Students today are digital natives who are comfortable using technology. Traditional classrooms do not meet the needs of these students. Instead, new learning environments should actively engage students through interaction, hands-on learning, collaboration, and developing skills for the future workforce like problem-solving, digital skills, and communication. Teachers' roles are to cultivate students' curiosity and facilitate their own understanding. New pedagogical approaches focus on phenomenon-based and playful learning through innovative methods, facilities, and inspiring learning spaces that motivate students and emphasize their engagement in the process.
Dr. Isa Jahnke is professor at University of Umeå and will present several examples of how teachers integrate iPads into their classrooms, as part of a larger study of Danish schools (K-9) in Odder, where all 2,000 pupils and around 180 teachers use iPads started in 2012. Classroom observations and interviews with teachers revealed the use of multiple apps and a focus on creativity, production, and collaboration. Her empirical studies explore key principles, a) new learning goals where more than one correct answer exists, b) focus on learning as a project using guided reflections, c) making learning visible in different products. Traditional course-based learning turns into learning expeditions.

Empowering active learning of higher education students through space, pedago...Mike KEPPELL
Learning spaces need to encompass formal teaching spaces, informal learning spaces and virtual learning and teaching spaces. The combination of space, pedagogy and technology needs to be seamlessly integrated to support 21st Century learning. Learning spaces must utilise new technology and flexibility to enable active learning and meet student expectations and accommodate different teaching approaches. In this session, Professor Mike Keppell will reflect on different institutional approaches in addressing student learning by choreographing space, technology and pedagogy to achieve Institutional goals. Professor Keppell is an internationally respected academic and has held leadership roles across six universities. In this session he will to discuss his experience in transformational teaching and learning spaces that require the blend of technological tools and pedagogical practices to meet teacher and learner expectations. Case studies from different universities will be presented in the points below:

Assuring Best Practice in Learning and Teaching: Priorities for Institutions, Teachers and Learners in a Connected World
This presentation will focus on learning and teaching in a connected world within the Higher Education context. Knowledge is now co-created, disseminated via networks, and personalised. It has moved from being described as “explaining some part of the world” and “used in some type of action” to involving ecologies and networks (Siemens, 2006, p. vi). The presentation will focus on:
• How learning and teaching has changed in a connected world
o Active learning
o Learning spaces
o Central role of technology
• Innovative teaching in a connected world
o Blended learning
o Authentic assessment
o Professional development
• The knowledge, skills and attitudes teachers need to thrive in a connected world
o Digital fluency
o Seamless teaching
o Assuring best practice in technology-enhanced environments
o Technology affordances
o Scholarship
o Learning analytics
• The knowledge, skills and attitudes learners need to thrive in a connected world
o Learners will need a toolkit encompassing digital literacies, seamless learning, self-regulated learning, learning-oriented assessment, lifelong learning, and flexible learning pathways. This toolkit will enable the learner to tackle the complexities of the learning landscape that is becoming increasingly digital, connected, and ambiguous.
It contains what one would expect in a Student-centered learning(SCL), a comparison on traditional classroom and SCL ckassrooms and how ICT is used to supplement SCL

Code your own Game: the Case of Children with Hearing ImpairmentsLetizia Jaccheri
To be presented at http://icec2014.info/ International Conference on Entertainment Computing
It is well known in the computer science community that is important
to encourage children to acquire coding skills and become creators of their own
experiences and not only mere game consumers. Different children have different
needs when approaching coding and making activities. Specifically, Deaf
and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children, even when provided with accessible visual
translations through sign language interpreters or real-time captions, need
customized support. In our approach we have designed, implemented, and evaluated
a workshop program of 12 children total, with the final goal of exploring
and improving the design of appropriate workshops using the current learning
environments. This paper presents an initial exploratory evaluation of a coding
experience for children with hearing impairments and the development of a set
of guidelines for improving the teaching of coding to children with DHH difficulties.
An initial set of best practices was first developed through a focus group
with experts; and afterwards, by employing content analysis, a revised set of
guidelines was obtained. The results should be useful for special education
teachers, curriculum designers and developers for K-12 education environments
for DHH. Pictures Kai Torgeir Dragland

School is the most infallible institution that shapes and moulds a child's personality and prepares them to socialise, develop life skills, and educate. One remembers how learning used to be earlier at school. However, it has taken a 360-degree turn in the present epoch. The curriculum is theme-based, and thematic concepts taught in class integrate different subjects. International Schools focus on the overall personality development of children coupled with knowledge

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. Children and students at schools are digital natives
Students are equipped with
computers,Internet access, iPods,
and smartphones.
They actively use new devices.
Students are social networkers.
Students like to work on their own,
but they also like to work in
collaboration with others.
3. Traditional classrooms
So young students - these digital
natives- should not be met with
traditional classroom environments,
where students are expected to sit at
desks, push a pencil or pen, and do
exercises on worksheets.
“
4. How do students learn best?
Students
- actively engaged
- oriented on task or problem
- interact with others
- develop working skills
- take charge of learning
5. Skills to be learned
- Learning to learn skills
- Working skills
- Cultural literacy skills
- Interaction skills
- Expression skills
- Multi-literacy skills
- Digital competence skills
- Participation skills
- Responsibility of own learning
6. Knowledge and skills students need for future jobs
good basic skills
thinking and problem-solving skills
digital and technology skills
communication & interpersonal skills
self-directional & -assessment skills
7. Teachers’ job as a modern profession
Part of teachers’ modern profession
- is to train students to be
intellectually curious and to
create their own understanding
of a topic.
Teachers’ collaboration is crucial for
a modern way of working.
9. New classrooms and pedagogy to motivate students
Organize the setting for learning
(grouping according to topics of
learning) = learning design
Create variety of classroom settings
Use outside of school locations
Decorate the walls with learning
materials
Use audio, visual, digital technologies
10. Phenomenon based learning method
Finnish Core Curriculum 2016
Teachers start learning units by
introducing students to a realistic,
real-world topic that both engages
their interest and generates a list of
information students need to know.
Projects are designed to tackle
complex problems, requiring critical
thinking.
11. Innovative Learning methods in New School Facilities
To use methods based on research
- how students choose to learn
- what motivates them
- what is meaningful learning
Methods and facilities can more
emphasis to student’ engagement in
the learning process.
Playful learning!
12. Creating inspiring environments
Garden of learning
- inspiring
- caring
- interacting
- a joyful learning space
Rethinking what should be improved
and starting with step by step
changes.
13. Ethos of new learning environments
What are the social-emotional
dimensions of the learning
environment?
Nurturing the joy of learning so that
every child can discover his interests,
grow his passions, and love what he
is doing.
It is important to encourage students’
natural curiosity and interaction with
each others.
14. The Finnish National Core Curriculum for Early Childhood
Education and Care 2017
A personal early childhood education
plan is drawn up for each child.
- the child's opinions and wishes
must be asked when planning
education and care
- the child's parents must be
allowed to take part in the
planning process.
15. Could we ask also the children what is the best place and
best way you learn?
