Cultural Heritage as a Mean of Social Inclusion: Work in Progress in the Cult...Museums Computer Group

CultureLabs is an international project focusing on the role of culture and heritage in facilitating social inclusion. Wider and deeper community engagement in the heritage sector has been aided by digital technologies to engage communities who may feel disconnected from heritage institutions, such as migrants and refugees.
CultureLabs’ universities, heritage institutions, SMEs, and NGOs are developing a digital platform for facilitating participatory cultural projects with communities of migrants or refugees, and for sharing best practices.
Through pilots in three countries, the CultureLabs approach and technology will be developed and evaluated. The UK pilot is led by the People’s History Museum. As the UK approaches Brexit, PHM will engage communities in Greater Manchester to reflect on the theme of migration: they will meet, discuss, and explore what they have ‘More in Common’ and what it means to live in multicultural Britain. These events will lead to the co-production of an exhibition that reflects on the museum collection and the recently acquired Jo Cox memorial wall.
In the presentation, we will discuss how CultureLabs’ technology and pilots will create bridges between cultural institutions, migrants’ communities, and support communities to facilitate the design, execution and sharing of participatory projects for social inclusion.

"Let's marathon!" Why to motivate the reuse of audiovisual archivesMariana Salgado
This article presents the argument that archivists and media scholars need to take on new practices, such as organizing hackathons or marathons, to facilitate the creative re-use of archival material. With these practices they could support the outreach of local communities and understand the nuances of reusing archival content to contextualize their records. In order to sustain this claim, I present one case study in which a group of international writers and video makers join forces to re-use audiovisual archive material in Helsinki, Finland. I unfold the limitations and opportunities that a one-day event presented to artists, archivists and media scholars, while collaborating and creatively re-using audiovisual archival material. The discussion uncovers issues pertaining to the facilitation of creative re-use as means for integration, the multicultural representation of the archives, the development of media literacy in collaborative processes and the challenges in the practice of legally reusing archival material.

The presentation is interactive based on personal research multiple sources. It is meant to be moderated and leading from general to some more specific insights on sustainable networks in culture.
Core message - networks are essential for business, policy makers, creators because they maintain the innovation drive and the cross-over and spill-over effects. In particular the engagemnet of public and users in designing together policies, practices, production and distribution are the focus of regional COOPERATION.

Designing access to audiovisual cultural heritage. The case of the CarrotMariana Salgado
This paper presents the design of an application
for engagement with audiovisual digital cultural heritage in
the classroom, called the Carrot. The aim of this interactive
tool is to make online cultural heritage accessible and
understandable for students in different levels of education.
In relation to this work we pose two research questions: Why
do we need to develop tools for contextualization of
audiovisual cultural heritage? And: How do we design and
develop such tools? The preliminary answers to these
questions come from our experiences in the design process,
which deepened our understanding of a tool in the context of
the classroom. We then relate this to the digital humanities
project, EUscreenXL. Initial conclusions suggest that tools
for contextualization of audiovisual cultural heritage can
engage students with cultural heritage, develop digital media
literacy, and support contemporary didactics. These tools
need to be developed across platforms, using nonproprietary
software and involving a multidisciplinary
group of experts.

In this paper we seek to disentangle the reasons that limit collaborations between museums and universities. Our standpoint is that collaboration is desired by both organizations as it could lead to richer outcomes in the design and research of new technologies in museums. However, little attention is paid to how this kind of collaboration actually happens and how it could be enhanced. This is why our focus is on teamwork, especially in the particularities of the collaboration of external design-researchers and museum professionals. This paper examines the collaboration between a university and a museum, in a situation in which these institutions collaborate in the production of interactive artefacts for exhibition space. As in other cases, collaboration between museums and other institutions is not always easy: participants of collaborations have expectations and needs that are far from obvious to everyone. In this paper, we present a case study on a course on Public Space and Social Inclusion, organized by the Museum of Science in Trento (Italy) and the EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School. During the course, the participants developed a set of original ideas to explore possible ways for the museum to become a cultural hub, and to look into the role it can play for community building. This case study gave us the opportunity to delve deep into the dynamics of the interactions between museum and university partners involved in a collaborative process. We conducted and analysed interviews with university representatives and museum staff to discover how they experienced the collaboration and what they were expecting from it. Analysing these interviews, we observed the need to follow three principal elements for a successful collaboration. Partners have to start together a collaboration planning in advance their intention and moments for exchanging mutual feedback and systematically review the project. Partners should plan their collaboration in advance, explicating their expectations for the project and setting dates for exchanging mutual feedback to review the project systematically. Time management is crucial. It is important to make clear which deadlines are fixed and which flexible, when it is time for deep reflection and when there’s a need for hurried action. In general, the participants would benefit from communicating their working practices and talking frankly about their expectations.
