done so that the audience do not notice. It becomes a sequence of shots that look to be linked
together. This also includes Continuity Editing,180 degree rule, Match on action, Shot reverse
shot, Eye-line match, Cross cutting. A good example of a music video that uses continuity editing is
‘Wake Up’ by The Vamps. In this music video the camera moving round is cut out of the music
video so it goes from the front of the vamps to above their heads without showing the camera
moving around.
A montage is used to speed up the action. It includes a series of different shots linked together to
show a story. This is a very common editing technique used in music videos. A good example of a
music video that uses this type of editing is ‘Story of My Life’ by One Direction. In this music video
each member of One Direction shows a photo of when they were young and then now. Some
members have just grown and some have lost some of the people that were in the photo. This
shows each of them growing up.
This type of editing is when an image is suddenly replaced by another one. This is often used to
show a vital piece of the music video. A good example of a music video that uses this type of editing
is ‘Superhero’ by The Script. In this music video it cuts from The Script singing to the people that
are filming it to the people that are watching it. It helps to give the audience an insight into each
part of the music video.
This type of editing is when the video fades to another image or to black. This is most
commonly used at the beginning or end of the music video. Fade to black is one of the
most popular endings to a music video. An example of a music video that uses this type
of editing is ‘Treat You Better’ by Shawn Mendes. In this music video this type of editing
is used at the end of the music video. This signifies to people that it is the end of the
music video.
This type of editing is when one shot is replaced by another without it dissolving.
The second shot wipes away the other one. This can be in any direction. An example
of a music video that uses this type of editing is ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ by
Taylor Swift. In this music video this type of editing is used to change from one set
to another. This type of editing is used to mirror what the mirrors are doing behind
her.
This type of editing is when one scene or image gradually appears over another. This is a smooth
transition. A good example of a music video that uses this type of editing is ‘Smoke and Fire’ by
Sabrina Carpenter. In this music video this type of editing is used at the beginning of the music
video to help to set the scene. This type of editing is used with cut editing.
This type of editing is when the music video is edited in such as way to make it more
action packed and appealing to the audience. A good example of a music video that uses
this type of editing is ’See You Again’ by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. In this music
video this type of editing is used because the music video features a car race. This
makes the music video more exciting for the audience.
This type of editing is used to make the music video seem slow and calm. There are
little number of shots which are long to make the music video seem more realistic. This
can also be a down side because the longer the shot the more chance there is for there
to be a mistake. It also makes the audience feel calm but can also make them bored.
This type of editing emphasises emotions and show attention to detail. A good example
of a music video that uses this type of editing is ‘Too Much to Ask’ by Niall Horan. In
this music video this type of editing is sued to enhance the mood and atmosphere of the
music video.
This type of editing makes the music video seem normal and comfortable and
encourages the audience to watch the whole thing. The average number of shots and
cuts which are medium in time to make to seem more realistic and help the audience to
better relate to the music video because it seems more like real life. A good example of a
music video that uses this type of editing is ‘Castle on a Hill’ by Ed Sheeran. In this
music video this type of editing is used to make the audience fell comfortable. The song
is about Ed Sheeran growing up, this is an experience that everyone has had.
This type of editing is used to make the music video feel more intense, exciting and
thrilling. The footage is cut into lots of short bits which change very quickly ad very
often. This can make the audience feel uncomfortable, tense and exciting. It can be use
to create a mood and atmosphere for the music video. A good example of a music video
that uses this type of editing is ‘Treat You Better’ By Ed Sheeran. In this music video
this type of editing is used to make the audience feel uncomfortable. The fast paced
parts show someone who is seen to be the bad guy in the video.
This type of editing is used to show what happened before the music video was filmed.
This is often used to show a major event in someone's life or an event childhood. A good

this music video this type of editing is used to show Ed Sheeran as he is growing up.
This gives them an insight into his life before he was a singer.
