Enterprises can survive digital disruption as well as grow revenue, improve profitability and increase market valuation — if they start rethinking what they do.
Digital transformation. It’s the use of technology to create a better customer experience, improve products and services, and increase the effectiveness of business operations. But it really means what your enterprise must do to adapt and thrive.
Today’s smaller, emerging companies are born digital. They can — and do — change quickly to answer consumer demand or a competitive offering. Larger, mature enterprises must start with a shift in strategy, because all industries will be changed or already have been changed by digital transformation. Many, like news media and publishers, music, video and retail have been or significantly disrupted. Up next: financial services, healthcare manufacturing, insurance, legal, education, utilities and energy. The good news? No industry has been or will be completely upended.
The first step is to recognize that disruption does not have to be a mass-extinction event. Enterprises can survive as well as grow revenue, improve profitability and increase market valuation. Here’s how to start rethinking what you do.

Digital transformation reshapes every aspect of a business. As digital technology continues to evolve, I believe that successful digital transformation will require careful collaboration, thoughtful planning, and the inclusion of every department.
During recent years, we’ve seen shifts in how traditional leadership roles operate, as silos break down and the scopes of various roles widen and change. Digital transformation has morphed from a trend to a central component of modern business strategy.

Digital transformation (DX) is shaping the future of business. While it can mean different things to different leaders, DX is about migrating from on-premises and labor-based models to the cloud, then complementing migration with cloud capabilities and agility. But to stop there would miss the full potential of using the cloud to enable DX.
The potential of DX is the sum of its parts: “digital” and “transformation.” Explored in isolation, we’re limited to either the constant pursuit and implementation of new technologies that enhance capabilities or a focus on change to modernize and become more efficient and innovative. Combined, they represent the future of business, how it operates, how it serves customers and employees, and how it adapts to industry evolution.
DX is continuous, never ends, and never a “won and done” series of checked boxes. DX is how organizations continually respond to disruptive events, trends, and technologies – beyond IT. The most effective partners in a DX journey explore existing states and capabilities within, benchmark those results against industry best practices and customer needs, and apply those insights to a strategic digital transformation plan of their own.

Digital transformation sweet spot: Business operationsMarcel Santilli

Your enterprise can digitally transform by gaining insights from your data to improve the experience for your customers.
Enterprises need to make over all aspects of their business, because today’s customers expect frictionless experiences — and because new competitors launched with the latest technologies can change and respond to customers faster than mature companies.
Start with the fact that your enterprise has valuable assets that start-ups don’t — your customers. Fostering loyalty among these customers requires improving their interaction with not only your products and services, but also sales, billing, support and shipping operations. Successful companies count on digital technologies to transform the total customer experience. As consumers, we’ve come to expect digitally enabled products as the new normal. But what’s the next step for your enterprise? Find ways to translate into their business lives what people love and expect as consumers.
Enterprises can learn from the digital leaders who look for ways that apps and data can be added to products to create new value over time. Digital leaders use what they learn from the data to reshape core operations to drive the enterprise forward. What’s considered a core operation varies from industry to industry, but the common characteristic is that core operations make up a sizable portion of the enterprise budget. Gaining even a modest amount of efficiency through digital transformation can significantly impact the bottom line. Data also can be used to predict mechanical failure and to schedule preventive maintenance to avoid business disruptions.
Digital transformation begins with data. So how can your enterprise gain insights from your data to improve the experience for your customers?

The digital revolution is one of the most disruptive forces now at work in the business world. Transformation in response to this force requires most companies to rethink what digital really means. It is no longer sufficient to think in terms of web sites and other digital assets. Similarly, evolution is now so much more than focusing on managing discrete changes that a particular technical innovation may require, the speed of change requires a far more fluid and dynamic mode of management. This session will look at some of the heroes of the digital age and the key factors that enhance or hamper an organisations ability to rise to the challenge of a constantly evolving business environment.

Digital technologies allow organizations to reinvent themselves – transforming the core of the business and finding and exploiting new sources of value. However, many organizations are struggling to reinvent themselves because they run up against a significant barrier – culture. Our research shows that culture is the number 1 barrier to digital transformation.
This edition of the Digital Transformation Review focuses on this critical, but neglected, topic:
How are large and traditional organizations tackling the thorny issue of digital culture?
What do digital-native firms do differently when it comes to digital culture?
What advice do leading academics have for organizations attempting to get digital culture change right?
We share the insights of key leaders and experts on this topic, representing the views of traditional companies, academia, and the Silicon Valley. We also outline Capgeminis’ point of view on how organizations can close the growing employee-leadership gap in digital culture, drawing on an extensive global survey.

