Lighting
1.
2. Typical Lighting
O The typical lighting of music videos is usually a
combination of natural and stage lighting such as
bright lights or coloured beams. The lighting
always depends on the location and genre of the
artist, as if the shots are outside they are more
likely to use natural lighting so that the scenes look
realistic rather than staged. If there is performance
such as dancing, the lights usually are more
creative, and in our music video we developed this
convention by experimenting with different
coloured spot lights against a blank white screen,
so that it provided a shadow either side of the
dancer, making the shots look more professional
and quirky for the alternative genre of the artist.
3. Performance Lighting
O
These are print screens from our music video of the performance pieces of
Georgina dancing, and the lighting was created by using professional stage
lights against a blank white screen, which created the shadows which proved
to be effective and appreciated by some audience feedback.
4. Our Lighting Choices
O As most of our shots were filmed outside,
we decided to keep the lighting natural so
that they fitted with typical conventions of
music videos, however we challenged this
convention by editing the lighting on the
editing stages by adjusting the brightness
so that certain shots such as her in Toton
Park, looked brighter and therefore looked
like they were in the Summer
6. Comparison to Existing Media
O Lana Del Rey typically films herself singing against a
blank wall in a room in a house such as in the music
video ‘Video Games’ to make the video appear to be
more personal, and the lighting is often natural to the
room, yet has a vintage effect to suit the genre. When
we filmed the singing shots for our music video, we did
some close ups against a white wall and the lighting
gave the same effect as Lana Del Rey’s, which well
suited the genre we were creating the video for, so we
did not change the lighting for this. As we filmed her
singing in two different rooms, one of the walls was more
cream than white, so we edited the lighting to make it
seem brighter and closer to white. This was challenging
the convention of Lana Del Rey’s usual performance
lighting as we didn’t leave it natural lighting.
