The document describes revisions made to a storyboard draft for a music video about Johnny Cash's song "Redemption Song". The initial draft used sticky notes to lay out scenes, which were then refined. Shots of the church interior and exterior were kept to set the biblical tone. Additional shots of a congregation and grave were added. Later shots portray Johnny at different ages, linking his past actions to the song's lyrics about karma. The final draft incorporates more shots and variations to portray continuity between actors and tell Johnny's story through the changes in his life.
2. • Our first draft of our storyboard consisted of A5 piece of paper that we stuck sticky notes
to in order to create our first draft. A picture of our first draft is shown below. We used
sticky notes as this enabled us to change the order of events and remove scenes we
thought un-necessary
3. • In the first few frames we decided to use the exterior and
interior of the church in order to get a feel and a connection
with the song title. This is done to connote the biblical
elements of the song as well as presenting the image of
remorse in the audiences head. This is mostly un-changed
from the original draft, however we have introduced the
congregation earlier as it matches with the song. We also
decided to use a low angle shot of a grave and a low tracking
shot of a congregation in order to represent the typical
church life and how the church can be a place of sadness and
happiness.
• For the next two frames we decided to use a long shot of the
church doors slamming this to signify that he has left is
embarking on his journey through his life. This will be done
using a high angle mimicking that of God looking down on
Johnny. It can also present him to be small and insignificant
compared to the world. This has changed from the draft
which had a close up of his feet walking, this don’t because
we felt it was important to present Johnny's sadness from the
beginning.
4. • The following two shots we decided to use were
mainly of Jonny walking towards the camera, it
would be a steady shot in order to get a feel of
Johnny's attitude and portray his sadness. The
long/medium shots done at eye-line match help
give him a human from in which the audience can
identify with, this is unchanged from the draft.
• The next two frames are different from the draft,
shot 8 is the same as shot 2 (congregation
stomping and clapping to the beat of the song).
This to connote the slow, repetitive monotony of
life. The next shot will be a tracking shot of Johnny
from behind just before his reminisces on a gang
attack he was involved with during the late 1940s
from when he was younger. This is to highlight the
negatives with in Cash’s life and emphasise the
Karma within the lyrics of the song. We haven’t
changed this from the draft.
5. • The following two shots portray Johnny as his
younger self, the first will be a wide mid shot, this
helps show the two having a scuffle this is
unchanged from the draft as it’s a key part to the
video and its narrative.
• We then see a Dutch tilt of the church which
helps connote the biblical lyrics of the song, we
used a Dutch tilt as this will help break up any
monotony. This is different from the draft as we
felt that it was going to be too boring without.
We also have a POV of him walking thus putting
the audience in his shoes. Lastly we will be re-
using the shot of the audience stomping and
clapping to help signify the wearisomeness of life.
6. • We will be using inside shots of the church yet
again to connote the bibliography immersed in the
song. We will be using Dutch tilts and tracks to
allow for a more engaging picture. This is changed
from the draft, we feel this will create a more
interesting image.
• Following this will be a long steady shot of Johnny
walking, this will show him to be old an withered.
The tracking will help bring the audience along
with him and encompass them within his story.
• The next two shots are of a younger Cash arguing
with his girlfriend. First an over the shoulder shows
her trying to be loving, this can show her emotion
to the audience. Following this the close up of
Johnny slapping her, this will show his personal
anger to the audience. This is unchanged from the
draft as its key to the lyrics and narrative.
7. • The top three shots are variations of the draft,
we feel these will better portray the continuity
between actors. The steady shots will help
portray his emotions and depression. They will
have him in a church to relate him to the
biblical side and how he is regretting his
actions.
• The next shot will have the three actors in the
church, therefore showing to the audience that
they are the same person from different ages.
This will be done with a steady medium shot of
them in the church.
• Lastly the shot shows the individual Johnny's
turning over their hands revealing the crucifix
tying them together as the same person. This is
a deviation from the draft as we feel this would
better show them as the same person.
8. CONCLUSION
• The changes we made from our first draft to our final draft has changed drastically. For
example we have decided on using more shots instead of others and therefore it gives
us a variety of shots to play with when it comes to the editing stage. We have also
changed the length of the shots from our first draft to our second draft in order for the
music video to reach the correct time of 2 minutes and 50 seconds.