Retail companies have quite some challenges with the way the world is (rapidly) changing due to digitization. That’s why Belgian retailer Torfs & Duval Union Consulting have worked together to set up a strategy to master the digital transformation of Torfs.
In the following case study, we discuss the current market situation and disruptive trends in retail based on our seven Drivers of Transformation.
It’s fundamental to understand what is going on at the moment in the retail industry, where it is going and identify critical threats when constructing a digital strategy towards the future.

We've analyzed tons of disruptive players when we were writing our book on Digital Transformation. We discovered 7 similarities and call them "The 7 Metaphors of Digital Disruption". We saw that all the disruptors score high on these drivers of transformation while traditional players have trouble with these metaphors. The new players are attacking you on every level.
How can you defend your business from these new players in your market? You should learn how they operate and try to implement (elements of) the business models of disruptive companies.
We've made a presentation that guides you through ten business models of hyper disruptors that we found inspiring. We hope you do too. Please let us know your thoughts about it!

The traditional idea of the agency is a relic. The days of clients willing to spend their marketing budget on a "let's throw some creative ideas at the wall and see what sticks" strategy are long gone. Digital has changed the landscape. Clients want predictable and measurable results. And they should. But agencies have been slow to adopt Digital. And by that, I don't mean slow to adopt digital technologies (tactics and executions). I mean slow to adopt the digital culture (collaboration, strategy and planning). And this, friends, is where the tale begins.
Many organisations are struggling to implement and drive their digital transformations. Only about 30% of digital transformations efforts actually succeed. Mostly because going digital is a complex process with many internal and external pressures. Organisations need to understand what transformations entails, avoid the pitfalls and and carefully consider each facet of digital transformation. Only then can they turn ambition into achievement. In this playbook, we have identified the nine traits of companies that win at digital transformation. We will see what defined their success and how they achieved it. And we will discuss how we can help companies reach their digital transformations goals.
You’ve seen the future for your organisation and it's unquestionably digital. But then the questions start: Who goes on the journey? How do you lead them along? What direction? How fast? What’s the path? Is the journey the same for everyone throughout the business?
Embarking on a Digital Transformation (DT) strategy can seem daunting enough. But when you apply that strategy to large teams, the numerous complexities and variables can make the whole project appear just too exhausting a proposition to even bother taking the first step, let alone all those steps that must inevitably follow if it is to succeed.
So how do you bring your team on the journey?

