Stereotypical conventions
of rock music
 Rock videos often include a lot of close-ups people and
the instruments being used during performances.
Instruments include those such as the guitar or the
drum. There are lots of fast cuts between shots and the
shots don't usually last longer than 3 seconds max.
 Rock videos often are performance based and just show
the group or artist performing in front of an audience
for example but some also have linear narratives that
tell a story. Performance based narratives are most
popular. Combining performance and linear based
narratives is also often common.
 Costume is important with in the music video for rock.
The characters with in the rock music videos are often
quite gothic or alternative. Characters are often seen in
dark clothing, with long, scruffy hair, piercings and
tattoos etc. These things make the artists or characters
with in the music video look rebellious and this is
stereotypical with in the rock genre. Make up is also
worn even by the men such as eyeliner and this is quite
unusual for a male as males don't often wear make up so
this gives the artists an alternative look.
 Rock music videos seem to have a lower saturation and
darker scenes compared to other music videos such as
those in pop music. The lighting is also decided on the
theme of the song which varies.
 What the band or individual is inspired by is often the
meaning for the lyrics within the particular song and the
setting in the music video. Large open stages or large
crowds are often popular with rock.
 Props used in rock music videos are mainly the
instruments which the band or individual is playing.
Guitars and drums are most common.
The future of rock music
 In the future I see rock music videos becoming less
stereotypical, for example, they will have more
narrative storylines within the video rather than a
performance based video.
 If I was to make a rock music video I would adhere to
the stereotype by having parts of the music video
performance based but to subvert the stereotypical rock
music video I would also put in some sort of storyline to
make the music video more unique but also relate it to
the video to the song. I would also still use darker
colours and have a low saturation so that the music
video still suits the genre of music.
Choices made in rock
music videos
 The rock scene is often associated with things such as
sex, drugs, alcohol etc. Rock music is also seen to
associate itself with political activism, social attitudes
to race and is also seen as an expression of youth revolt
against adult consumerism and obedience.
