Digital radiography using amorphous silicon (a-Si) flat panel detectors provides benefits over film radiography such as faster inspection times, reduced costs, and improved image quality. Key metrics for evaluating image quality are the detective quantum efficiency (DQE), which measures the signal-to-noise ratio performance of the detector, and the modulation transfer function (MTF), which measures spatial resolution. While a high MTF is desirable, a detector's DQE is more important, as it quantifies the ability to produce high quality images using lower radiation doses. Performance studies show that a-Si flat panel detectors can achieve quantum limited noise performance, wide dynamic ranges, high spatial resolution, and 2-1 sensitivity over a range of

Virtual Retinal Display: their falling cost and rising performanceJeffrey Funk
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze the increasing economic feasibility of virtual retinal displays. These displays focus light on a person’s retina using LEDs, digital micro-mirrors and lenses, which are all encased in a head-set about the size of glasses. They enable high resolution 3D video images with a large field of view that are far superior to existing displays. Rapid improvements in LEDs and digital micro-mirrors (one type of MEMS) are enabling these displays to experience rapid reductions in cost and improvements in performance.
Vieworks' TDI line scan cameras are based on new innovative “hybrid” sensor technology. The sensors combine CMOS and CCD. The base sensor has is a classic CMOS structure with much faster readout speeds and lower power consumption. However the sensors use CCD photo cells to capture the images and CCD technology still offers higher dynamic range and better image quality. In addition, the integration and transfer of stages is done by moving charge in CCDs, making this process virtually noiseless. The TDI line scan cameras based on these new hybrid imaging sensors allows image captures as fast as 250 kHz line rates with up to 256 stages. They are designed for applications where faster line rates and higher sensitivity are critical.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

MTF indicates fraction of signal that will be seen in image.
Noise
MTF measured under noiseless conditions.
MTF transfers noise in addition to signal.

9. Image Quality Metric for Digital Systems
•
Quantum and electronic noise are unavoidable in digital imaging chain.
•
SNR can vary widely across systems
•
High SNR is key to better inspection power
•
To increase SNR often the only way is to increase radiation dose,
unacceptable trade-off
•
Achieving high SNR at lower dose: better imaging system
Traditional gauge used for quantifying image
quality cannot be used as a stand alone metric.
