In-Time On-Place Learning — Creation, Annotation and Sharing of Location-Base...Teemu Leinonen
Presentation in the 10th International Conference on Mobile Learning 2014, 28 February – 2 March, Madrid, Spain. The aim of the research is to look at how mobile video recording devices could support learning related to physical practices or places and situations at work. The paper discusses particular kind of workplace learning, namely learning using short video clips that are related to physical environment and tasks preformed in situ. The paper presents challenges of supporting learning as part of work practices taking place in the workplace, because learning has different attributes during work than in formal educational contexts: e.g. it is informal, just in time and social. The theoretical framework of the design is the tradition of pragmatism. We start with the concepts of experience, change of practices / habits and reflection, claiming that living through experiences suggest changes for practices and these trigger reflective processing of the situations. We present an Android application ‘Ach So!’ for creating and annotating short videos as potential solution for informal learning for physical work practices. The paper ends in proposing future steps in the development of the application. The co-design process for the application is lean and iterative, where the design receives feedback from the project partners, skilled workers, apprentices and managers of SMEs targeted to be the main users of the application.
This is the COSC 426 Lecture 4 on Designing AR Interfaces. Taught by Mark Billinghurst from the HIT Lab NZ at the University of Canterbury. This is part of his graduate course on Augmented Reality. Taught on August 2nd 2013

"Let's Marathon!" Why to motivate the re-use of audiovisual archives? Mariana Salgado
This presentation took place in NECS (European Network of Cinema and Media Studies) in Lodz, Poland (June, 2015). This is a summary of a full paper (forthcoming). It presents the argument that archivists and media scholars need to take on new practices, such as organizing hackathons or marathons, to facilitate the creative re-use of archival material. With these practices they could support the outreach of local communities and understand the nuances of reusing archival content to contextualize their records. In order to sustain this claim, I present one case study in which a group of international writers and video makers join forces to re-use audiovisual archive material in Helsinki, Finland. I unfold the limitations and opportunities that a one-day event presented to artists, archivists and media scholars, while collaborating and creatively re-using audiovisual archival material. The discussion uncovers issues pertaining to the facilitation of creative re-use as means for integration, the multicultural representation of the archives, the development of media literacy in collaborative processes and the challenges in the practice of legally reusing archival material.

In this paper we seek to disentangle the reasons that limit collaborations between museums and universities. Our standpoint is that collaboration is desired by both organizations as it could lead to richer outcomes in the design and research of new technologies in museums. However, little attention is paid to how this kind of collaboration actually happens and how it could be enhanced. This is why our focus is on teamwork, especially in the particularities of the collaboration of external design-researchers and museum professionals. This paper examines the collaboration between a university and a museum, in a situation in which these institutions collaborate in the production of interactive artefacts for exhibition space. As in other cases, collaboration between museums and other institutions is not always easy: participants of collaborations have expectations and needs that are far from obvious to everyone. In this paper, we present a case study on a course on Public Space and Social Inclusion, organized by the Museum of Science in Trento (Italy) and the EIT ICT Labs Doctoral School. During the course, the participants developed a set of original ideas to explore possible ways for the museum to become a cultural hub, and to look into the role it can play for community building. This case study gave us the opportunity to delve deep into the dynamics of the interactions between museum and university partners involved in a collaborative process. We conducted and analysed interviews with university representatives and museum staff to discover how they experienced the collaboration and what they were expecting from it. Analysing these interviews, we observed the need to follow three principal elements for a successful collaboration. Partners have to start together a collaboration planning in advance their intention and moments for exchanging mutual feedback and systematically review the project. Partners should plan their collaboration in advance, explicating their expectations for the project and setting dates for exchanging mutual feedback to review the project systematically. Time management is crucial. It is important to make clear which deadlines are fixed and which flexible, when it is time for deep reflection and when there’s a need for hurried action. In general, the participants would benefit from communicating their working practices and talking frankly about their expectations.
