labov analyzes the structure of spoken narratives. Critical discourse analysis examines the relationship between language, ideology, power and sociocultural change. Corpus linguistics uses large language samples to objectively describe language use and variation in discourse.
