1. CONSTRUCTION OF THE MISE-EN-SCENE
LOCATION
We are using a central City location to create a chaotic atmosphere that will denote the current
situation of two people from each couple having no spare time for the other in their busy lives. The
city setting also communicates the typical narrative of the indie genre, to portray the realism of the
music video. This will appeal to our audience as we are aiming at 17-25, who may well have jobs/
developingrelationshipsthattheyare strugglingtohandlebecauseof the chaosof work/studentlife.
To create the mise-en-scene of each couples’ apartment we will construct two very modern and
trendy layouts at our friend’s house. The modernity of the mise-en-scene will appeal to the target
audience, especially as we have targeted workingclass- middle class individuals, whom live in urban
areasandare familiarwiththesetting.Thiswillallowthe audience torelate thesituationsof the music
video.
Withinthe City, forthe pastsectionsof the relationshipwe are usingthesettinginSt NicholasMarket.
Thisis a very vintage/retropartof the city, whichwill conveythe retroaspectof the indie genre and
create a relaxed happy atmosphere, that will portray the couples in their happier times. The beach
setting will construct an atmosphere of calmness and show the romance of the past times in the
relationship.
Forthe future partof ourmusicvideowe are usingthe mise-en-sceneof the harbour. We have chosen
this for the mise-en-scene as it is aesthetically pleasing and will add a sense of refection as we are
usingthe area of the harbourwhere the wateris visible, thiswillconnote asense of reflectingonthe
past and looking towards the future.
For the artist’s parts, the mise-en-scene is highly focused around nature to create an atmosphere of
calmnessandcreate a naturalisticfeel. We have chosenaestheticallyattractive locationsaroundthe
ChewValleyLake, whichthe artistwill appearsinging- thisisatypical locationof the indie genre asit
conveys that the artists are true-to-life and humble.
COSTUME AND PROPS
The costumes in certain scenes differ; however,we have main costumes that are used for certain
purposes. We are using very ‘hipster’ and retro costumesto mirror the notable costumesthat recur
inthe indie genre, thiswillappeal tothe audience asdue tothe differing costumes theycanaspire to
those styles as they are very current. In term of our artist we wanted to further convey the style of
‘James Bay’, therefore, we are using a hat that the artist will wear throughout the music video- as
James Bay is notable for his hat. We have done this so the music video and artist will be more
memorable forthe audience andtheywill notice the style instantly.Justas Andrew Goodwinpointed
out inhisessay,‘Dancinginthe Distractionfactory’,the recordlabel hascertaindemandssuchasthe
artist having a visual style recurring across their work to create a visual style the audience will
recognise.
For our characters in the music video, we are adding a sentimental piece of jewellery for the two
individuals whoare unhappyinthe relationship.Thiswill provide asense of lettinggoandmovingon
as these itemswill be noticeable inmanyshotsof the past and present- actingasa representationof
themholdingontotheirrelationshipandthe past.However,atthe endof the musicvideotheseitems
2. will be thrown away, as the characters move on and act as a symbol of the other two individuals in
the relationship finally realising what they have lost.
LIGHTING
The lightinginthe presentsectionsof the musicvideowill be veryblue toned, thiswill create amood
of sadnessand loss. While inthe past sectionsof the relationshipthe lightingwill be verybrightand
neutral to convey a mood of happiness and reflect the good times of the relationship.
