2. ROMAIN GAVRAS
Previous Work – Created music videos for Jay Z & Kanye West, DJ Medhi, M.I.A
In Gavras’ pieces they often focus on a darker, but realistic version of reality. He does this
through the Mise en Scene of low key lighting, dark costumes and props which hold a large
number of negative connotations, but also through editing of low saturation and slow pace. The
narratives in his work also contain a large amount of violence and death, completely polarizing
the mood.
In our own music video I do not feel that Gavras’ style of work is suitable. This is due to his work
being too gritty and creating a very negative image for the consumer. Also the slow pace of
editing that he tends to will not work for our own song as it has quite a fast beat and is meant to
create an overall positive mood for the audience. However he effectively portrays a message to
the audience in a unique way, which we will try to recreate in our own piece through the
narrative.
3. DANIELS
Previous Work – Foster The People, Tenacious D, The Shins, DJ Snake + Lil Jon
In my research I found that the Daniels Duo’s work tends to focus on creating a more
upbeat, humorous video which follows a narrative or concept than to portray a
message to the audience. Their work often has an overall positive message to the
audience which is shown through bright colours, exaggerated actions and the
quirkiness of the situations the characters find themselves.
In our own video we will use aspects of the Daniels’ work; exaggerated and positive
performance, along with vibrant colours in certain scenes to help create a happy tone.
However in our piece we want to focus on creating a message to the audience, which
isn’t a focus in Daniels’ work.
4. TOM SCHARPLING
Previous Work – Real Estate, Monster Magnet, Kurt Vile
From my research I found that Sharpling’s music videos tend to follow a narrative
whilst also creating a message to the consumer. His videos have a positive tone to
them which is achieved through the performance of the artists, the high key lighting,
bright colours, and elements of humor throughout.
I think that Sharplings’ style of directing will fit well into our own music video. His
work effectively sells the artist to the audience through a large amount of screen time,
and central focus on the artist, which is aspect we must include into our own video.
Also his videos have a very low budget, supporting the use of his style in an indie rock
band due to the low amount of money we have to spend making our own.
