Growing Awareness, Growing Support PollAchieve, Inc.
June 29, 2012 Continuing Achieve’s work to gauge the public's awareness of and support for the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and aligned common assessments, a national poll was commissioned in May 2012 to build on the results of Achieve’s August 2011 poll. In those 8-9 months, awareness among teachers on the CCSS and common assessments increased and their support also increased. The voting public continues to give high marks to the idea of having common standards and assessments. When given additional information about the CCSS and the related assessment, their support remains high. It will be crucial to maintain teacher and public enthusiasm for CCSS as they are implemented in thousands of schools across 46 states and the District of Columbia. AIS Exposed. New vulnerabilities and attacks. (HITB AMS 2014)Marco Balduzzi
AIS, Automatic Identification System, is a promoted standard and implementation for vessels traffic safety and monitoring. With more than 400,000 installations worldwide, AIS is currently a mandatory installation for commercial vessels and a de-facto equipment for leisure crafts. AIS is largely used in ports worldwide -- Rotterdam alone monitors over 700 AIS-enabled vessels each day, serving 32,000 seagoing and 87,000 inland vessels a year.
Back in October 2013, during HITB KUL, we showed that AIS is hardly broken, both at implementation and protocol level, and it suffers from severe vulnerabilities like spoofing and man-in-the-middle. In this talk, we extend our research by sharing with the audience several novel attacks that we recently discovered, for example how to extensively disable AIS communications or attack the software installed at back-end by port authorities. By doing so, we hope to raise the necessary awareness and lead the involved parties into calling for a more robust and secure AIS.

Collaborative evaLuation Of border Surveillance Technologies in maritime Environment bY pre-operational validation of innovativE solutions
CLOSEYE comes to life with the aim of providing the EU with an operational and technical framework that increases situational awareness and improves the reaction capability of authorities surveying the external borders of the EU.
As the first Pre-Operational Validation project in FP7 security theme, the Project pursued the validation of innovative services (improved detection though Passive Radar DVB-T and SAT Images, Enhanced Command and Control Functionalities and services, extended range cost-effective surveillance through MRI Aircraft integrating Videos and Tracks, SAT Communications) applicable to the surveillance of the EU Maritime Borders in real operational environment following the Common Application of Surveillance Tools concept, established by EUROSUR.
The project was divided into 2 Lots, the first of which managed by Leonardo through the “Union Temporal the Empresa” with INDRA. Results of the experimental campaigns are used to orient decision makers and agencies’ buyers in the procurement process to get cost effective solutions to manage Mediterranean borders.

Advanced Monitoring:
• Integrated Situational Awareness Picture,
• Early Warning on suspicious vessel behavior,
• Global coverage.
A step ahead on Maritime Intelligence
5. 5
Challenges on Maritime Surveillance
• Coherent Data Fusion: Data to Information paradigm
Data availability is not an issue anymore but:
Disparate sources (AIS, Radar, GPS, …) are not integrated on
centralized systems,
Intelligence services demand (early warning on threats,
anomalous behaviour detection);
• Reliable Intelligence Services
Increase awareness to reduce operational response times:
Need of comprehensive, cost-efficient tools to facilitate decision
making
6. 6
• Many disparate sources of
information not integrated,
• C2C coverage limitation,
• Lack of behaviour analysis,
• Only specialized operators can
asses,
• Lack of comprehensive tools for
decision makers.

Conclusion
• Behavioural analysis is essential technology on any
Maritime scenario to:
– Facilitate decision making,
– Enhance operational readiness and response times,
• This technology is already available
