WHAT IS DIABETES TYPE 1?
Prof Dr Okan Bulent Yildiz

• With type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system attacks part
of its own pancreas. Scientists are not sure why. But the
immune system mistakenly sees the insulin-producing cells in
the pancreas as foreign, and destroys them
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afM10uGanMg
So our pancreas no longer works
properly...and does not produce
INSULIN
SCIENTISTS DON’T KNOW WHY...
It’s NOT because we ate too much
sugar!!
Type 1 diabetes is nobody’s fault..
Because our PANCREAS is no longer
working properly, we have to inject
ourselves every day with insulin or we
use a pump
This is what a pump looks like...
INSULIN controls the sugar levels
in our blood (for all of us)
Type 1 diabetics have to check
their blood sugar levels many times
each day....
Because it can go too high or too
low.....
When sugar is too high.....
When sugar is too low.....it can be very
serious and we need to eat something
sweet fast!
Type 1 diabetics can lead normal lives
just like everyone else!
3, 2, 1...Bungeeeeeeeeeee
There is no cure for TYPE 1 diabetes at
the moment....
• But scientists are working on it.....
HAPPY WDD 2014
• Please remember that TYPE 1 diabetes is
different to TYPE 2!

Diabetes is a huge and growing problem…

Diabetes is a huge and growing problem…
What is type 2 diabetes?
• If you have type 2 diabetes your body does
not use insulin properly. This is called insulin
resistance.
Why do I need to prevent and take care of
type 2 diabetes?
Can I prevent type 2 diabetes?
• YES! Usually, type 2 diabetes can be
prevented! It is DIFFERENT to type 1 diabetes
STAY ACTIVE!
DON’T BE A COUCH POTATO!
YOU NEED TO MOVE!
HAVE FUN!
EXERCISE!
MOVE WELL
EAT A HEALTHY DIET
"Eat your breakfast. It's the most
important meal of the day!" Why are
parents always saying that?
Eating a healthy breakfast:
• Helps to control appetite and blood sugar
• Decreases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
Skipping breakfast makes you put weight!
Imagine you're a car. After a long night
of sleeping, your fuel tank is empty.
Breakfast is the fuel that gets you
going so you can hit the road.
• Eating breakfast in the morning helps control your hunger, so you are less
likely to snack on fatty foods mid-morning or overeat at lunchtime.
• When you eat too many sugary foods, you can produce too much insulin,
so your body processes sugar more quickly.
• This leads to a 'crash' in your blood sugar levels which can make you crave
more food.
But regulating insulin levels by eating a
balanced breakfast helps control blood
sugar levels, making you less likely to
snack on fatty or sugar foods later in
the day
WHAT SHOULD YOU EAT?
Try not to eat foods high in CALORIES,
SUGAR AND FAT....
Those sort of foods will give you a
quick sugar high......
• AND THEN A LOW
INSTEAD; What Should You Eat?
Just like with other meals, try to eat a variety of
foods, including:
• Fruit
• Vegetables
• Grains (make at least half your grains whole
grains)
• Protein (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dry beans, nuts,
and seeds)
• Dairy products (low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese,
and yogurt)
A HEALTHY BREAKFAST.... 

BREAKFAST!
