BETWEEN POP
AND ROCK
MUSIC
VIDEOS
Codes and
Convention

ups.
• The costume is usually very extreme or
very plain.

• Lots of long shots, close ups and
establishing shots.
• Often wear black or neutral coloured
clothes.
• Often performance music videos.
• Props are usually musical instruments.
• The lights are usually spotlights or
coloured lights.
Difference
between the
two
• Pop music focuses on vocals and beat while rock
focuses mainly on instruments like bass and guitar.
• Pop music’s basic elements have not evolved much like
rock which has evolved into sub genres.
• Rock identifies with a particular subculture while pop
tends to cut across audiences.
• Rock music is made often by a group each playing a
particular instrument whereas pop can be by a single
artist or a group of singers.
What genre
I have
chosen
• I have decided that my music video will
be a rock music video. I feel that the
conventions of this genre will better fit
the story of my music video.
• The music for my music video is a song
sung by two people who each play a
different musical instrument and sing.
This better fits the rock genre.
