The document summarizes a student's creation of a digitalized digipak for an imaginary Avicii album. The student conducted research on Avicii's album designs and chose to use a grayscale color scheme with purple and green accents to be original. Key elements like the Ministry of Sound label, barcode, copyright information, and Avicii logos were included to make it seem realistic. Mountains, forests, and a quote from Avicii were used throughout the cover art to convey themes of inspiration and adventure. The student was happy with their creation but felt it could better tie into the EDM genre with more bright colors.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. My CD Disc:
To help develop and create a successful and appealing CD disc design. I researched the original ‘Avicii’ CD’S and cases on sale today. This
helped me understand the main codes and conventions the genre uses but also Avicii Himself. After doing hours of intensive research, I found
out that in every Avicii digipak on sale today contains the codes of bright colours. This was mainly done as the genre ‘EDM’ is often linked to
dance music which is played in clubs around the world with differing colours of lighting. In order to be original, I decided to contradict the
user of colours and stick to only two colours much like the rock genre does. Examples of this could be AC/DC where they only used two
colours the majority of the time on there digipaks. I wanted only two colours to ensure that my own creations wouldn’t look scruffy, caught
my target audiences eye and also attracted a new, niche target audience.
To make my Digipak as real as possible, I included the official record label Avicii uses. This is often the
record label ‘Ministry of Sound’. Created in 1991, the Ministry of Sound can be heavily regarded as the
most successful record label to date. Artists such as Lady Gaga, Sigala and DJ Fresh have all worked with
this record label owned currently by Sony Music UK. To also make this seem as real as possible, I created
some specific information to be placed below. Due to not being able to find what this is actually about on
a real DISC and what it actually says, I came up with my own CD identification which can be seen as ‘2017
Version A – Ministry of sound O5TP5789087A4RT12’. I placed this below the record label as I deemed it
the most suitable location for such information.
As seen on my research page, I did plenty of research focusing on the fonts used in the genre and also the fonts
Tim Bergling uses himself on his Digipaks. When researching Avicii’s logos, I found it near to impossible to find out
what font he actually uses for his artsist name. So to overcome such a problem, I just decided to find a PNG of his
official font on google and use that to make sure people recognise it as one of his albums.
Also, I chose the name ‘FORM’ for my album name in a paint brush font similar to the one Avicii used on his
official ‘TRUE’ album. I went for this type of font as I believed it was following the general stereotypes of Avicii’s
albums.

Front and Back Cover
5. Layout
The layout of my front cover digipak can be seen as very
different to Avicii’s official album covers. His official album
covers usually have a lot more colour, a main image of
something like a building or an individual and only one logo.
I decided to steer away from these stereotypes as I wanted
to be original with my creation. I believe the majority of
Avicii’s songs contain a hidden message of adventure and
inspiration so I therefore wanted to show this in my Digipak
designs. Due to the adventurous vibe I'm wanting to portray,
I created mountains on the tool known as paint. I drew an
outline of mountains and then shaded various areas to make
it look fairly realistic. The original version of the mountains I
created were in black so I therefore had to change the
colour. To fit into the stereotypes of the genre, I changed the
outline and shading to a shade of blue via the PowerPoint
tools available. The outcome of the mountains can be seen
on the front cover of my digipak.
To also fill up such a big area, I decided to take a picture of
the woodlands, remove the background and turn it to
greyscale to fit in with the colour of the fonts and logos. This
was then added to the bottom of each cover to have a
general theme running throughout.
My Digipak Front and Back Cover:
6. Barcode
As you can clearly see, the barcode is located
on the top left of the back cover which is
therefore going against its stereotypical
location. The reason I did this is because I
didn’t want it to interrupt the grey silhouette
of the forest located at the bottom of every
cover. The barcode has to be fairly big and if
it was located at the bottom right of the back
cover, it would cover part of the silhouette
which would therefore make it look tacky. To
avoid any tackiness, I placed it on the top left
of the cover so it would not intervene in any
of the information, pictures of logos seen.
After doing research, I found that genres
such as pop usually have the barcode located
somewhere on the top so decided I would
place it there for originality in the genre.
Logos
Located at both the top right, and
bottom left is a variety of different logos.
These include the record label logo of
‘Ministry of Sound’, ‘Compact Disc’ logo
and also the ‘Copyright’ logo. I needed to
include these as they are conventional
on every album back cover to exist. This
therefore stops anyone using the song
without permission from the artist or
record label and gives them both legal
rights with the album and songs
included. To add a sense of
professionalism and realism to the cover,
I made sure these were added to help it
move away from an amateur creation to
something that may actually have the
potential to be sold on the market today.

8. Colour Choices
As seen underlining the Official Avicii logos and album name, there are two different
colours used compared to the rest of the colour scheme throughout the whole
album design. I figured that even though I wanted to be original, I still needed to add
a little bit of bright colour to tie in the ‘EDM’ genre. To do this, I created three basic
rectangles, two the same size, and placed them underneath the logos and name of
the album. I chose purple and green as I believed they worked best together with
the colours I had available to use.
The greyscale theme also carried on through to the inside cover as the forest
silhouette is again used. Even though I believed that the forest silhouette worked
nicely, I needed to change things up a little as the theorist Steve Neale stated that
“mere repetitions wouldn’t attract an audience”. So to avoid any repetitions, I
decided to add a cliff or hill edge with a male figure looking out into the distance at
the mountains and the forest below.
Also, you can see a quote from Avicii himself which I found online in a recent
interview. I wanted to include this as I believed this helped add a hint of inspiration
to the design as this quote shows what Avicii’s inspiration behind music is. This also
adds a vibe of professionalism to it as its not just one main image. Personally, I
believe just one main image on the inside cover makes albums look rather amateur
and also a hint of laziness therefore I used a quote from Tim Bergling.
My Digipak Inside Cover:
9. Overall:
Overall, I am very happy with my creation as I believe it contains the
general codes and conventions of the genre but also shows my originality
and the message I was wanting to portray. There are many general themes
shown throughout which I believe is the most successful aspect of my
digitalized digipak.
If I was to redo this, I would 100% try to add more bright colours to it to
help tie the genre in even more. This would then make the it stand out
even more and maybe even also attract the new niche target audience I
want to attract. The reason behind the new audience is because I believe
Avicii has recently been trying to reach out to a new niche target audience
as a few of his late 2017 music videos have a Sci-Fi feel to them.