5. „what?“
Digital (Business)Transformation is both megatrendand
buzzword. Companiesneed to change their business model and
speed-up serving consumers touchpoints. Digital technologies
empower customers like never before, transformingtheir
relationshipwith brands and products. So, it is a must for you to
enhance digital customer experience and get more competence in
agile and efficient digital operational excellence.
But why do so many initiativesand dt projects fail? 13 theses try
to give a brief understanding about the pain-points and tripping
hazards in typical digital transformation projects.
#digitalfailure
6. „don´t think – just do the digitalchange.“
dt is neither a corporate marketingbranding design vision-and-
values-issue nor a buzzword-driven-self-extracting-process. It is
hard work on building new business models for your company. It
is not only a change of products and services, but an integrated
renewal of mindset within your company.
Go for it.
#changeyourmind
7. „dt means re-positioning your company
as technology leader.“
nope. dt means to break down walls and turn your company into a
disruptive one. You may use digital technologiesto get in contact
with your audience and get into a dialogue with your stakeholder,
but digital transformation doesnot mean to put all your
businesses into web.
#leadingtechnologies
8. „we do not need a plan.“
the short version to underline this (wrong) understanding is called
„iterative, agile development“: just start with a basic idea, no
deeper understanding and without any concept. the rest is done
by scrum or kanban. It is only a pity that the real worldis more
than an it-developer-project. What you need is a strategy based
on vision, goals and operations (at this point you can use agile
concepts like scrum or kanban to get the strategy realised).
#agile
9. „Let´s just copy AGFEA*“
copycats will fail in dt projects, just because the development is
much too fast. you cannot catch up. so, look at innovative
startups, small disruptive companies or ask yourself, where
amazon, google & co. will stay in 2, 3 years. Based on these
impressions you can probably fetch new ideas and transform
your own business.
*) (amazon, google, facebook, ebay, apple)
#innovationbystartups
10. „dt is no questionof technology.“
the answer: NO. Love your nerd! Even if strategy and new
business models have most impact on your renewal process, you
need someone to get the shit done on an amazing high level. the
next generationcomputer-freaks,small startups build your
ressource for fast moving development and disruptive ideas on
high level. digital natives will rule the future. as an employee or
your client.
#loveyournerd
11. „Poor customer experiences can lead to
deflated revenue and loyalty.“
Do you really take care about your customer experience? Or is it
just hot air? 1/3 of all customers criticise long wait times or poor
response times as the top reason for Customer Experience failure.
Another reason for displeased customers are poorly trained or
unknowledgeable service-representativeswho don't have the
power to rectify a situation. Incomplete, conflicting and inaccurate
information are a reason for failure, too. Learning: You need to
adjust and speed-up your service-process, because digital
transformation means more contact, more touchpoints and more
responsibilitywith/for your clients.
#userexperience
13. „Big Data will rock it.“
I´am sorry: Big Data is bullshit. Big Data is somethingeveryone
likes. Big Data seems to be the leading way to get a successfull
transformation process. But that´s not working! Big Data is not
the key to transform your company. It is only a useful instrument
to get a little bit more understanding on your clients needs. The
reason: Big Data is much too often a question of databases and
storage. The truth is: we want to learn more about our clients and
stakeholders. So, let´s think about questions and answers. Big,
relevant questions, interesting, disruptive answers. Storage is
boring. Go out and organize „big answers conferences“ with your
stakeholder.
#bigdata
14. „dt starts with new hard/software.“
Digital transformation influences everything. and everybody.
everything what can be digitized will be digitized in the near
future. The main critical success factors are digital thinking, digital
communication, digital products and digital marketing. But this is a
question of creativity, innovation and strategy. Not a question of
new computersystems, fast servers, databases and storage.
#digitalprocess
15. „dt kills our business.“
answer: it is in your hand. accept dt as a chance. Try to transform
your analog into digital business, invent new products and
services and analyze your customers needs. involve your
stakeholder,be thoughtful and brave. and allow having fun within
the process, e.g. by using gamification methods. then you will
succeed.
16. „no culture of change.“
if your company has not yet learned to change, to renew its own
thinking, to throw old ideas over board, it might be very difficult
to find followers in your company and get acceptance. turn your
company into an agile, change-loving, disruptively-thinking, team-
orientedorganisation. You need a culture of progressivethinking.
then you will succeed.
#changeandrenewal
17. „no willingness for creative destruction.“
If you are not willing to challenge you own business in order to
introduce new, increasing business models, your are done. All big
players of the digital economy re-invent their business day by day,
even if they harm the sales of existing products with good market
penetration. disruption rocks! Apple´s iPhone has negative
impacts on the sales of iPod, the iPad decreases sales of their own
notebooks. But: If it is not your company substitute your own
products, it will probably be your competitor.
#disruptivethinking
18. „To fail is the end.“
No, not at all. Many a time, shipwreck is the beginning of a much
bigger thing. To fail means to get new experience and new ideas.
Elon Musk fails several times before having remarkable success
with paypal and Tesla. To fail is the most important asset for
innovation and great inventions. dt comes along with agile, fast,
barely projectable impacts. The competitionis murderous. So,
allow, accept failure. nothing is a mistake. there´s no win and no
fail. there´s only MAKE. Don´t try to reduce the amount of your
flops. failure is ok, it is part of the business. try to fail better, more
elegant, faster, more terrific.
#elegantfailure
19. „we can fix dt with own ressources.“
Do you really think? Then I am wondering why you haven´t
startet yet? dt is the chance to benefit from new experiences from
the younger generation, digital natives, small, innovative startups.
They grow-up with digital technologies, the usage of digital
devices and platforms is an integral part of their lifestyle. You
cannot copy these kinds of thinking, acting, living. But you can
learn from them and understand how they use digital technologies
to organize their life, to buy things and share information and
cultivate their networks.
#digitalfitness
21. Build up your own digitaltransformation
strategy and walk through the three level
of digitale business transformation:
Level I: Increase digital competence. In your own company. And
togehter with your clients.
Level 2: Use digital technologiesand platforms, just to improve
your business. And to learn. Give your employeesand your
stakeholders the opportunity to „taste“ different channels and
platforms.
Level 3: Transform your business. Develop new products and
services and connect them with the web. Change your business
model. Think about services for the sharing-economy, new
outstanding after-sales services or mobile offers.
