1. What is Genre?
A music genre is a category that identifies a piece of music as
belonging to a shared tradition or set of conventions. There
are many different genres of music, which include Pop, Rock,
Hip-Hop.
Pop – Common conventions in a pop music are usually the
band members wearing modern clothing. The clothing is
normally bright as this goes with the upbeat music. In pop
music videos, shots are edited to keep pace with the music
video. If a song is upbeat, shots will be shorter and will
appear quicker. In pop music videos, the lighting is high key
so that it matches the desired feel of the song.
Rock – In rock music videos, there tends to be close-ups and
long shots used. The close-ups are used to show emotion
used in the song and the long shots are used to show the
group in its entirety. The rock genre uses low key lighting as
it is seen as quite dark music.
Hip-Hop – Hip-Hop videos are usually filmed in parties or
clubs. They usually show expensive cars or clothing and use
long shots to this. Hip-Hop music videos do not tend to
follow a storyline but follow conventions of their genre.
There is usually high key lighting in hip-hop music videos as
the music can be upbeat.
